First direct detection sheds light on dark galaxies

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Most people think of galaxies as huge islands of stars, gas and dust that populate the universe in visual splendor. Theory, however, has predicted there are other types of galaxies that are devoid of stars and made predominately of dense gas. These "dark" galaxies would be unseen against the black backdrop of the universe.

Now, an international team of astronomers has detected several dark galaxies by observing the fluorescent glow of their hydrogen gas, illuminated by the ultraviolet light of a nearby quasar. But what exactly are dark galaxies, and what role do they play in the evolution of our universe?

"Dark galaxies are composed of dark matter and gas, but for some reason they have not been able to form stars," said Martin Haehnelt, Kavli Institute for Cosmology at the University of Cambridge. "Some theoretical models have predicted that dark galaxies were common in the early universe when galaxies had more difficulty forming stars -- partly because their density of gas was not sufficient to form stars -- and only later did galaxies begin to ignite stars, becoming like the galaxies we see today."

Haehnelt is a member of the scientific team that detected these galaxies. According to Haehnelt, one can begin to understand the importance of dark galaxies by looking at our own Milky Way. "We expect the precursor to the Milky Way was a smaller bright galaxy that merged with dark galaxies nearby. They all came together to form our Milky Way that we see today."

Another member of the team, Sebastiano Cantalupo of the University of California, Santa Cruz, agreed that dark galaxies are the building blocks of modern galaxies. "In our current theory of galaxy formation, we believe that big galaxies form from the merger of smaller galaxies. Dark galaxies bring to big galaxies a lot of gas, which then accelerates star formation in the bigger galaxies."

The techniques used for detecting dark galaxies also may provide a new way to learn about other phenomena in the universe, including what some call the "cosmic web" -- unseen filaments of gas and dark matter believed to permeate the universe, feeding and building galaxies and galaxy clusters where the filaments intersect.

"I wonder if we can indeed use this technique to see the emission of filamentary gas in the cosmic web, and if so, how close are we to seeing that?" said team member Simon Lilly of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland. "That has been something of a Holy Grail for many, many years and I think this most recent discovery of dark galaxies is a significant step toward the goal."

Miami Heat Championship Rings Awarded In Glitzy Ceremony (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

MIAMI -- LeBron James held his index finger aloft, then turned and took a walk nine years in the making.

A few moments later, a championship ring ? finally ? was his.

James and the Miami Heat celebrated their NBA title once again Tuesday night, with the ring-and-banner ceremony replete with an indoor fireworks show that immediately preceded their season opener against the Boston Celtics.

NBA Commissioner David Stern handed Heat owner Micky Arison the first ring of the night, and Arison handed the others out to executives, coaches and players.

James went last, as the crowd roared for the reigning NBA MVP.

"It's not given," James said earlier Tuesday. "These moments are not given."

Stern gave brief remarks to the crowd, starting his address by mentioning "those who were affected" by Hurricane Sandy, which struck the East Coast earlier this week. (Stern misspoke and referred to the storm Hurricane Katrina, though his point was clear.) He congratulated Heat executives and coaches, then lauded Miami's players.

"And congratulations to the Miami Heat fans," Stern said.

The only player to address the crowd was veteran Mike Miller, who spoke after warmups.

"We want to thank you guys so much for all your support," Miller said. "Without you guys, a night like tonight's not possible. The journey that starts tonight is going to be even more challenging, so we're going to need your passion, your support and your energy even more. Enjoy the game tonight and let it fly."

The rings had the words "All In" on one side, and "Family" underneath two images of the Larry O'Brien Trophy on the other. James hugged Stern briefly as the commissioner said a few words, then got a few words from Arison before checking out the box that held his newest bauble.

Players posed for a quick photo as the banner started being raised, then James and others took their rings out to examine the detail. He touched the banner as it rose behind him, then went back to checking out the ring.

Soon, they were put away, the lights came on, and the season started.

"I think we all know what another year's all about," James said. "We know what our long-term goal is. But we're not going to take any short cuts. It's a process. It's always been that way for us."

The pursuit of a title is what drove James every year since joining the NBA in 2003, and he had been close twice, ultimately falling in his first two trips to the NBA Finals.

His breakthrough came last June, and James capped his stellar postseason with a triple-double in Game 5 of the finals against Oklahoma City, as the Heat capped off the second title in franchise history.

