Granada Hills Charter High's Academic Decathlon team meets with Washington leaders

Members of Granada Hills Charter High's national-champion Academic Decathlon Team pose in front of the U.S. Capitol during their visit to Washington, D.C.

Granada Hill Charter High School's nine-member Academic Decathlon team is in Washington, D.C., taking a victory lap of sorts as a reward for winning its second national championship earlier this year.

Team members met this week with Education Secretary Arne Duncan and also have meetings scheduled with Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, who represent California in the U.S. Senate.

Granada Hills dominated the national competition, held in late April in Albuquerque, scoring the highest point tally in the decathlon's history. That score - 54,081 points out of a possible 60,000 - broke the previous record of 53,119 set by Ventura County's Moorpark High School in 2008.

Sex Life of Diabetic Women May Suffer

FRIDAY, July 27 (HealthDay News) -- Sex is less satisfying for middle-aged and older women with diabetes than those without the disease, new research suggests.

The University of California, San Francisco, study of nearly 2,300 ethnically diverse women, aged 40 to 80, in California found that women with diabetes were just as interested and engaged in sexual activity as their healthy peers.

Women with diabetes, however, were much more likely to be less satisfied with sex. Low overall sexual satisfaction was 40 percent more likely to be reported by diabetic women who weren't taking insulin, and more than twice as likely to be reported by diabetic women taking insulin, compared with non-diabetic women.

The study also found that diabetic women receiving insulin treatment were more than twice as likely to have difficulty with lubrication and 80 percent more likely to have difficulty achieving orgasm.

The findings are published online in the August issue of the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology.

"Diabetes is a recognized risk factor for erectile dysfunction in men, but there have been almost no data to indicate whether it also affects sexual function in women," study senior author Dr. Alison Huang, assistant professor in the UCSF department of medicine, said in a university news release.

Diabetes and its treatments can affect women's sexual function, the researchers said. They said doctors should consider assessing diabetic women for sexual problems, particularly those who take insulin.

Overall, nearly 64 percent of the women in the study reported some sexual activity in the past three months.

Nearly 11 percent (about 12.6 million) of women aged 20 and older in the United States have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association.

The researchers didn't distinguish between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, but they assumed most had type 2, based on age of diagnosis.

Although the study found an association between diabetes and less sexual pleasure, it did not show a cause-and-effect relationship.

When There is Constructural Deterioration in your Fredericksburg ...

On June 1, 2012, the adage, "after the rain comes the rainbow" transpired in Fredericksburg when a bewitching arc came into view following heavy precipitation. The Fredericksburg Patch reproduced a photo of this bright rainbow. Indeed, the city is no stranger to precipitation and downpours. Dismally, these weather conditions sometimes cause architectural damage to homes, specifically to roofs and windows. To counter this, homeowners ought to commission restoration professionals who can make houses seem as good as new, offering fresh context to the conviction that a color spectrum often supersedes heavy precipitation.

The part of your dwelling most apt to receive the most deterioration in severe weather conditions is your roof. It's always inimitable to employ the services of a roofing builder to ensure quality roof repair. Do-it-yourself roof repair might put you in danger, but roofing firms have the knowledge and appropriate equipment to guarantee that roofing tasks comply with safety standards.

Roof shingles generally become loose or crinkly following a chain of considerable precipitation, so these must be regularly examined for deterioration. If the roof shingles aren't repaired or replaced at once, moisture will most likely creep into the walls and ceilings. Roof shingles likewise tend to arch or bulge when roofs aren't laid appropriately; these will require to be replaced.

There are a few kinds of roof shingles you can choose as replacement shingles. All offer benefits to insure your roof safeguards your home from damaging weather conditions. However, the degree of these pluses can differ, depending on which type you pick. Thus familiarize yourself with all these kinds so that you'd earn exactly what to ask your roofing constructor.

Asphalt shingles are possibly the most regulalrly employed as they're the most long-lasting and attractive. The roofing Fredericksburg homeowners opt for employ asphalt shingles as they're easy on the wallet, painless to set, and are low maintenance. Another long-lasting type of shingle is slate shingles, which have a great resistance to climatic vacillations and fire.

