Nearby lightning may be linked to migraines

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Weather has long been considered one of many potential migraine triggers, but a new study links lightning, specifically, to the onset of the severe headaches that plague more than 28 million Americans.

Based on headache logs and weather data for Ohio and Missouri, researchers found that people were 28 percent more likely to experience a migraine on days when lightning struck within 25 miles of their home.

"We're very surprised and very happy with the results in that this is the first study to link lightning to migraines," said Dr. Vincent Martin, the study's senior author from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in Ohio.

Migraines are severe headaches - sometimes accompanied by light sensitivity, visual hallucinations or nausea - that can disable a person for hours or even days at a time. The majority of migraine sufferers are women.

Martin told Reuters Health that a migraine may result from a person experiencing certain "triggers," such as stress, lack of sleep and dehydration.

Previous research has also found links between the onset of migraines and high barometric pressure, high temperatures and high humidity.

Most of the past studies looking at weather and migraines, however, relied on an individual's observations and did not always account for other, possibly unseen, local weather conditions, the researchers write in the journal Cephalalgia.

For the new study, they used information collected from three sensors that track lightning near Cincinnati, Ohio, and five sensors near St. Louis, Missouri. Those sensors allowed the researchers to know where and when lightning struck and the intensity of each strike.

They also used the headache diaries from two previous studies of 90 migraine sufferers in those areas who were between 18 and 65 years old. In those diaries, the participants recorded their headaches for three to six months.

After comparing the weather data with the headache journals, the researchers found that a lightning strike within 25 miles of a person's house was linked to a 31 percent increased risk of any kind of headache, and a 28 percent increased risk of the more severe migraine headache.

Martin said that could mean an extra one to three migraines per month for an individual, but he added that it depends on the person and the weather.

As for how lightning might affect migraine occurrences, Martin said it could be that the electromagnetic waves and ozone created by the lightning have something to do with it.

"The other theory is that when these thunderstorms roll in they can create more allergy spores in the environment," he said, which could create a problem for some people.

But the researchers cannot say for certain that lightning causes migraines, even though they used a computer model to account for other meteorological changes that occur during a thunderstorm.

In an accompanying editorial, Dr. Hayrunnisa Bolay of Gazi University in Ankara, Turkey, cautioned that the study had limitations, including its failure to account for the participants' own individual risk factors.

"In brief, one can only conclude that weather conditions associated with lightning have the potential to induce headache in migraine patients," she wrote.

California today is announcing its intent to declare bisphenol A a reproductive hazard.

Under a state law known as Prop. 65, warning signs would be required for consumer items that contain a certain high level of BPA. BPA is used to make polycarbonate plastic, and also is found in liners of food and beverage cans and some thermal receipts.

Scientists say BPA is an estrogen-like substance that can alter reproductive hormones. California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment said it based its decision to list BPA as a Prop. 65 chemical on a 2008 report by the National Toxicology Program.

?"Bisphenol A meets the criteria for listing as known to the State to cause reproductive toxicity (developmental endpoint) under Proposition 65, based on findings of NTP [the National Toxicology Program]," according to the state agency.

"OEHHA is relying on the NTP?s conclusion in the report that there is clear evidence of adverse developmental effects in laboratory animals at 'high' levels of exposure," according to the state's decision.

The decision was based on laboratory tests by scientists that have shown effects on the body weight and reproductive development of the pups of pregnant rats and mice exposed to high levels of BPA.

The state agency is proposing to set an acceptable level of exposure that is considered fairly high, 290 micrograms per day. As a result, Sarah Janssen of the Natural Resources Defense Council wrote on her blog that the decision ?is not likely to trigger any warning labels on canned food or beverages.? The same is probably true for receipts and most other consumer products.

"However," she added, "a listing alone is quite significant and makes official what parents have known for years ? BPA is harmful and should be avoided."

Plastics and chemical manufacturers say the compound, which has been used in polycarbonate plastic for 50 years, is safe at levels people are exposed to

The intent of the law, passed by voters in 1986, is to require manufacturers to warn consumers whenever a chemical is used that has been linked to cancer or reproductive effects. In some cases, companies decide to avoid using the compound rather than put up warning signs in stores or other public places.

BPA already has been banned from baby bottles, and removed from most hard-shell water bottles. It also has been replaced with another chemical in most thermal receipts, although that chemical, known as BPS, also has been linked to estrogen-like effects.

The state agency will accept public comments for one month before making a final decision listing BPA.

LONDON ? London?s legendary blue plaques -- historical markers commemorating the lives of eminent figures -- face an uncertain future because of austerity cuts at England?s official heritage agency.

More than 850 ceramic signs honor key people who lived in the U.K. capital, and their contribution to human history.

But the program?-- almost 150 years old and believed to be the first of its kind in the world -- now faces a ?very uncertain future,? according its lead administrator at English Heritage.