"I'm not going to take this moment for granted," James said. "It doesn't happen to everyone. I know the history of the game. I am going to live in the moment. Not going to sit here and say I'm not. It's a special moment for not only our team, for our organization, for the city, whoever's a Miami Heat fan, our families, everything. We'll live in the moment, but we also have some other business to take care of as well."

In the long term, that means another title.

In the short term, that meant getting ready for Boston.

Miami's first ring night was an unmitigated disaster ? a 108-66 loss to the Chicago Bulls after the 2006 championship jewelry was issued. The Heat were on the other end of a banner blowout last Christmas in Dallas, where in a finals rematch they ran out to a 35-point lead shortly after halftime.

The Heat were clearly inspired by having a chance to put a damper on Dallas' day. And they expected the Celtics to feel the same way, after Miami ousted Boston in last season's Eastern Conference finals and then lured Ray Allen away in a free-agency coup over the summer.

"We were hoping that Oklahoma was playing Miami on opening night to watch ring night," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "I don't know why they chose us. But it is what it is. They deserve it. They won it last year. They get to have their day. We had our day and LeBron had to sit and watch that.

"It's his payback night," Rivers added. "And he deserves it. He really does. He's probably gone through more scrutiny than any player, maybe any athlete, that I can ever remember. In that light, I'm happy for him."

The Celtics were not on the court for the ceremony, which preceded the usual pregame warmup period.

"To be able to raise that banner in front of our fans, it took a tremendous amount of work collectively," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We don't want to diminish that."

Indigenous vs. multinationals in Mexico wind power

(AP Photo/Mark Stevenson, file)

(AP) ? Mexico is putting up wind power turbines at a breakneck pace and the expansion is pitting energy companies against the Indians who live in one of the windiest spots in the world.

The country is posting one of the world's highest growth rates in wind energy, and almost all of it is concentrated in the narrow waist of Mexico known as the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, where winds from the Pacific meet winds from the Gulf of Mexico, spawning places so wind-blown that one town's formal name is simply "Windy."

The largely indigenous residents of the Isthmus complain the wind farms take control of their land, affect fish and livestock with their vibrations, chop up birds and pit residents against each other for the damage or royalty payments. They also claim they see few of the profits from such projects.

President Felipe Calderon has made the inauguration of wind parks one of the main focuses of his administration's ambitious pledge to cut Mexico's carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2020, and on Tuesday ? as he has done before ? he stopped by the state of Oaxaca to inaugurate a new clutch of wind turbines, praising the extra income they provide for some farmers.

"Yes, you can fight poverty and protect the environment at the same time. This is a clear example," Calderon said at the opening ceremony.

But as in the past, he did so under tight security, as local protesters threatened to mar the inauguration. The president's office normally publishes a detailed schedule of his planned activities, but didn't do so with Tuesday's inauguration, keeping it under wraps until the event took place.

So far in 2012, Mexico has posted a startling 119 percent increase in installed wind-power capacity, more than doubling the 519 megawatts it had last year, the highest annual growth rate listed in the magazine Wind Power Monthly's "Windicator" index. Mexico had only 6 megawatts when Calderon took office in 2006.

While Mexico, with a total of around 1.3 gigawatts of wind power, is still a tiny part of the world's estimated 244 gigawatt capacity, it offers an insight into what happens when the industry focuses overwhelmingly on large farms dominated by large companies that are concentrated in a small, desirable area.

It has been mainly Spanish firms like Iberdrola, Union Fenosa and Gamesa, and U.S. firms like Sempra Energy, that have built the huge wind towers that now crowd the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, leaving the local population feeling invaded. Only 4 of Mexico's 17 wind farms are located outside the isthmus.

It raises the question of whether bigger is always better.

"We are asking these multinationals to please get out of these places," said Irma Ordonez, an activist from the Zapotec Indian town of Ixtepec, Oaxaca. "They want to steal our land, and not pay us what they should."

"When they come in they promise and promise things, that they're going to give us jobs, to our farmers and our towns, but they don't give us anything," said Ordonez, who traveled to Mexico City in October to protest outside the offices of a Mitsubishi Corp.

Industry sources say the distrust is unmerited, given the potential benefits to the poverty-stricken farming and fishing towns on the isthmus.

The latest battle focuses on a huge, 396-megawatt off-shore wind farm planned for a narrow spit of land in a lagoon near the village of San Dionisio del Mar, Oaxaca.