The windows to your dwelling don't simply present cosmetic functions; the insulation of your home generally depends on the window types, too. Because of its counteraction to rust and bugs, vinyl is a common material employed on windows. Intense heat and other rough atmospheric conditions, however, may compel vinyl to bend. When this transpires, you need an authority on windows Fredericksburg homeowners count on for restoration.

Be it your roof or your windows, have the general contractor Fredericksburg VA residents depend on evaluate your home after a cloudstorm to decide which features require concentration. This way, your dwelling can reattain structural soundness. For more knowledge, go to renewableenergyworld.com/rea/blog/post/2011/03/common-roofing-issues1.

International AIDS Conference Returns to U.S. with Much Remaining Undone

News | Health

So much changed in a 22-year span since the conference was last held in the U.S. that its return effectively marks a new phase in the epidemic in terms of treatment, prevention, funding and death rates

Late Sunday afternoon, less than a mile from the White House, the U.S. will witness something that it has not seen in 22 years: the opening of an International AIDS Conference.

The meeting, which this year is expected to draw about 25,000 scientists, activists and celebrities, has been held abroad for two decades because in 1987 the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a measure preventing anyone with known HIV infection from entering the country. At the time, the gathering?launched in 1985, four years after the first recognition of cases in the U.S.?alternated every year between U.S. and foreign locations. The 1990 conference in San Francisco, the first held after the rule was finalized, was gravely disrupted by thousands of delegates who stayed away?so much so that Harvard University, set to be the next U.S. host, announced it would withdraw its sponsorship unless the ban was lifted. It was not. The 1992 conference moved instead to Amsterdam, and the annual meeting stayed away until President Barack Obama lifted the travel ban in late 2009.

So much changed in that 22-year span that the conference?s return effectively marks a truly new phase in the epidemic. The latest report from UNAIDS, the United Nations agency that monitors the global epidemic, backs up the sense that things are changing. The report, released Wednesday, found that among the 34.2 million people living with HIV, fewer are dying: There were 1.7 million deaths last year worldwide, compared to 1.8 million the year before and a peak of 2.3 million in 2005. At the same time, the report said, new infections are declining too, by almost 20 percent in the past 10 years.

Simultaneously, after many years of disappointments, research is returning hopeful results for both prevention and treatment. Three years ago, scientists reported the first promising findings in the search for an HIV vaccine, considered the key to global eradication. Two years ago, researchers published the first partially successful trials of both a microbicide and a drug cocktail that may prevent infection. Last year, a nine-country trial demonstrated that getting infected people into treatment very quickly can keep them from passing the disease along. And since 2007, scientists have been closely watching the "progress of the ?Berlin patient"?the only person, out of 60 million believed to have been infected in more than 30 years, who appears to have been cured of HIV.

The situation now is so different from 1990?when AIDS was a fast-moving, terrifying and invariably fatal disease, as captured in the new documentary How To Survive A Plague?that two HIV researchers writing in this week?s New England Journal of Medicine daringly titled their editorial: "The Beginning of the End of AIDS?"

For anyone who remembers HIV's apocalyptic arrival?I?m one of them, and lost many friends in the early days?the current moment feels as major a shift as 1996, when multi-drug cocktails came to market and people visibly on the verge of death recovered in ways that seemed miraculous. A friend quipped then that it was the first time in 15 years he could take his florist off speed-dial.

And yet: Major challenges remain, and in many ways the perception of AIDS as a chronic disease may make them harder to tackle.

Do Well In Home Business With These Winning Ideas! | Internet ...

Sometimes life happens and you unexpectedly hit a rough patch. You may be looking for a job after being gainfully employed for many years and are unsure of how to get by. Now may be the time to consider starting your own home business. The piece that follows offers terrific tips for launching an entrepreneurial entity from your own home.

A product that can be used to fill a need, especially one that you might have in your life, is an excellent choice to offer in your home business. Customers want to buy products that solve common problems they face every day. Your product will be a success when you create solutions to common problems people face.