?These are extremely difficult times for English Heritage and for the scheme,? wrote Emily Cole in a letter made public earlier this month.

Existing plaques will remain, but no new locations are planned and the panel of historians and experts that considers nominations for future signs has been suspended.

The news has been greeted with dismay in London.

?Blue plaques are one of the most charming ways a capital has ever found to preserve historical memory,? cultural commentator Jonathan Jones wrote in The Guardian newspaper. ?They eschew the pomposity of statues.?

David Tucker, who leads thousands of tourists on guided walks of London every year, told NBC News: ?The plaques are part of the fabric of the city and it?s such a shame.

?As an American living here for 30 years, I can say that I still find myself coming across plaques I have never seen before and learning new things.?

The earliest surviving plaque, erected in 1867, marks the building in King Street where French emperor Napoloeon III once lived. (The first, erected the same year to commemorate the birthplace of Lord Byron, was lost when that building was demolished in 1889.)

In total, the city is dotted with 869 circular, domed signs. Among those honored are Americans with London connections including Jimi Hendrix -- who lived on Brook Street while recording 'Electric Ladyland' -- author Mark Twain, inventor Samuel Morse and broadcast journalist Edward Murrow.

Similar historical markers now exist elsewhere in England in many other cities around the world, including in the United States through bodies such as the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission.

?Over the next eighteen months, we will work?up the details of a new and more cost-effective approach to its administration,? said Ellen Harrison, a spokeswoman for the English Heritage, adding that it would need to ?become more cost effective and more self-sustaining.?

Each sign costs $1,500 to manufacture and a further, variable, sum to install, while the overall program?costs $400,000 a year to operate.

English Heritage last year generated around $86 million from membership subscriptions and admission fees at its historic sites. But it is still heavily reliant on public cash, and faces a 34 percent cut in its grant from Department for Culture, Media and Sport, from $218 million in 2010 to $147 million in 2014, as the U.K. government struggles to reduce a huge budget deficit.

One plaque marks the site of the studio used by sculptor Sir William Reid Dick, who wrote that buildings are ?more than just bricks and mortar?they are the theaters in which our lives are enacted.?

Hagfish gulped up in first video of deep-sea seal hunt

We no longer have to imagine elephant seals feasting in the deep sea. An underwater camera has filmed one slurping up a hagfish, the first sighting of seal predation on the sea floor.

The event was captured by a Neptune Canada live video stream in the north-east Pacific Ocean and spotted by a teenager who was watching the feed. Marine mammal experts later identified the moustached face in the corner of the frame as an elephant seal, one of the few seal species that spends most of its time underwater. In this case, it was observed at a depth of 894 metres, but the animals can descend more than 1500 metres below the surface, holding their breath for longer than 100 minutes.

The sighting shows the value of citizen science:?Steven Mih?ly from Ocean Networks Canada, based in Victoria, British Columbia, says that although data-mining techniques could be used to sift through the reams of underwater video, human observers are still most effective at picking out events of interest.

Nigeria says raised food production by 8 mln T in 2012

GENEVA (Reuters) - Nigeria is beating its target to raise food production, lifting output by 8 million tonnes last year, in efforts to diversify Africa's second-largest economy away from a reliance on oil, the agriculture minister said.

President Goodluck Jonathan laid out ambitious targets to raise food production such as rice and cocoa by 20 million tonnes within four years after his 2011 election victory.

This would represent an increase of around 15 percent by 2015, based on the latest United Nations data.

In 2012, the first full year since the pledge, the West African country produced an additional 8.1 million tonnes compared with a 5 million tonne target, Akinwumi Adesina said.

"Nigeria has no business importing food. We should be a global power house on food," he said at a round-table discussion on agriculture in Geneva this week, ahead of meetings with investors at the Davos conference.

Africa's most populous nation was a major exporter of palm oil and cocoa in the 1960s but production has slumped as the country has instead shifted its economy towards the oil sector, which accounts for 80 percent of government revenues.

Since an oil boom in the 1970s, a series of administrations have promised to support the agricultural sector to boost employment and alleviate poverty but policy has been inconsistent and lacked commitment.

Poor infrastructure, corruption and mismanagement mean most farming remains at a subsistence level. Nigeria spends around $11 billion on food imports annually, Adesina said.

Nigeria, the world's second largest rice importer according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is on track to end imports of rice and double cocoa production to 500,000 tonnes by 2015, Adesina added, but gave no specific update on the progress of meeting these targets, which were first set in mid-2011.

"We have launched an aggressive rice production programme to make us self-sufficient in rice and we put in place incentives for private sector to produce rice locally and it's working," he told Reuters on the sidelines of the meeting.

He said Nigeria had built 14 new rice mills in 2012 with a capacity to produce 250,000 tonnes.