A source close to the project, who was not authorized to speak on the record, said the project had been approved by village assemblies, would have little impact on fishing activities in the lagoon and would contribute an amount equal to about half the township's annual budget in coming years in compensation and royalties.

But opponents and supporters engaged in a tense standoff outside the town in October, when a group of men blocked roads to prevent a planned demonstration against the wind farm.

Saul Celaya, a Huave Indian farmer and San Dionisio resident, said the lagoon project would damage mangrove swamps where fish, shrimp and other sea life breeds, and scare off the fish that locals depend on.

"Just when they were doing soil studies, there was a mass die-off of fish," Celaya said, adding that projects opponents "are being intimidated, they're afraid to leave their houses, they're threatened."

The industry source denied the company was intimidating anyone, but acknowledged the project had suffered some delays due to disputes within the community.

Others say it didn't have to be this way, big corporations pitting villagers against villagers. There are proposals to have local towns start their own wind farms, so that they could decide where they would be situated and where profits should go.

Rodrigo Penalosa, an activist who supports the town of Ixtepec's proposed 100-megwatt community wind farm, noted that "the community has already approved it. The problem is that the (government) Federal Electricity Commission won't allow the community project to get access to the network.... but it does allow the multinationals access."

Sergio Oceransky, whose Yansa Group is trying to help kick-start the community wind project, said the commission is asking for financial guarantees of millions of dollars "that no community in Mexico could meet."

"These are requirements that are basically designed to ensure that only projects presented by multinationals can compete," said Oceransky, who claims that such guarantees are not required by federal law.

The commission did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

With a limited transmission capacity for the projects, and the last lots of line capacity being auctioned off, the situation is becoming critical; what could be a sterling example of alternative energy production is threatening to become a permanent political dispute in southern Mexico.

"This is the last chance," Oceransky says.

Purdue focused on finding a way to prevent breast cancer | WLFI ...

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - New research in breast cancer is ongoing all around the world and Purdue University is playing a major role.

In early October of this year, Purdue hosted the Third International Breast Cancer Prevention Symposium. People from all over the world, including researchers from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), attended seminars on campus.

They all came together to talk prevention in West Lafayette. It's an area where research has been lacking, according to researcher Sophie Lelievre, Ph.D.

Lelievre and her team are working in prevention, hoping to figure out a way to one day prevent breast cancer from developing.

"I don't think people realize it's not just one breast cancer, it's several types of breast cancer," explained Lelievre.

One woman diagnosed with breast cancer may not have the same type of breast cancer as another patient. Basically, that means it will be very difficult to find a one-size-fits-all cure and why Lelievre believes prevention is the what we need to focus on.

"There are a lot of exciting things happening in terms of, people thinking in terms of prevention," she said.

Unity Healthcare oncologist Glen Papioannou, MD, doesn't believe we'll find a cure in our lifetime.

"It's possible but I think it is unlikely," said Dr. Papioannou.

Dr. Papioannou does believe, however, we could be just decades away from treating breast cancer as a chronic condition.

"Even if we cannot cure the cancer, we can control it to where the patient does not die of it but they keep kind of going on and on and on," he explained.

How they'll be able to keep going on and on will be through the development of new treatments. Research put into action leads to more options for patients.

For example, it took lots of research to develop MammoSite Targeted Radiation. This treatment is available to certain breast cancer patients at IU Health Arnett Cancer Services.

Medical Physicist Douglas Fry, MD, explains how radiation is delivered to patients who've undergone a lumpectomy.

"The applicator resides within the woman's breast," he demonstrated. "It's very flexible, very soft and very tolerated by patients."

Fry said this localized radiation can increase disease-free survival and a better quality of life for the patient. Treatments are twice daily for five days and from walking in the door to walking out, it takes about 20 minutes, that's it.

"A woman over 50 with unifocal disease who is a candidate for a lumpectomy, is probably a candidate for partial breast radiation as well," said Dr. Fry.

The bottom line: Even if we don't see a cure the way most of us envision, one day soon it may be possible for breast cancer to no longer be a "terminal" disease.

That's great news for those battling the disease and those at risk. Making it a reality could be thanks to the work being done right now at Purdue University by scientists like Lelievre and her colleagues.

YouTube Is Testing Out A New Design For Pages With More Navigation Options

4481461680_4273d06822_zMost companies tend to test new features and product designs in the wild with a small subset of people. The great thing about that is on the Internet, the world is a tiny place. A few tipsters have sent in some screenshots and a video of a new design that YouTube is testing out, and we've confirmed that it's legitimate.