To make your customers feel special, give them personalized service. Try including an unexpected free gift with their orders, like a thank you card with purchases or anything else that shows them how much you value their business. Two things people love are free gifts and appreciation. Find ways to show your customers that you appreciate them.

Try to keep your personal appearance up at home the same as you would when working in an office environment. Your home business can give you a huge motivation boost, but if you neglect yourself in favor of your work, that can take its toll over time. Take a shower, get dressed and report to your home office in a professional manner. These tips will not only improve your self-image, but they will improve how others view you too!

Consider what you hope to achieve with your business, and write a comprehensive business plan. You can change this plan if you need to. However, your plan will serve as a guide map when you?re getting started, and will be a handy reminder of what you?d like to accomplish with your business. Frequently update the details of your plan as your business evolves.

If you can?t think of what you could possibly market from your home business, ponder items that would be useful in your own life. Try and determine the needs of your consumers before you select a product. If there is a certain product that could be used in your life, then it?s probable that others could also use it.

You must figure in cost, in order to know profit when you are selling items which you have made. A basic wholesale mark-up would be twice the price of your cost. Retail mark-up is twice that of the wholesale price. Set your prices at a level that is fair for you, as well as your customers.

You can find information and advice through online forums and communities specifically offering support for the home business owner. You can get tried and true advice totally free by joining any of the many home business forums. In these online meet-up spots, you will find understanding people to help you get out of a rut.

Stay away from wasting time and socializing on social media, and use your time wisely for marketing your business instead. Sites like Facebook and Twitter can be incredibly distracting, and it?s easy to lose hours there if you?re not careful. Get on Facebook only after you get off work.

Join a couple of discussion groups and forums that discuss the topic of home business. There is good information available on the internet, and a quick search will result in a number of good sites. Blogs are another great source of information.

Set aside a page on your site for banner links. You can trade links or graphics with other websites, which have content on the same topic as yours. Utilizing a banner page will increase your search engine rankings and help your audience find your site and products easily.

Take advantage of tax breaks when you entertain clients. Treating clients to dinner can be written off as a business expense. It is important that you keep all receipts when you entertain clients; if the IRS ever audits you, you will need to provide proof that these were legitimate expenses incurred when conducting business with clients.

As soon as your business is up and running, track mileage and gas on all the driving you do in relation to the business. Being a business owner means changes to your tax status. This allows eligibility for deducting mileage and gas associated with your work. If your business involves lots of door-to-door travel, this can be a significant savings.

Inexpensive, movable storage is one way to protect your significant business documents. A few minutes spent backing up documents and receipts can potentially save a lot of aggravation if you were to lose the originals. Mozy offers great backup options that could be useful to you and your business.

The internet is the perfect place to promote your home business. Make sure you design a website that is easy to navigate. If you are not sure how to go about this, then you should fork over the money to have someone do it for you. Give your customers relevant content that is informative and enlightening, and provide them with a way to contact you and make online purchases. Do research and talk to design companies to gain knowledge on the best ways to create a great website.

While reading this article, hopefully you were inspired to take your life into your own hands. You were given a lot of tips about starting a home business, and now is the time to grab the bull by the horns and go for it! You can keep this article for reference to read anytime you are not sure what the next step you should be taking is.

A Final Fern Tribute, the Witch's Hat Lichen, and an Unidentified Gelatinous Blob

It?s about time to get back to your regularly scheduled blogging. But before we leave the Southern Hemisphere entirely, let?s have one last Best of the Rest Post. It?s an assortment of stuff that didn?t fit elsewhere in my austral detour, but is nonetheless cool.

I don?t know if this is the legendary New Zealand silver fern, but it sure looks like it. Silver ferns are one of the the unofficial symbols of the country and the symbol of the New Zealand All Blacks, Rugby Team of Renown. I found this one lying on a trail in the Waipoua Forest that I visited to see the giant kauri pines. If it is the true silver fern, it fell off a tree-sized plant and is a small part of a much bigger frond. This is the underside.

Here is a closeup, showing the fern sori I discussed here:

Because I just can?t get enough of gorgeous and unusual ferns, here are some more. Would you guess that this is a fern, to look at it? Looks like just another simple leaf on the forest floor.