Adesina said private sector investment in agriculture was $8 billion in 2012, without citing a figure for 2011.

Let me preface the following by saying that a company has every right to litigate against another that infringes upon their intellectual property.?I do believe that there are legitimate cases to be made for infringement, but I also believe that the process in which overly broad patents are awarded is broken to the point that its harmful to innovation and a competitive and open playing field for businesses today.?Patent trolls continue to abuse the system and are a significant problem that has yet to be addressed fully.

But what really gets my goat:

Is selective patent enforcement. I believe that if anyone infringes on your licensed intellectual property and you bring suit, then you should not be only able to selectively enforce the patents against a select group. Meaning, if two companies are infringing on your technology you should have to sue both of them, not just the one you want to punish. ?Also, if let?s say Company A has a technology that they license to Company C, and it infringes on say Company B?s technology ?then Company A should be on the hook for legal costs associated with any suit. This tends to not be the case in many instances, especially in manufacturing where contacts will have liability limit clauses.

If it sounds convoluted and confusing, it kind of is. Legal fees for a basic defense can rack up quickly into the multi-millions, and in many cases the only group who comes out on top financially is the attorneys who get to reap hundreds of hours of fees as well as payments to legal experts who testify.? The perceived tendency is for both parties to reach agreement without going to trial, as it saves considerably on costs, but there are always those cases where one company will refuse to settle regardless of benefit, and are using the legal system to put a company out of business or punish them. The simple ?story revolves around 3 patents all stemming from Recovery Point Manager which is an EMC product that both of the primarily founders of Zerto worked on while at EMC. I think the key factor here is that EMC bought Kashya (where the Zerto Founders came to EMC) and in turn own certain technologies that EMC is stating that Zerto is infringing upon.

To me, a case like this should be pretty straight forward and will hinge on independent code review to see if the technology indeed infringes.? Still, I can?t help but think that Zerto?isn?t?cutting too much into EMC?s bottom line (I?d think more VMware and their SRM product), but given the history of the relationships between the parties involved, this may just be ?personal?.

I?d hazard a guess that the vast majority of people who read this had no idea that the two companies were engaged in legal processes, and I have not seen much if anything in the trade press regarding this suit. It was only brought to my attention via discussion on twitter. Technology is a tough business, stuff like this makes it tougher. I?m interested to see where this goes because I know a lot of people like the Zerto product, and they have gained significant?momentum?with their Best of VMworld 2011 win.?I will simply have to wait and see what comes next.

Virtual Console

Virtual Console for Wii U: A spring system update will add Virtual Console software to the Nintendo eShop for Wii U. The service will launch right after the spring update and will include a selection of NES and Super NES games, with Game Boy Advance games to be added in the future. The prices for NES and Super NES Virtual Console games for Wii U will be the same as they were for the Virtual Console on Wii. People who have already purchased the Wii version of a certain NES or Super NES Virtual Console game and transferred it to their Wii U console can buy the enhanced Wii U version of the same game for the reduced price of $1 for NES games and $1.50 for Super NES games.
Classic Games for 30 Cents! To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of the Famicom in Japan (which was known as the NES in the United States), Nintendo is making one NES or Super NES game available each month now through July at the anniversary price of just 30 cents. Each game will be available at that price for 30 days, and the first is the NES game Balloon Fight, which is now available in the Nintendo eShop for Wii U.
Social and System Enhancements

Miiverse Expands to Smartphones: Starting this spring, people will be able to browse Miiverse from their smartphones. Initially the experience will be browser-based, but Nintendo plans to create a dedicated Miiverse app in the future.
System Updates: Two major updates are on the way, one in the spring and one in the summer. The updates will introduce a wide range of functionality, such as Virtual Console capabilities and shortening the time it takes users to launch software or return to the menu screen.

Sweet preferences: do you have a sweet tooth? ? Sunwarrior News ...

Our desire for sweet food spans back throughout our evolution; sweetness would have helped our ancestors identify foods with more energy and essential nutrients. What was once advantageous is now a driving force behind our obesity epidemic and the rise of chronic diseases. Do you have a sweet tooth that you just can?t satisfy? This article will give you some of the science behind food preferences, with a focus on sweets.

Sweet taste receptors are located in both our mouths and intestines. When they are stimulated, a cascade occurs in our brain; pleasure is ultimately derived. Furthermore, the brain circuitry from sweets has some overlap with the response from addictive drugs such as opiates. Sweets also have pain-reducing properties; this can be easily seen in babies, where a sweet drink will reduce their response to painful stimuli. Sweeter foods can help alleviate PMS and stress, which is why they can be labelled as ?comfort? foods. Sweet preferences are associated with the sensitivity to their mood changing effects.

