Slife (Premium)

Where did all the hours in the work day go? The productivity app?Slife?(Premium) ($10 per month; free trial available) tries to answer that question, but, to do so, it needs more help from you than it's worth.

Slife records how you spend your time on the computer, breaks it down by application, and generates daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly reports. The problem is Slife doesn't correlate the data it collects into instructive information unless you do a lot of manual work to assign apps to categories. Several other issues weigh down Slife, too, which is simply no competitor to the more effective RescueTime (free to $9 per month), an app with the same intentions, and much more follow through.

Set Up and Features
For Slife to record your computer use, you first need to download and install a small app (5.3MB). This software only collects the data; to see the reports, you have to create an online account at Slifeweb.com. It wasn't clear to me at first that the locally installed app didn't do anything that I could see, and I was confused when launching the "Preferences" from the app (by right clicking on the Slife icon in the Windows dock), which shows only your user name and encrypted password.

Nevertheless, if you install the app and set up a Web account, you can now see how you spend your computer time. Slife records all the different programs and files you use and how long you use them. See the slideshow for examples of the Web interface.

The app needs some time to collect data, so your reports won't reveal anything interesting about your productivity until Slife has been running for a few hours?in theory. But there's still more work that the user has to do for Slife to provide useful information.

Some time-tracking productivity apps automatically assign computer programs to a category. For example, Microsoft Excel is categorized as a business application, whereas TweetDeck falls into the social media category. A good time-tracking app gives you the ability to quickly and easily tell it which of these programs or categories are good or bad for your productivity. RescueTime, for example, lets you mark your three most productive categories, and depending on your job, social media may be one of them. The problem with Slife is you have to set up the entire structure yourself.

Rather than categories, Slife uses "activities," which you can then assign to different programs, so that "business communication" might be the activity assigned to Outlook. You can add a goal for how much time you want to spend doing your activities as well.

In RescueTime, this process takes one step and is largely automated. In Slife, it's a two-step process that's completely manual.

More Limitations
Another major limitation with Slife is that it counts all activity performed in one browser as one chunk of data. In other words, it doesn't parse the time you spent on the Internet by website, so if you spend two hours researching and only 15 minutes messing around on Facebook, Slife reports 2 hours 15 minutes in whatever browser you were using. Considering how many Web apps and sites I use for my daily work?and I would presume the same of other so-called knowledge workers and students?detailed Internet information is key to understanding my productivity. If you need detailed Internet surfing reports, RescueTime does have this feature, thankfully.

When it came to looking at how I spent my time on documents, Slife got a lot of information just wrong. It showed me a Google Chrome browser icon next to "Untitled - Notepad" and "Document1 - Microsoft Word" (that is to say, documents clearly not created in Chrome). I noticed a lot of glitches and imperfect data in this section of the site.

In the main dashboard, a pie chart shows the breakdown of all activity, but only if you assign data to the activities that you may or may not have set up. Again, there's just too much manual work that's needed for Slife to be a productive productivity app.

Worst of all, the Slife Web app logged me out over and over again. While I tested the Web app over several days, I left a tab open in my browser so I could periodically check it. Every time I returned to the app and refreshed the information, Slife logged me out, easily the most frustrating thing about it.

If you need a time-tracking productivity app, try RescueTime, as Slife is more work than it's worth.

?Bully? exposes the effects of bullying on children and teens

Photo provided by The Weinstein Company.

?

There are no graphs. No statistics. No experts telling the audience how bullying is affecting America?s youth. Instead, the movie ?Bully? shows viewers, minute by heart-wrenching minute, how bullying is making the 12 years of school pure torture for children all over the nation.

Following the stories of five children, two of whom have recently committed suicide, ?Bully?, directed by Lee Hirsch and released March 30, paints a portrait of a nation-wide epidemic of childhood cruelty and incompetent adults who seem powerless or even unwilling to stop the violence.

The film?s strength lies in its in-depth investigations of the experiences that each of these five children faced or continue to face in school. Two of the children, Tyler Long and Ty Smalley, committed suicide due to the unending harassment they faced, and their stories are told by their friends and parents who still seem unable to comprehend that these children were driven to such a desperate act. In a particularly poignant scene, Ty?s best friend, a former bully himself, recounts how Ty would try not to react violently to his tormentors, instead choosing to walk away without a fight. Yet, in the one instance where Ty chose to fight back, he was suspended causing him to shoot himself weeks later, at the age of 11.