But underneath, there was this:

While at the Waimangu Volcanic Valley (the area it sits in is New Zealand?s answer to Yellowstone.) I had the bright idea to see if I could rig a crude ?microscope camera? by taking a picture through my 10X loupe/hand lens. This was the result. I have dubbed it ?Nerd Cam?.

Here is a closeup through Nerd Cam, which works well enough that you can see the crests on a few of the individual sporangia, or spore houses, in this sorus (a collection of sporangia ? see this post for a discussion and picture of sori/sporangia).

Still don?t see that sporangia and their Roman-helmet like crests? Look at where the arrow is pointing:

To review, this is what an individual leptosporangite fern sporangium looks like:

See them in the closeup now?

Here are some more unusual ferns and their beautifully patterned sori:

Now this was something I?d definitely never seen before: a conical orange lichen in the shape of a witch?s hat. This was also spotted at Waimangu Volcanic Valley. Anybody know what it is?

Note the hollow interior, which I attempted to show here:

For the cycad lovers out there, here is a true tree cycad. Cycads are wonderful early-evolved plants that make seeds and cones but no true flowers. They?re closely related to conifers and gingkoes. In most of North America, you?re lucky to see the short, shrub-like cycads. Tree cycads are a novelty.

Look carefully at that trunk. Look a little different? That?s because the trunk is covered with the leaf scars of the cycad fronds that have fallen off. The beautiful patterns are where the vascular bundles of the plant ? the tubes in the tree that carry water and sugars ? used to connect.

You can read more about cycads in a post I wrote called ?The Surprising Lives of Cycads?.

Finally, we have this mystery blob, which was scattered along a beach I visited in Queensland, Australia. I have NO idea what it is. Can anyone help? At first, I thought they might be man-made rubber. But they tore quite easily when I touched them.

Here?s another:

Finally, here?s a video of some native Australian Spinifex Hopping Mice, Notomys alexis, from the Cleland Wildlife Park in South Australia, doing what small desert rodents apparently do best: burrowing, and zipping about like electrons. And really, who can get enough of cute small rodent video?

Glitch may delay news of Mars rover's landing

NASA is just 20 days away from landing a car-size rover on Mars, but mission managers might have to wait a little longer than anticipated to learn whether the challenging touchdown succeeds or not.

NASA's 1-ton Curiosity rover, the centerpiece of the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission, is slated to land on the Martian surface on the night of Aug. 5 to investigate whether the planet is, or ever was, capable of harboring past or present microbial life. But first, the rover will have to survive a harrowing journey through the Red Planet's atmosphere ? a process that has been nicknamed the "seven minutes of terror."

"[T]he Curiosity landing is the hardest NASA robotic mission ever attempted in the history of exploration of Mars, or any of our robot exploration," John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, said in a news briefing Monday at the agency's headquarters in Washington, D.C. "This is risky business."

And a glitch in an aging Mars orbiter may compromise Earth's communications with Curiosity slightly, forcing the mission team to wait a few more agonizing minutes to learn the fate of their $2.5 billion rover. [ How Curiosity's Nail-Biting Landing Works (Pictures) ]

An unprecedented landing
Since Curiosity is too large for an airbag-assisted landing, NASA is using a complex and unprecedented sky crane system to safely lower the rover onto the surface of the Red Planet. This sequence of events ? called entry, descent and landing (EDL) ? will last approximately seven minutes.

"Those seven minutes are the most challenging part of this entire mission," said Pete Theisinger, MSL project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "For the landing to succeed, hundreds of events will need to go right, many with split-second timing and all controlled autonomously by the spacecraft."

As Curiosity streaks through the Martian atmosphere, the spacecraft must slow itself from roughly 13,200 mph to zero in only seven minutes. The rocket-powered sky crane, which acts similar to a backpack with three nylon cords attached, will help to control the rover's descent.

"EDL is like a game of dominoes," said Doug McCuistion, director of the Mars Exploration Program at NASA Headquarters. "With the release of the crew stage, that's the first domino that's been flicked. If one of them is out of place, it's very likely that the last domino does not fall, which means MSL Curiosity may hit the ground harder than we'd like it to."