Fans fill SF streets to celebrate Giants' win

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Thousands of baseball fans took to the streets of San Francisco to celebrate the Giants World Series victory, with revelers gathering on corners, in parks and at watering holes as car horns blared long into the night.

Fans across the city left their televisions and rushed outside, greeting diners, bar patrons and other merry makers Sunday night after the Giants defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-3 to sweep the Series for their second title in three years.

Small fires broke out in trash cans here and there, but the violence and vandalism appeared to have been kept to a minimum a few hours after the last pitch.

"We're watching out for any major flareups and fires," said police spokesman officer Carlos Manfredi. "We want to maintain public safety at all times, and don't want to put first responders in any danger."

He said police were responding to certain hot spots but had no reports of serious problems. No arrest figures were available.

KGO-TV reported that at least three bonfires flared on Mission Street with fans fueling them with couches, signs, newspaper racks, and other items. Firefighters had to be escorted in by riot police to fight some of the fires.

At Polk and Bush streets in the city's Polk Gulch neighborhood, hundreds of fans sprayed champagne, set of off firecrackers and blocked traffic for at least two hours after the game.

Several blocks away, police clad in riot gear looked on as revelers danced around Civic Center plaza where they watched the game on the Jumbotron.

The thousands of fans assembled there exploded in a roar with the final out.

Anthony Yos, 10, hugged his brother Luciano Yos, 15 and the two danced in an embrace with their parents.

"This is the greatest thing," Anthony said with a smile that could go no wider. "The Giants are my favorite team."

Someone in the crowd launched fireworks a few minutes after the game and the park was awash with fans, strangers hugging strangers and wine bottles and marijuana cigarettes being freely passed through the crowd despite a heavy police presence.

"This is San Francisco, "said Laura Chu. "We know how to party."

Sara Vivas brought her 6-year-old daughter Briana Cepeda from Oakland to view the game and join the celebration. They were both clad head-to-toe in Giants garb.

"This is something she will remember forever," Sara said.

Bars of all stripes, from the Castro to Chinatown were packed with supporters of the beloved Giants.

So-called pedicabs whisked fans down roads blocked to traffic and revelers enjoyed a New Year's Eve-like freedom to roam up and down streets usually clogged with traffic.

Mayor Edwin Lee announced the ticker-tape parade would be held Wednesday at 11 a.m., down Market Street to Civic Center Plaza

"The rain in Detroit couldn't dampen the drive, talent and determination of the San Francisco Giants team tonight. Once again, the Giants brought our City together as we all cheered on our hometown heroes to another remarkable World Series victory," he said.

The 2010 parade drew hundreds of thousands fans, who lined the streets of downtown San Francisco. The parade ends at City Hall.

The party started early in Civic Center park, with many showing up hours before the 5 p.m. game on a nice Indian Summer day in San Francisco.

The city's ubiquitous food trucks did a brisk business and drummers of all types beat their instruments throughout the game.

"Where else in the world do you want to be tonight," replied Dave Wormald of Toronto. Wormald and two other colleagues were in town for a business meeting and were watching the game at their hotel when they decided to embark for City Hall.

"This is the place to be," said Jim Vliet, Wormald's colleague.

ASUS unveils RT-N12HP WiFi router with extra-long antennas: compensating for anything?

ASUS unveils RTN12HP WiFi router with extralong antennas compensating for much

If getting long-range WiFi is a perpetual battle, ASUS just started a nuclear war. Its fresh RT-N12HP router carries a pair of (thankfully removable) high-gain, 9dBi antennas and a separate signal amplifier that can jointly boost the range of the router's 802.11n wireless up to 300 percent versus challengers that reach the same 300Mbps peak speed. Beyond that, the hotspot mostly claims sheer flexibility as its virtue with support for as many as four separate WiFi networks and a fast toggle between pure router, access point and repeater modes. Once ASUS confirms that we can grab the N12HP in specific countries, it'll likely deliver a good signal from corner to corner in most any home -- and invite some Freudian interpretations.

Senad Hadzic: An Inspirational Walk to ... - Morocco World News

By Houda El Mouatassim

Morocco World News

Marrakech, October 27, 2012

Annually, particularly during the twelfth month of the Islamic year, Millions of Muslims from every social status, color, ethnicity and culture make pilgrimage to Mecca as it is one of the five pillars of Islam. Hajj is one of the most important gatherings in Islam where Muslims get together in the same place, wearing the same clothes, performing the same rituals that will bring them closer to God and purifies their bodies from their earlier sins.