Though the stories of the children who committed suicide are deeply shocking, the experiences of those who continue to deal with this torment every day are even harder to watch. Alex Libby, who was being beaten so severely on the bus that filmmakers gave footage of the violence to his parents and school officials in order to try to stop the violence, exemplifies everything that is wrong with the way schools handle bullying on and off campus. Born premature and therefore with slight physical and social problems, Alex is beaten, choked and stabbed every day as he rides to and from school. Yet, the worst part of his experience is not the violence, which is frightening to behold. It is the utter lack of response from the school system, who accept Alex?s parents? complaints and promise action, but do nothing. The assistant principal at his school insists that the children on the bus Alex takes are ?as good as gold,? and she cheerfully brushes aside all arguments from Alex?s parents, who leave the meeting in shock and disbelief. The same assistant principal?s utter ineptitude is demonstrated once more as she allows a bully to go free with no consequences, while chastising a victim for his unwillingness to shake his tormentor?s hand.

This trend of tormented children and unsympathetic adults is played out once more in the case of Ja?Meya Jackson, a teen who, after years of constant torture, brought a gun onto her school bus to stop the bullies. Though her methods were somewhat extreme, the response of the county sheriff, as he listed off the 45 felony counts she was charged with, is utterly infuriating. His insistence that her crime could not possibly be justified fits with the continuing attitude of adults toward bullying: bullies are simply kids being kids, but when victims strike back, they are to be punished.

Yet for other children, striking back is simply not an option, as the bullies are not limited to peers at school. Kelby Johnson, a teen in rural Oklahoma, came out during high school and faced taunts and threats from students and teachers, who made school a nightmare for her. What makes Kelby?s story particularly compelling is the change her parents went through after she came out, a topic that leads to some of the most poignant scenes of the film. Though originally convinced that homosexuality is morally wrong, her parents explain how their daughter has helped them become more accepting, and their pride in how strong their daughter has been through her ordeal is obvious to behold.Yet, though supported by family and friends and initially resilient, determined not to let the hateful comments and violence get to her, Kelby eventually gives in, transferring to a different school. Throughout her ordeal, she received no sympathy from school officials or the community at large, all of whom ostracized her for expressing her true self.

Though powerful and moving in its portrayals of the torment children and teens face, ?Bully? is not quite perfect. Particularly at the start of the movie, it cuts between the stories of various families, making it difficult to follow the experiences of each child. With a duration of one hour and 38 minutes, it can seem too lengthy at times, especially at the end.

Released as unrated in theaters, some parents may be hesitant to allow their children to watch this film; however, aside from some strong language, the film provides valuable insight for people of all ages. Despite being given an R rating by the MPAA for one instance of strong language from a bully, a decision that was heavily protested by the producers as well as people throughout the nation, ?Bully? is a film that both children and adults should watch. For kids, ?Bully? shows them the impact their words and actions can have, and for adults, it proves that indifference to a victim can be fatal.

Herpes and other viruses that attack the nervous system may thrive by disrupting cell function in order to hijack a neuron's internal transportation network and spread to other cells.

Princeton University researchers made the first observation in neurons that common strains of the herpes virus indirectly take control of a cell's mitochondria, the mobile organelles that regulate a cell's energy supply, communication with other cells, and self-destruction response to infection. The team reports in the journal Cell Host and Microbe that viral infection elevates neuron activity, as well as the cell's level of calcium a key chemical in cell communication and brings mitochondrial motion to a halt in the cell's axon, which connects to and allows communication with other neurons.

The authors propose that the viruses then commandeer the proteins that mitochondria typically use to move about the cell. The pathogens can then freely travel and reproduce within the infected neuron and more easily spread to uninfected cells. When the researchers made the mitochondria less sensitive to calcium the viruses could not spread as quickly or easily.

These findings reveal a previously unknown and highly efficient mechanism that some of the most common strains of herpes viruses in humans may use to proliferate in the nervous system, said lead author Tal Kramer, a doctoral student in the lab of the paper's co-author Lynn Enquist, the Henry L. Hillman Professor of Molecular Biology and chair of Princeton's molecular biology department.