Many factors influence the development of food preference in kids, starting with the mother?s diet while in utero or breast feeding. The ability to detect levels of sweetness is present in newborns; babies will notably consume more liquid if it?s sweetened. When distressed, the face of a baby will relax (and often smile) while consuming a sweeter beverage. When a stranger feeds a baby something sweet, the baby will not only be calmed but also show a preference for that individual in the future; a secret way to win a baby?s affection. Behavioral controls with sweet tastes are clear even in early life.

Babies and young children base many of their choices of food off of sweetness and familiarity. Furthermore, early exposure to sweetened foods leads to an increased preference later in life. Development of food preference depends on past experience, energy density, taste, and social environments during our upbringings.? Current estimates in the USA suggest that added sugar accounts for 15.9% of the caloric intake in children 2?5 years of age, and 18.6% for those aged 6?11. Most of this sugar is found in drinks, predominantly in flavored milk and pop. Our bodies have evolved to prefer, once rare, sweet and energy dense foods; this is intensified during childhood, maybe due to the higher energy needs during periods of growth (although the mechanisms are still widely unknown).

In adults, sweet preferences show a lot of variation; genetics may play a role in terms of taste receptors in our mouths and their sensitivity to levels of sweetness. Many of the attitudes we have toward food predominantly comes from our childhoods, this makes it especially important for us to not reward kids with food. Regardless of the large variation, hedonic (eating for pleasure) responses are universal. Obese individuals have a greater hedonic drive along with a decreased perceived sweetness; preference increases with increased sweetness as BMI increases.??

Low-calorie sweeteners are often used to replace sugar, however concerns over the effect on appetite, taste response, and other factors has arisen. Furthermore, what are the long-term consequences of low-calorie sweetener consumption, especially when introduced during infancy? The role of sweeteners on food preference is an important research area; a better understanding of its consequences is needed.

It?s clear that our sweet preferences largely comes from our childhoods, but that doesn?t mean all hope is lost if you have a sweet tooth. Try to eliminate refined sugars from your diet for a span; you?ll notice in just a few days that your cravings will subside. Focus on eating more vegetables and protein (Sunwarrior protein is great), the fiber and protein will help boost satiety, making it easier to say no to dessert items. Still drinking pop? Stop! The amount of sugar in one bottle is outrageous. If you want something fizzy, try carbonated water with lemon juice; this is a great alternative while trying to kick bad habits. The health effects of a high sugar diet are enormous, so remember that you?re worth it when you?re struggling with kicking a sweet tooth.

Sugar consumption has risen dramatically, especially in our youth; at the same time diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and obesity have also shot up. More and more evidence is linking our higher sugar diets with the rise of these chronic diseases. We have an especially hard time today with the increased availability of energy-dense sweet foods; our bodies have evolved to desire these food items. About 35% of Americans fall into a pre-diabetic range, while 12% have diabetes; the occurrence of obesity has risen to 35% of American citizens! Furthermore, people with diabetes are at a fourfold greater risk for heart disease. Don`t wait to kick your sweet tooth; there is no time like the present to start showing your body the love (in the form of a good diet) it deserves.

Glaxo Enters The Small Business 'Hall Of Shame' // Pharmalot

Cost cutting is an age-old practice and the pharmaceutical industry has certainly sharpened its skills in recent years. Now, though, a move by GlaxoSmithKline to increase the time by which payments are made to some of its suppliers has earned the drugmaker the distinction of being named to the ?Hall of Shame? by the Forum for Private Business, a group that represents small businesses in the UK.

According to the organization, Glaxo (GSK) recently decided to take up to 95 days to pay suppliers instead of 60 days, a move that the Forum has called ?bully boy behavior,? and declared this amounts to ?poor payment? practices. The group also noted the drugmaker two years ago had increased payment time to 60 days.

?When suppliers receive a letter like the one GSK?s suppliers are starting to receive, few have any choice but to agree to the new payment terms. There is little room for bargaining through fear they will lose the business, and no small firm wants that in the current economic climate,? the Forum says in a statement on its web site. ?What makes the GSK case all the worse is the sheer size and profitability of the firm ? the fourth biggest pharmaceutical company on the planet. This is not a business struggling to make its way in the world.

?It is, however, a company concerned only with boosting its own profits whatever the cost to smaller firms, and has scant regard for the consequences of its actions. Most people will see this as the worst type of corporate greed imaginable. GSK can?t even argue they?ve not got past form. Only two years ago they increased supplier payment terms to 60 days, and now this. They are relentless.

?Of course, the problem is that when lesser companies see the example being set by the likes of GSK, and other household names? then they think it?s OK to do the same. It?s not, it never will be, and it?s high time big business started treating the army of small businesses who supply them with some respect. Prompt payment is not too much to ask, but can make all the difference for struggling small firms.?

Like it or not, this is often the way of the world and is nothing new. In many industries, this is simply called ?banking with the trade,? a reference to holding back from making payments as long as possible in order to have use of the money yourself. But drugmakers are not often singled out so publicly for such decisions and raises the prospect that the pharmaceutical industry may encounter more vocal run ins with some suppliers. In any event, we asked Glaxo for comment and will update you accordingly.