In order to reach Mecca, Muslims from every corner of the world take different means of transportation varying from planes to auto cars to even boats depending on how close or how far their countries are from Mecca.

However, what is new this year is that a Bosnian named Senad Hadzic chose to reach Mecca using no means of transportation other than his two feet. The 47 year old man started his journey from his hometown Banovici in northeastern Bosnia back on December 10th 2011 setting his mind on reaching Mecca during the following year?s season of Hajj which was due to commence this October.

Senad attained Mecca on October 18th after crossing 5700km on foot and facing many difficulties along the way amongst which are bearing -35 ?C in Bulgaria and 55 ?C in Jordan, waiting for permission to walk across the Bosphorous Bridge connecting Europe to Asia for 20 days since it is only allowed for vehicles, trekking through war-zones in the Syrian terrain, and being held up on the Saudi Arabian border for two months. ?I?m not afraid of a tank or a bullet, only God. And then when I get to Mecca I will say a prayer for all of us.? said Senad Hadzic in his interview with NPR?s The World.

Senad said that he decided to travel on foot after dreaming about it. He started his journey with a very insignificant sum of money, some maps, the Quran, and added to these belongings the flags of all seven countries he crossed before reaching his holy destination. He endured staying the night in mosques or in the street when he had nowhere else to go, but most of the time, he was welcomed to stay in the homes of different people from different religious beliefs and ethnicities who admire his faith, devotion and sense of adventure. ?An old Turkish wise man appeared and when he saw that I came from Bosnia to Istanbul on two feet, he offered me the money to sit on an airplane and go directly to Mecca for the Hajj, but I rejected this.? Senad said.

Unlike many people who find excuses for not going to Hajj such as having too much business to tend to, being too old or too young to do it, Senad decided to fulfill the fifth pillar of Islam and chose to take the longest and hardest way to go to Mecca. By walking there, he proved that everything he endured was for the love of God and hopes to be an inspiration to everyone who hears about his exceptional act of faith.

Prophet Mohamed peace be upon him taught us that Muslims are rewarded for every step they take to reach a Mosque in order to do their prayers, thus comes Senad?s unprecedented choice in such a journey. Walking for 314 days, devoting it to thinking about God and about a new way to worship Him and be closer to Him is an act of courage and piety worthy of our respect and admiration.

I am interested in joining and playing a couple of characters. I would like to be Oda Nobunaga, and an Original character. This character would be a young male kabuki actor that serves under the samurai lord Oda Nobunaga as a personal entertainer and a semi-shudo vassel ( In place of Oda Nobunaga's relationship with Mori Ranmaru.) Would this be okay? If so I'll create character sheets ASAP.

Disney Performing Arts: A New Way to Explore Theater & Music

Posted on Wednesday, 24th October 2012 by Nicole Mancini

Are you looking for a way to spruce up your vocal skills? Want to find a sure-fire way to perform confidently during your next music recital??Are you an aspiring actor searching for tips on how to impress the studios at that next big audition? Do you have children interested in the performing arts? If you answered ?yes? to any of these questions, then considering Disney Performing Arts programs may be just what you or a family member needs to showcase and develop talent through exclusive opportunities only Disney can provide.

?

Image:?Study the arts with the pros through Disney Performing Arts, a series of workshops, festivals, and performance opportunities held at Walt Disney World and Disneyland.

Since 1955, over 30,000 groups from states across America and six different continents have participated in Disney Performing Arts. The program, which is held at both the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and the Disneyland Resort in California, is a series of informative workshops, exciting competitions, and entertaining festivals and events designed to help individuals who are interested in performance whether it be vocal, theater, dance, or instrumental. Participants can sing, dance, and shine on Disney stages while building confidence, character, and memories that will last a lifetime.

?

Image:?Disney Performing Arts programs are available for students beginning at age 7.

?

Disney Performing Arts, sponsored by the National Association for Music Education, is offered for students in elementary, middle, and high school; there is also a series of programs for those who are in college. Many of the thousands of participants in the program use their experiences to pursue successful careers in the professional performance industry. This includes actress Jennifer Morrison, School of Rock?s Caitlin Hale, and musicians such as Jerry DePizzo of O.A.R., Mike Scheuchzer of Mercy Me, and jazz artist, Jessy J.