Questions about communications
To add even more drama to the situation, Curiosity's mission managers may have to wait several minutes before finding out whether the rover survived its landing.

In early June, a NASA spacecraft in orbit around the Red Planet, called Mars Odyssey, suffered a malfunction on one of its reaction wheels, an instrument that helps control the probe's attitude in space. ?

"Odyssey looks like it may not be where we expect it to be," McCuistion said.

The glitch does not pose a risk to Curiosity's impending arrival at the Red Planet, officials said. But Mars Odyssey's original orbit would have given it a complete view of Curiosity's landing, so the probe had been pegged to act as an orbiting outpost to relay communications and data back to mission managers on Earth.

With Odyssey in the picture, mission managers may be able to confirm Curiosity's touchdown by 10:31 p.m. PDT on Aug. 5 (1:31 a.m. EDT Aug. 6). Without Odyssey, however, mission controllers may not know the outcome of the landing maneuver until 10:35 p.m. PDT or later.

Engineers are currently assessing whether they can move Odyssey to prevent any significant communications delays, but a final decision has yet to be made.

Still, all is not lost on the communications front. NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and the European Space Agency's Mars Express will be monitoring Curiosity from above as it attempts to land on Mars. Both probes, however, will not have a full view of the event, and both are only able to collect and store information before sending it to Earth three to four hours later.

"It's simply how the data gets returned to us, and how timely that data is," McCuistion said.

In the meantime, mission controllers are awaiting Curiosity's landing with a mix of nerves and excitement, NASA officials said.

"I think the team feels that they've done everything they can do to make this successful," Theisinger said. "That being said, success is not assured. Any one of different kinds of problems could end up in end-of-mission, but I think the team is very positive. Morale is good."

Apple Reverses Its Decision on EPEAT Certification for Macs

?

It looks like Apple will remain green, after all. On Friday, SVP of Hardware Engineering Bob Mansfield?posted on Apple?s website, rescinding the company?s earlier decision to pull EPEAT certification for its computers. After the announcement was met with much protestation from activists and Apple customers alike, Mansfield admitted the move was a mistake.

It was just last weekend when word got out that Apple had asked EPEAT, the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool, to exclude its machines from their list. EPEAT?s head noted that Apple?s future ?design directions? did not coincide with the Council?s standards.

Possibly the loudest reaction to the news was the City of San Francisco publicizing that it would only approve city funds for computers if the machines were EPEAT-certified.

Apple?s latest MacBook Pro with Retina display, announced last month, isn?t EPEAT-certified, but 39 other Macs and monitors the company makes are.

?Our relationship with EPEAT has become stronger as a result of this experience, and we look forward to working with EPEAT as their rating system and the underlying IEEE 1680.1 standard evolve,? Mansfield penned in his online letter. ?Our team at Apple is dedicated to designing products that everyone can be proud to own and use.?

Why Don't the Old Ways Work in Business and Customer Service Any

?Why don?t the old ways work with customers anymore?? ? I hear this question frequently when?I?m speaking?at a business event or starting?a new? customer service consulting engagement.

First off: in certain, important ways, the old ways do still work.? Let me explain. What makes you great at social media and online customer service are very often the same skills that made you great before Facebook (sorry:? The Facebook) was even invented. In other words, social media is a dramatic amplifier of the positive, and of the negative?and if what you do for customers in your business is positive enough (great product, great problem resolution process, consideration of the emotional aspect of every interaction with your customers), the word can get out on a much bigger scale than ever before.

But the context of our work has undeniably changed, because of the recent?changes that have swept through the world of commerce.?Changes of?which social media is only one. Since the advent of the internet, and, most specifically, the broad use of the Web starting in the mid-1990s, there?s been a dramatic transformation of the competitive landscape. The changes?brought on by?these new communication and distribution channels are in many ways revolutionary, and they?re causing disruptions akin to those of past revolutions.

For example, our sense of timeliness: What was plenty fast this time last year feels draggy now to the very same customers because of changing expectations brought by mobile technology, social media?induced restlessness, the incredible efficiency of vendors like Amazon.com, and other factors.