[UPDATE: A Glaxo spokeswoman writes us to say that, "yes, we have reduced the number of payment runs we make to once a month, at the beginning of each month, 60 days after we have received an invoice. Our previous process was to pay invoices 60 days from whenever they were received. These changes will make payment terms with suppliers consistent across the group, will reduce complexity and provide more certainty to suppliers as to when they will be We greatly value the relationships with have with our many suppliers and understand the pressures on cashflow and financing being faced by smaller companies at this time.

"This is why, for smaller companies, we have a number of schemes in place to help them, including alternative payment schedules and offering supply chain finance. For most suppliers, the changes we have made to our payment terms will have little to no impact if they submit their invoices towards the end of the month.]

That's Grace! | Teach With Joy

There are some days when I wonder how I am going to get through homeschooling my children. Titus and Tiana woke up with bad coughs (a cough that has lingered for several days). Titus threw up phlegm. My two older boys rolled out of bed in slow motion and walked about in slow motion.

I was waiting for them to finish their breakfast so we could get the day started, but they were all lingering around in their pajamas. I knew I would have to play the role of motivating mom. Honestly, I don?t like having to do this. It?s tiring.

I love it when they wake up, perky and alive, excited to learn. Well, the reality is, homeschooling goes through its ups and downs. Children get sick, moms get sick (and pregnant!), attitudes get in the way, spiritual issues have to be dealt with, and the kids need constant training, instruction, and discipline.?In fact, homeschooling often feels like it is a character education not just for my kids, but for me.? The obstacles and hurdles make me dig down deep and remember that I?m doing this in faith, not always knowing what?s going to happen next but confident that my equipper and sustainer is the Lord.

Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. (James 1:2-3 NASB)

Endurance does bear fruit, and I hope in the fruit of all this labor ? the days when the eyes of my children twinkle because they have overcome a task they thought they couldn?t do, when they progress through their material like bullet trains, when they make new discoveries and bubble over with creative inspirations, when they have insights about their relationship with God, or when they tell me, ?I really like being with you, mom. Thanks for teaching me.? These moments do come and when they do, I?m re-charged and ready to go again.

I?ve had to come to terms with the reality that homeschooling is my cross to bear in this season of my life. It?s not the load that I mind so much but the self-denial it requires. Jesus says, ?Pick up your cross daily, deny yourself and follow me.? It takes a whole lot of self-denial to homeschool. I have to deny the temptation to control my kids or to compare them with one another and with others. I have to deny my pride and tendency to take credit for their successes. I have to deny the doubts that plague me when I feel like, ?Oh gosh, are they learning anything?? I have to deny my own comfort and liberties when I would rather do something else besides sit through a morning of teaching my children. I have to deny opportunities to serve myself and pursue my wants because homeschooling is the all-consuming lifestage that I am in, and I really don?t have time to do much else.? I have to deny my own laziness when I want to lie down in bed and sleep because this pregnancy is tiring me out!

Just recently, I was having a conversation with playgroup moms about homeschooling. At one point, we were all talking about the difficulties we have to deal with. They said something like, ?You are just blessed because your children are smart. It?s easy to teach them.?? This comment hit me on two levels ? carnal and spiritual. Let me talk about the carnal first. I was a little bit hurt. It?s the same way I feel when people think my pregnancy is ?easy? because I am not puking all the time. Sure, Joy is pregnant, but it?s nothing for her. It?s her fifth child. No biggie, she?s been there and done that before. She just pops them out.?Well, I may not puke and my kids may not appear to be ?struggling? learners, but homeschooling in our house is not always a postcard.

Good gracious! My kids have days when they act plain dumb. I mean, just this morning, Titus looked at the word ?PET? and couldn?t read it. Really?! After finishing the entire Hooked on Phonics Kindergarten level so that he was proficiently reading four to five letter words and a bunch of sight words, and then he looks at me and says, ?I don?t know that word?!? Was this a cruel joke? Did his cough give him a foggy brain? Did too much of the IPad over the weekend slow his down his capacity to think?

My response was, ?Okay, hon, we won?t homeschool today. You are not well and you should rest. But this also means that you won?t do Reading Eggs on the computer either. Your brain needs to take a break.? (Reading Eggs is a great phonics program which he was only entitled to access after he learning to read.) I meant well but he busted out into tears and then vomited out his phlegm because he kept crying. Lovely morning, eh? (You can refer to paragraph 1 about the vomit). I explained to him afterwards that I really wanted him to take it easy and get well. He was fine and spent some time playing with insect stickers instead.

Let me go on?Friday morning, Edan said, ?I don?t want to do any work today.?

?Oh really? And what would you like to do?? I wanted to explore this.