?

Image:?Young musicians can learn from professionals through a variety of Disney programs.

?

Disney Performing Arts OnStage

The OnStage program gives students the opportunity to perform live in front of international audiences at Walt Disney World or Disneyland. Many park guests are familiar with seeing a high school band march down Main Street at the Magic Kingdom. Middle and high school instrumental, vocal, and dance groups are eligible to audition for such an opportunity with Disney entertainment. Selected groups participate in their ?on stage? performance while learning about the Disney standard for performance excellence. While there, students also have the opportunity to participate in exclusive workshops where they can build confidence, camaraderie, and fine-tune their skills with entertainment professionals.

Workshops for the Arts

Performers looking to advance their skills and build upon their understanding of performance arts can learn from Disney professionals through a series of workshops designed by entertainment experts and taught by Disney cast members. The workshops focus on a variety of topics and include classes such as:

  • Performance Lab
  • Puppet Lab
  • Master Class: Percussion
  • Soundtrack Session: Instrumental
  • Improvisational Acting
  • Soundtrack Session: Vocal
  • Academy Show Choir
  • Auditions & Careers: Acting
  • Disney Broadway Magic
  • Careers in Costuming
  • Disney Sings: Young Performer
  • Disney Dancin?
  • Disney Auxilliration (auxilliary, pom squad, and color guard)

The workshops are offered for a variety of levels beginning with younger performers aged seven and up. Classes are offered in two and three hour formats to instrumental, choral, and dance ensembles, marching bands, theater groups, and auxiliary units. Students will have the chance to practice on Disney stages and other unique locations nearby. Costs vary depending upon the program and its offerings, but begin at $60 per person and can go as high as over $1,000 per group.

Workshop Highlights

I really am amazed at the wide variety of workshop topics that Disney offers through the Performing Arts program. One that struck me as a very unique experience is that of Disney Sings in which students record an excerpt from an animated Disney feature film?s soundtrack. While doing so, they are guided by a professional Disney vocalist who helps build confidence and skill. I also thought that the Puppet Lab was a great offering because it gives students experience working with Disney puppets and mastering techniques needed for live shows. Auditions & Careers: Acting simulates the life of a professional actor including an audition, rehearsal time, and performance of a scene from a Disney production.

Festivals & Competitions

In addition to providing training and opportunities to showcase talent, Disney Performing Arts also offers exciting festivals and competitions for performers. Students can compete during numerous events year around at the Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. Festivals are judged by nationally recognized adjudicators or industry professionals. As a result, students receive valuable feedback that can help in future endeavors.

Festival Disney

One such event is Festival Disney, a bi-annual event held at Walt Disney World on select weekends from March through June. This competitive festival offers middle school and high school performing arts groups a chance to perform and receive feedback from professionals. The event is open to choirs, orchestras, bands, and auxiliary ensembles and even includes awards and medals for the top competitors.

?

Image:?Groups compete and interact with leading music educators at the bi-annual Festival Disney event.

?

The Disney Honors

For those looking for less competition while training, The Disney Honors is a non-competitive festival that takes place each spring in Walt Disney World. According to Disney, it ?challenges students to reach new musical heights and features performances, clinics, guest speakers, and feedback from an outstanding panel of evaluators.? The festival ends with a semi-formal gala celebrating everyone?s achievements. All students are recognized with a commemorative award and medal for their participation in the festival.

Disney Jazz Celebration

One of the most exciting opportunities for middle and high school instrumentalists and vocalists is the Disney Jazz Celebration. This festival brings together students and nationally recognized jazz educators from around the world to perform, critique, and teach in a competitive event over the course of a weekend. During this time, signature events are a part of the celebration and include performances and personalized clinics with renowned jazz artists. Even more so, students also enjoy GRAMMY Camp- Basic Training sessions presented by the GRAMMY foundation; the class includes a panel of music professionals who offer insight into the many music careers available today.

?

Image:?Grammy-nominated saxophonist Kirk Whalum is among the legendary performers who have worked with students at the annual Disney Jazz Celebration.

?

In Closing?

All in all, Disney Performing Arts promises to be an invaluable opportunity for students and young adults to hone skills and learn from professionals. Groups and individuals may participate in the program?s wide variety of offerings. Disney?s?commitment?to excellence proves that these experiences are something any aspiring performer would enjoy and find helpful while training for a career in the arts.