For a parallel, look at the changes of the mid-nineteenth century. During this period the stability of rural and village life was thrown into disarray due to a host of technological advances, including those making it possible to preserve and transport food. Customers could now purchase edibles from across the country or around the world: The farmer in New England who had been able to count on a captive local market for whatever would graze or grow in his stony fields was now competing against topsoil-rich Illinois and lamb-friendly New Zealand. The result was a mass abandonment of farms throughout the region.

The transformation was striking: Go for a walk in the woods of New Hampshire or Vermont and you?ll still see the proliferation of old stone walls and foundations that attest to the abandoned farms and homesteads of this era.

Or just remember your high school poetry. This New England exodus is the backstory of Robert Frost?s stuck-in-his-ways neighbor still trying to mend a fence: He doesn?t realize times have changed and the fence, at most, is now preventing runaway trees. There are no cattle to contain anymore.

You can?t afford to be similarly left behind by today?s transformational technologies. It?s crucial to invest brain cells, time, and money to keep up with what it takes to hold on to your customers, now that we?re all playing on a global, digitally connected field.

Sales: They Bounce Like That - Small Business Trends

sales business cartoon

I conceived this cartoon while inking another with a precipitous sales drop.

After drawing the line for the steep decline, I thought it might be fun if it had picked up some momentum. I drew the three little bounces and a quick approximation of this caption on the side of the paper and finished up the original cartoon I?d been working on.

It?s not often that one of your own pieces inspires another, but I?ve learned to never look a gift cartoon in the caption.

Should my Small Business be on Social Media? - Internet Threats Blog

small business owner using social mediaI recently read a good article from Mashable.com entitled ?5 signs Your Small Business Should Be on LinkedIn? and some very good points were stressed out that I would like to expand on. It is no secret that small businesses and start-ups have an uphill battle ahead of them in order to survive the first trying years. Having a small team and limited resources tends to put a strain on an otherwise smart strategy and many business owners are weary of even opening up a Facebook page given the many online risks they can encounter.

A recent poll done by AT&T revealed that 40% of companies admitted to having no training or governance of social media and still 60% of small businesses were planning on spending as much or more in 2012 as they did in 2011 on online marketing.

With all this information in front of you, it may be hard to decide whether or not to add a social media plan to your current strategy. Mashable?s article provides 5 signs why your small business should get on LinkedIn, I want to expand that and include other social media channels as well, hoping that this article will help you in making that decision.

  1. You employ 1-50 People
LinkedIn has been a huge success for small businesses, it allows you to pick one of two categories: 1-10 employees or 11-50 employees. The second category is where most businesses fall under. LinkedIn?s advanced search tool enables users to narrow results by keyword, location, industry, and company size.
Social Media: Your size can become your strength. Large companies tend to outsource their social media strategy or create an in-house department and depending on the size of the enterprise it?s hard for them to keep track of all of their campaigns. But if your company is less than 50 people and you, as the owner or founder, have direct communication with all departments, size plays to your advantage.
  2. You have something to say
LinkedIn gives your company a voice, you can post updates on its behalf and share your content on the company page, which in turn can be seen by its followers. You also have the option of adding a widget that lives on your page that displays your updates and posts.
Social Media: Company updates are possible on every major social platform. If you have something to say; something unique and valuable to your customers and followers, social media will really help you put the message out there, and if it really is valuable then your followers will do the free promotion for you.
One of the risks of having a metaphorical cyber-microphone online is that anything you say can and will be used against you. Make sure you set up a proper reputation management plan before you engage in social media.
  3. You?re hiring
LinkedIn is a network for job seekers and professionals. If you don?t want to go through 1,000 applications and scan through countless of less-than-competent resumes, LinkedIn gives you a hand by categorizing and scoring each applicant based on your requirements and their skills.
Social Media: Social Media has now become an agency?s favourite tool when it comes to filtering down candidates. Just a simple Google search can cut your candidates list by half, and a little bit more research can easily point out who the best fit candidate is. Surprisingly, a large number of social media users still have their profile security settings open, exposing their everyday activity for the world to see.
  4. You need advice
LinkedIn ?Answers? and Groups are a gold mine of information. You can ask and answer questions to support your professional endeavors. You can join groups that speak to your industry and see what others have been doing on LinkedIn to generate engagement.
Social Media: The internet is our library ? countless amounts of information at our fingertips! You can easily find answers to help you develop and grow your business. There are online forums dedicated to small business owners and even online tutorials for every single thing imaginable.
Search Engines are also the yellow pages of today and customers are searching for answers to their everyday problems, your business could be the solution they are looking for but you won?t be found if you?re not online.
  5. You?re a Non-Profit
LinkedIn lets you create a company page, a group or both on behalf of your charity or service organization. You can use this channel to generate and host richer discussion and engagement. Make sure that it is all being moderated and that the conversation is of value to your supporters.
Social Media: If you?re a small or up-and-coming charity you need to be on social media, it exponentially leverages word-of-mouth. Online campaigns have proven a success to raise money for a cause ? it makes donating fun, easy to understand, easy to give and provides recognition for people?s generosity.