?Nothing.?

Very calmly I replied, ?Okay, you can do nothing. That?s fine with me. But this means you will stay home and do nothing while your brothers and sister go to playgroup and you will also do nothing when they watch a movie with their cousins tonight and have lots of fun. You can sit here and do nothing.?

?I will do my work,? was his quick conclusion. And he did. Whew.

So, just to be clear, my kids are very normal.

On a spiritual level, the comment my playgroup friends made about my kids being EASY to teach humbled me. After all, Who am I? Who am I to have the circumstances that I do, the resources available to me, the husband, and the children that bring me so much joy? Yes, I think my kids are special, not because they are genetically superior but because they are God?s gifts to me. I don?t deserve them or any of his blessings. It is grace. God?s grace. If anyone should look upon my children and affirm their abilities or talents, the credit does not go to me, Edric, our kids, or even to homeschooling. ?Everything is by God?s grace alone.

The homeschooling experience doesn?t always come in a pretty package. Open this and your parenting will be successful! Open this and you will have brilliant children!?If anyone feeds you advertisement like that about homeschooling, turn around and run away! It?s not true. Days like this are a very healthy reminder that homeschooling is an invitation to experience God?s grace more than it is an antidote to family and children issues.

The longer I homeschool, the more cognisant I am that it is not a cure-all solution. When it is esteemed as such, well that?s what you call idolatry. Much of the worrying and fretting, the panicking and impatience enters into my homeschooling when I want to manage all the outcomes and dictate the pace of my children?s learning or their maturity. On some days, God allows this to happen, but most of the time he shows me that I control nothing but my own responses and reactions to what he is doing in my life and the lives of my kids. This doesn?t mean that I don?t have goals, prepare lessons, or have a schedule for my kids. I believe in doing my part. But the results are always a testament, not to my ability to teach or train my children or the magic of the homeschooling experience, but to the grace of God.

Grace comes with contentment ? contentment in my weaknesses. It was wonderfully coincidental that the first lesson the boys and I had together this morning was on the character of CONTENTMENT. I?m using a book by Ruth Younts called, Get Wisdom. She defines contentment as being satisfied because God is working everything together for my good and for his glory. The verse she gave as a reference was Philippians 4:11, I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.

This is exactly what I needed to deal with this morning?s slow start and my grumpy, sickly, not-all-there children. Contentment is accepting my children?s progress, the challenges, their not-so-shining moments, the waiting and hoping in the meantime, their uniqueness and limitations (as well as my own), and being able to truthfully say, ?Lord, I thank you for causing all things to work together for the good of my children and myself that you might get the glory.? Only then comes the beautiful satisfaction in his grace. Only then does it look EASY.

Amazingly, we finished homeschooling by 11:30 am today with my children smiling at the end. How that happened is a wonder. But like I said, that?s grace!

Kantar: Apple's smartphone OS still the top selling in US for last quarter of 2012

Kantar's numbers for the final quarter of last year are in, and things are still looking peachy for Apple in the US smartphone market. According to the research firm, Cupertino scored 51.2-percent of smartphone sales in the states for the quarter, which drew to a close two days before Christmas. The second and third place entrants are the same as well, with Android at 44.4-percent and Microsoft's mobile version of Windows at 2.6-percent sales. On the carrier side, AT&T scored exactly a third of smartphone sales, with Verizon close before at 32-percent, according to to Kantar's numbers. "Body of Proof"

<strong>"Body of Proof," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Body of Proof" has been falling below its timeslot competitor, CBS's "Unforgettable," but it still draws a decent audience and its fans are very vocal. ABC has decided it deserves a third season.

"Castle"

<strong>"Castle," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show's ratings have definitely suffered without "Dancing With the Stars" airing beforehand, but it is a consistent performer. And now that Castle and Beckett's relationship is evolving, a fifth season of "oh yes they will" is a no-brainer.

"Charlie's Angels"

<strong>"Charlie's Angels," ABC</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Not really a shock for anybody, but "Charlie's Angels" is cooked. Flimsy story, bad remake, questionable casting.

"Cougar Town"

"Dancing With the Stars"

"Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23"

<strong>"Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> ABC's new bleep-worthy comedy starring Krysten Ritter, Dreama Walker and James Van Der Beek is a funny one, and definitely embraces the quirk (Beek Jeans!), so we're excited to see what they do with a second season.

"Desperate Housewives"

<strong>"Desperate Housewives," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> After countless deaths, murders, betrayals and natural disasters on Wisteria Lane over the show's eight seasons, the ladies of "Desperate Housewives" will say goodbye forever this May.

"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition"

<strong>"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> After a whopping nine seasons, the do-gooding show came to an end in January. But worry not, it will continue to have a few specials to make viewers cry tears of joy.