Can I get a cash out refinance for home improvements if I have less ...

My husband and I?want to refinance soon.? We bought our home in 2008 for $311,000 and have made several improvements.? Based on similar local sales, I believe it will appraise for around $320,000 now.??We currently owe about $278,000, so?we do not have 20% equity.??We would also like to finish?the basement, which I am estimating will cost about $20-$25k, or possibly less, because we?are willing to?do some of the simpler work ourselves (painting, etc.).??What are?the options?? Can?we do a cash out refinance???We are?already paying PMI, so what are the pros/cons of?cashing out on?a first?mortgage, if we are eligible?? Do any lenders look at the estimated value after improvements for the refinance?? Would we be better off?refinancing the first, then getting a second for the improvements, or would we even qualify for?a loan like this?? (Our credit scores are in the 750 range,?debt ratio is less than 20% with mortgage, and we have 4 and 18 years with current employers.)

Apple adds Rubles and other currencies to app store, bumps minimum price to 089 in Europe

After announcing slightly under par financials, Apple has added more ways it can be paid for apps, though it also bumped the minimum freight to get one across Europe. The new lowest price users in France, Germany, Italy and other nations "over there" can pay for an app is now €0.89, a euro-dime bump from before -- apparently due to the weak euro and local tax hikes. On the other hand, Cupertino also added more currencies accepted at its store: South African Rand, Turkish Lira, Russian Rubles, Indian Rupees, Isreali New Shekel's, Saudi Arabian Riyal, Indonesian Rupish and UAE Dirham can all now be used to pay. Apple has tinkered with its prices before in varying amounts overseas depending on the nation, so you may want to check your own country's App Store for the news -- bad or good.

Three new crew arrive at space station with fish

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Thu Oct 25, 2012 7:15pm EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - A pair of rookie Russian cosmonauts and a veteran U.S. astronaut arrived at the International Space Station on Thursday, boosting the crew back to full strength and bringing along 32 Japanese medaka fish.

Soyuz spacecraft commander Oleg Novitskiy, flight engineer Evgeny Tarelkin and NASA's Kevin Ford ended a two-day journey with an 8:29 a.m. EDT (1229 GMT) docking at the orbital outpost as the ships sailed 254 miles above the planet.

After making sure seals between the two spacecraft were airtight, the men joined space station commander Sunita Williams, Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko to return the station to its full, six-member crew.

The $100 billion station, a project of 15 nations, had had a crew of three onboard since September 16 because of normal rotation schedules.

"It is so great to see all six of you on orbit and to see your smiling faces," William Gerstenmaier, NASA associate administrator for spaceflight, radioed to the crew from the Russian mission control near Moscow.

The 33rd space station crew blasted off on Tuesday aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Ford, who flew as the pilot on a 2009 space shuttle mission, said he noticed different noises and vibrations riding on the Soyuz, but he found the trip just as enjoyable.

"The two days went really quickly," Ford told family and friends gathered at the Russian mission control during a televised welcoming ceremony. "It was an incredible ride."

Ford's Russian colleagues, both of whom are flying for the first time, had a bit of struggle adjusting to the weightless environment of space.

"I have to admit it was a little bit difficult the first day, but then it got better and easier," one of the cosmonauts said through a translator.

"It got tolerable," the other added. "Today, we're feeling great."

One of the first orders of business was transferring 32 Japanese medaka fish from special containers aboard the Soyuz into Japan's Kibo laboratory, where aquariums have been set up for a variety of experiments.

"The fish are still alive. Aki already has checked on them. He was very worried that they make it here," one of the cosmonauts said, referring to Hoshide.

The crew will have a busy schedule in the coming days. On Sunday, the privately owned Dragon cargo ship, which arrived at the station on October 10, is due to depart.

The Space Exploration Technologies' freighter, making the first of 12 supply runs under a $1.6 billion NASA contract, will be returning with more than one ton (907 kg) of science experiments and gear from the orbital outpost, the first big load of cargo to come back to Earth since the space shuttles stopped flying more than a year ago.

The astronauts also are preparing for the arrival of a Russian cargo ship on Wednesday and a spacewalk the following day by Williams and Hoshide to try to repair a leak in a station cooling system.

Williams, Hoshide and Malenchenko are scheduled to return to Earth on November 12, leaving the three newcomers on their own until replacements arrive on December 21.