How Small Businesses Can Improve Inventory Management

July 12, 2012

Page 1 Page 2

Today?s uncertain economic environment means business owners and CFOs want to have as much cash on hand as possible for unknowns, and that means making sure your money isn?t tied up in inventory too long.

Recent data shows that privately held companies in the U.S., on average, have seen their inventory days ratio increase 16 percent since 2009. That means the number of days from when raw materials are purchased to when finished goods are sold is up ? to nearly 24 days from about 20.5 days three years ago.

Of course, some inventory growth is necessary when sales are rising, and sales have been on the increase for private companies. ?I?ve always been an advocate of the less inventory, the better, but you have to be able to meet demand,? said Michael W. McNeilly, Director of Advisory Services for Sageworks Inc., a financial information company that analyzes privately held companies.

But he and other experts say that cash is the lifeblood of your business, so it?s a good idea to manage inventory closely. Coupled with later customer payments, which many U.S. businesses are experiencing, a longer inventory turnover cycle means less money that?s available to buy new equipment, hire or otherwise grow your business.

Is More Inventory On-Hand the Answer?

McNeilly has worked with a lot of businesses operating with the traditional belief that keeping a lot of inventory helps create a better presentation of merchandise for customers.?Some business owners may also believe more inventory allows them to obtain bulk-purchase discounts from suppliers,? he said.

?That may sound good, but bulk purchases in a lot of situations only take up space and tie up cash. It?s always a balancing act, but today?s marketplace will often allow for a smaller inventory on hand with same-day or next-day delivery on additional inventory. ?

?Having good control of your inventory allows you to not only offer a wider selection of products but also can free up significant levels of cash flow while still providing the service your customers demand,? he said.

How to Effectively Manage Inventory

Consultant Bob Phibbs, who has worked with Lumber Liquidators, Hunter Douglass and others through his firm, The Retail Doctor, says a good place to start with managing your inventory is performing a physical count. This is a good idea for insurance purposes. ?It?s also a major determiner of your store?s health,? he said.

The purchase of the site for Bt5 billion at the end of last month was the biggest deal before the new land valuations for tax assessments went into effect at the beginning of this month. Wallapa Trisorat, director of TCC |Land, said yesterday that the company decided to acquire this lot when it saw |the potential to develop the property by preserving the history and architecture |of Chinatown in Bangkok. "Before we develop this project we have to study the history and what kind of business matches this location," she said. However, Soamapat Trisorat, another director, said the project might be like Asiatique the Riverfront, a retail business that has continued to maintain the architecture and history of the location.

MIXED-USED PROPERTIES TCC Land develops mixed-used properties including lifestyle centres, residences, commercial buildings, community malls, and hotels and hospitality venues. It has investments and projects on hand both here and abroad worth more than Bt100 billion.

Diminished stimulus hopes send shares lower

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Global shares fell more than 1 percent on Thursday and the euro hit a new two-year low on concern about the world economic growth outlook and dimmed expectations for any new near-term stimulus response by the U.S. Federal Reserve.

