Sony Talks PS4's Power And Microsoft's DRM "Take Back"

Sony's PlayStation 4 is a hot item right now, and there are multiple reasons for that.

SCE VP and managing director Fergal Gara addressed several of those reasons in recently speaking to TechRadar.

He says he's most proud of the fact that the PS4's design principles were "focused around the gamer first." That's why they have a platform that everyone, including developers, really seems to appreciate. It also helps that the price, coupled with the raw power, is very attractive. Gara says Sony believes they're bringing "the most powerful gaming device ever conceived" to market, and with a price tag of only $399, that's pretty impressive.

But what we like most about the interview is Gara's reaction to Microsoft's backtracking concerning used game DRM and the daily check-ins:

"Look, here's a phrase for you that someone I worked for once gave me which is, 'if you do things first you do it for your customer, if you do it second you do it for yourself'. What I'm most pleased with is that we've had an agenda for a long time now and all we've done is stick to our agenda. So it is tremendously rewarding that your agenda appeals to the people we most want to appeal to and that we don't have to change, we just keep focused, we keep going the way we were going for many many months and years now, certainly as we've clarified details we've changed not a thing."

That's precisely why so many haven't forgiven Microsoft. The bottom line is that they tipped their hand when the Xbox One was originally announced, and gamers aren't about to forget what they heard and saw. MS can reverse the policy all they want; the skepticism they created won't go away that easily, as they're starting to find out.