"GCB"

<strong>"GCB," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This "Desperate Housewives"-esque dramedy premiered to less than 8 million viewers, and the phenomenal cast (Kristin Chenoweth, Annie Potts, Leslie Bibb) couldn't bring in a Texas-sized audience, so ABC canceled it.

"Grey's Anatomy"

<strong>"Grey's Anatomy," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Shonda Rhimes' medical drama is a ratings juggernaut, even in its eighth season, and with most of her <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/10/greys-anatomy-ellen-pompeo_n_1506113.html?ref=tv" target="_hplink">big stars signed on for more</a>, ABC gave the go-ahead for a ninth season.

"Happy Endings"

<strong>"Happy Endings," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show is way too "ca-yute" to bubble it, and obviously someone high up at ABC agrees. After its first season was moved around and aired all out of order, the network still gave it another chance to find its audience in Season 2 ... and it has, and hopefully will continue to in Season 3.

"Last Man Standing"

<strong>"Last Man Standing," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Ratings for Tim Allen's return to sitcoms have been very strong, making it Tuesday's most-watched comedy. If you can beat "Glee" and "The Biggest Loser," a second season is a given.

"Man Up!"

<strong>"Man Up!," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> ABC pulled the show after eight episodes.

"The Middle"

<strong>"The Middle," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Now in its third season, "The Middle" is still holding onto its middle position in the ratings on Wednesday nights, and that seems just about right. It doesn't do "American Idol" or "Survivor" numbers, of course, but with over 7 million viewers, it's a strong comedy for the network that easily beats anything NBC is offering.

"Missing"

<strong>"Missing," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Ashley Judd lead this drama about a former CIA agent whose son goes missing, kicking her back into action to find him. The series was only set to air 10 episodes, miniseries-style, with the potential for more, but a cancellation means that's all they're getting.

"Modern Family"

<strong>"Modern Family," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Modern Family" remains ABC's biggest sitcom success story of the last decade, both in ratings and awards love. This critical darling is getting a fourth season of hijinks with the hilarious Pritchett-Dunphy clan.

"Once Upon A Time"

<strong>"Once Upon A Time," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Once Upon a Time" has gotten praise for being one of the more family-friendly dramas on TV, and it's been pulling in close to 10 million viewers each week because of it. We're excited by the almost endless possibilities for new fairy tale-inspired stories to tackle in Season 2.

"Pan Am"

<strong>"Pan Am," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Poor "Pan Am" just never quite took off. The series' vintage look actually worked against it, much like NBC's swiftly canceled "Playboy Club" -- guess when you're being compared to award-winning shows like "Mad Men," it makes it more than a little tough to live up to the hype.

"Private Practice"

<strong>"Private Practice," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Private Practice" has never gotten "Grey's Anatomy"-level ratings, and things got shakier when ABC bumped it to Tuesday nights to make room for creator Shonda Rhimes' <em>other</em> new show, "Scandal," but they've given the show a sixth season order.

"Revenge"

<strong>"Revenge," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> With a clever mix of drama, mystery and serious revenge-ing, this is hands down one of the most addictive new shows on TV, and we can't wait to see where they take things in Season 2.

"The River"

<strong>"The River," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The promise of "Paranormal Activity"-like scares each week quickly fizzled after this show premiered, along with the ratings. The first season's eight episodes came and went, and ABC has nixed any plans for more.

"Scandal"

<strong>"Scandal," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Shonda Rhimes' latest show isn't about doctors at all -- and that's why we're glad it's sticking around. Kerry Washington is amazing as Olivia Pope, a Washington, D.C. fixer with a crack team of specialists helping make bad headlines vanish before they're ever written. Here's hoping for more than seven episodes in its second season.

"Shark Tank"

<strong>"Shark Tank," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Now in its third season, this reality competition show is unlike any other on network TV and ABC is keeping it around for more for that very reason.

"Suburgatory"

<strong>"Suburgatory," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> It's smart, quick and not too cute -- "Suburgatory" is consistently named the sitcom you should be watching, but probably aren't. The great cast makes this one a no-brainer, and the ratings have stayed pretty consistent, too. We're thrilled it's getting a second season to shine!

"Work It"

"2 Broke Girls"

<strong>"2 Broke Girls," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>At first, people balked at the racist supporting characters, but now it seems that audiences are all over "2 Broke Girls" -- it's ratings have seen a steady increase, and it won the People's Choice Award for Favorite New Comedy.

"A Gifted Man"

<strong>"A Gifted Man," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>"A Gifted Man's" total viewer numbers were OK for a Friday night, but a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic is especially bad for CBS. Another bad sign: star Patrick Wilson tweeted about the end: "I had a great time. Thanks to my fans. So happy it's done." And done it is.