Stocks on Wall Street tumbled after the opening bell with the weakening growth picture prompting a number of high-profile corporate earnings warnings in recent days.

The weaker-than-expected start to the second-quarter U.S. corporate reporting season, combined with expectations of slower economic growth in the world's leading economies, had encouraged hopes for the Fed to resume a policy of creating money to lower long-term interest rates, a process known as quantitative easing, or QE3.

There was some solace from data on Thursday that showed the number of Americans applying for jobless benefits fell last week to a four-year low, though some of that improvement may be temporary.

But analysts said it did little to sway the view the economic recovery has hit a soft patch.

"It's great, it's welcome news. It's not a game changer," said Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Capital in Jersey City, New Jersey.

"Whether it is broader themes in employment, GDP, industrial production, housing - there is a lot there that speaks to a headwind that is going to take some very significant time and energy to get through."

A surprise rate cut in South Korea on Thursday following a 50-basis-point cut by Brazil on Wednesday evening also underscored the growing impact the slowdown was having worldwide.

But the lack of any monetary easing by the Bank of Japan on Thursday and limited clues in the latest minutes from the Federal Reserve's June policy meeting, released on Wednesday, suggest central banks are still cautious about the need for further easing.

The Fed minutes showed the world's biggest economy would have to weaken further before its central bank took any more easing steps. The minutes did however show some officials felt more stimulus was justified.

The euro fell to $1.2165, its lowest since mid-2010. The euro last traded at $1.2184, down 0.4 percent on the day.

The yen strongly outperformed both the euro and U.S. dollar after the Bank of Japan limited itself to tweaking its asset buying program.

The dollar was last down 0.6 percent at 79.24 yen, holding above chart support at the 200-day moving average around 79.01 yen. Against the yen, the euro fell to a six-week low of 96.40 yen. It last traded at 96.60, down 1 percent on the day.

"As long as the door is open to QE3, it is difficult to see an environment where the dollar can prove materially and sustainably strong," said Camilla Sutton, chief currency strategist at Scotiabank in Toronto.

"Accordingly, we continue to expect the euro to trend lower, but avert a collapse."

EQUITIES SHUNNED

European shares followed Asian markets lower in response to the dampened prospects for any fresh stimulus measures, sending the FTSE Eurofirst 300 index <.fteu3> down 1 percent.

The MSCI world equity index <.miwd00000pus> was down 1.1 percent.

"Anyone who's expecting some sort of quantitative easing come September ahead of the (U.S. presidential) elections, I think is possibly talking their own book because at the end of the day, we're in an election year," said Brenda Kelly, market strategist at CMC Markets.

"It will be a bit of a consolidation effort over the next number of weeks as the bulls and bears fight it out."

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> fell 57.86 points, or 0.46 percent, to 12,546.67. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> dropped 10.77 points, or 0.80 percent, to 1,330.68. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> lost 36.66 points, or 1.27 percent, to 2,851.32.

Technology shares have been among the worst performers recently, bogged down by profit warnings from companies such as Advanced Micro Devices Inc and Applied Materials Inc . For the month, the S&P technology sector <.gspt> is down 4.1 percent and the PHLX semiconductor sector <.sox> is off 8.8 percent.

CHINA DATA EYED

Markets are also awaiting Friday's second-quarter gross domestic product growth number from China, which is expected to show one of the few growth engines in the world economy is faltering.

A Reuters poll showed economists expect China's growth to have slowed to 7.6 percent in the second quarter, its worst performance since the 2008/09 financial crisis.

But analysts are hopeful the world's second-largest economy would have seen the worst between April and June, and expect a pick-up in the third quarter as Beijing loosens monetary policy and fast-forwards infrastructure spending.

Oil markets were softer ahead of the data because China is such a big source of demand. Prices were also hurt as the International Energy Agency said a slowdown could cap prices.

Brent crude oil fell 81 cents to $99.42 a barrel at $99.33 and U.S. crude was at $84.83, down 98 cents.

Spot gold was down 1.3 percent at $1,556.06 an ounce. The price has fallen 1.6 percent so far this week, marking its second consecutive weekly decline.