"The Amazing Race"

<strong>"The Amazing Race," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong>Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Voted the best reality show on TV several times (albeit years ago), "The Amazing Race" isn't going anywhere. Ratings have dropped a bit, but are still solid.

"The Big Bang Theory"

<strong>"The Big Bang Theory," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Nothing seems to be able to make a dent in this show. With fantastic ratings (it beat "Idol"!) and a rabid following, we'll be seeing plenty more "Big Bang" before its run is over.

"Blue Bloods"

<strong>"Blue Bloods," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The anchor of Friday nights on CBS, "Blue Bloods" has performed well, pulling in around 11 million viewers an episode. The show might not have the youngest audience, but it's still enough for CBS to keep it on the schedule.

"Criminal Minds"

<strong>"Criminal Minds," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Paget Brewster might be checking out, but "Criminal Minds" is here to stay. In Season 7, the procedural is still a consistently strong ratings performer for CBS.

"CSI"

<strong>"CSI," CBS</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Whenever the time comes, the "CSI" mothership will end with a lot of fanfare, but not this year. With new faces Ted Danson and Elisabeth Shue around, there is going to be at least one more season.<br />

"CSI: Miami"

<strong>"CSI: Miami," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Out of the three (!) "CSI" programs on the air, "CSI: Miami" is the one to say goodbye first. The one-time ratings giant has been affected by football overruns (just as "The Good Wife" has) and "CSI: NY" has the edge in terms of total viewers, meaning a "Miami" sunset was inevitable. <br />

"CSI: NY"

<strong>"CSI: NY," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Of the two "CSI" spinoffs, "CSI: NY" is the stronger -- pulling in more than 10 million viewers on a Friday night is no easy task -- and with "CSI: Miami" canceled, "CSI: NY's" renewal was a no-brainer.

"The Good Wife"

<strong>"The Good Wife," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This critical darling suffered after its move from Tuesdays to Sundays thanks to sports overruns. The viewers are frustrated, but given its strong cast and Emmy love, the show is still coming back for more.

"Hawaii Five-0"

<strong>"Hawaii Five-0," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Despite the scheduling setback as Alex O'Loughlin seeks treatment, Season 2 is still doing well for CBS in a very competitive timeslot.<br />

"How To Be a Gentleman"

<strong>"How To Be A Gentleman," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Not even having "The Big Bang Theory" as a lead-in could save this David Hornsby project, which only lasted three episodes.

"How I Met Your Mother"

<strong>"How I Met Your Mother," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> CBS renewed "How I Met Your Mother" for two more seasons in March 2011, so fans can look forward to being strung along about the titular mother's identity for a bit longer.<br />

"The Mentalist"

<strong>"The Mentalist," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Although the show hit a season ratings low in the middle of February, its fanbase and overall ratings were enough to have it return for another season.

"Mike & Molly"

<strong>"Mike & Molly," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Thanks to an Emmy win and Oscar nomination, Melissa McCarthy is a Hollywood power player and CBS is keen to keep her around. Just look at the multiple pilots she has in the works as a behind the scenes player! "Mike & Molly" will be back for a third season.

"NCIS"

<strong>"NCIS," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The long-running procedural has become a ratings juggernaut at a time when most shows start shedding viewers. Season 10 is now happening.

"NCIS: Los Angeles"

<strong>"NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong>Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show has gone up in the ratings over the last couple of years, and people can't get enough of L.L. Cool J and Chris O'Donnell.

"NYC 22"

<strong>"NYC 22," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This "Rookie Blue" clone from executive producer Robert DeNiro didn't really move the needle when it premiered midseason; CBS officially axed it with three episodes left to air.

"Person of Interest"

<strong>"Person of Interest," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> With ratings matching juggernauts like "Grey's Anatomy" and fans popping up everywhere, we'll be seeing another season of "Person of Interest."

"Rob"

<strong>"Rob," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Rob's" spot after ratings juggernaut "The Big Bang Theory" probably went a long way in helping it survive to see the end of its first season, but that's as far as it'll get.

"Rules of Engagement"

<strong>"Rules of Engagement," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show has moved around so much it's hard to remember when it's on, and with six seasons under its belt it's had quite a nice run. Despite slipping ratings and the aforementioned constant switcheroos, there's still a future for "Rules of Engagement."

"Survivor"

<strong>"Survivor," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong>Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Of <em>course</em> we have "Survivor" coming back for another season. Where else are we going to see petty squabbles and insane behavior on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world?

"Two and a Half Men"

<strong>"Two and a Half Men," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Despite a less-than-favorable critical response, the revamped "Two and a Half Men" keeps pulling in respectable numbers every week. Ashton Kutcher, Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones will all return for a Season 10.

"Undercover Boss"

<strong>"Undercover Boss," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The inherent addictiveness of this show has gone a long way in securing loyal viewers -- it has been on top of the ratings several times this season alone.