Kramer and Enquist used rat neurons to study two herpes viruses in the alpha-herpes virus subfamily: pseudorabies virus (PRV), a model alpha-herpes virus that infects animals, and herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), an extremely common human virus that causes cold sores and other lesions. Other human alpha-herpes viruses are responsible for causing diseases such as chicken pox and shingles.

"No one before has looked carefully at mitochondrial motion during alpha-herpes virus infection in neurons. We provide new insight into how these viruses damage cells in the nervous system in ways that are important for the virus to propagate," Kramer said.

"If mitochondria are stopped in their tracks and can't go anywhere, that is potentially very bad," he said. "They are not only the power plants of the cell, but regulate important processes. The virus likely acts to interfere with many of those processes."

Beyond herpes, the Princeton findings present a possible explanation for how other neurotropic viruses such as rabies, West Nile and polio attack and disrupt the nervous system, Kramer said. Although these viruses are different from the herpes family, the fact that HSV-1 and PRV had a similar effect on mitochondrial motion and function suggests that other pathogens could corrupt mitochondria in the same way, he said.

In addition, the paper lays out the implications of distorted mitochondrial function on neuron health. Mitochondrial malfunction is a known factor in non-infectious neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, Kramer said, though the pathway to this disruption is not entirely known.

"Our model raises some new and exciting possibilities for future research on other important human viruses that can invade the nervous system and cause disease," Kramer said.

"And the fact that alpha-herpes infection damages the same key cellular function as neurodegenerative disorders also is striking," he said. "Understanding how viral infection damages neurons might give us insight into how diseases like Alzheimer's do the same. The viruses we study hijack well-studied cellular pathways that might make an effective target for future therapeutic strategies."

In a healthy neuron, mitochondria move throughout the cell's elongated, tree-like structure to provide energy for various processes that occur throughout the cell. For the strenuous task of long distance intercellular communication, mitochondria move along the axon and synapses, sites of cell-to-cell contact where signaling occurs.

Calcium plays a key role in this cell communication, Kramer explained. A neuron experiences a spike in calcium levels in the axon and synapses when it receives a signal from another neuron. Though a natural rover, mitochondria contain a protein called Miro that detects this rush of calcium and stops the organelles in the synapse. The mitochondria then provide energy as the cell passes a signal along to the next neuron.

Through live-cell imaging of neurons grown in the Enquist lab, Kramer and Enquist observed how this process becomes corrupted by HSV-1 and PRV and how the viruses need the process to spread.

The chaos begins when the virus ramps up the neuron's firing of electrical signals, as was first reported in a 2009 paper published in the journal PLoS Pathogens by Enquist; first author Kelly McCarthy, a past member of Enquist's lab who received her doctoral degree from Princeton in 2011; and David Tank, the Henry L. Hillman Professor of Molecular Biology and co-director of the Princeton Neuroscience Institute.

In the latest research, Kramer and Enquist found that this spike in electrical activity floods the axon and synapses with calcium. As a consequence, the Miro proteins detect the increase in calcium and stop mitochondrial motion. The virus' control over the cell immediately dropped off, however, when Kramer and Enquist interfered with Miro's ability to respond to the uptick in calcium levels. Though the viral infection was not completely disrupted, it could not spread within or to other cells with the same efficiency.

Based on these observations, Kramer and Enquist suggest that viruses such as HSV-1 and PRV may bring mitochondria to a standstill in order to hijack their transportation. Mitochondria move about the neuron on the backs of motor proteins dynein and kinesin-1. During viral infection, mitochondria shed these proteins to stop moving when Miro detects an upsurge in cellular calcium.

Previous research has shown that HSV-1 and PRV also use kinesin-1 specifically for transport within an infected cell. Thus, Kramer said, his and Enquist's work suggests that it is very likely that the viruses disrupt mitochondrial motility so that they can hitch themselves to the now available kinesin-1 proteins and move through the nervous system more efficiently.

James Alwine, a University of Pennsylvania professor of cancer biology, said that the Princeton research is a significant contribution to a growing body of research that describes how viruses seize cellular motor proteins such as kinesin-1.

While the findings have therapeutic potential particularly in helping show how balancing cellular calcium might subdue viral infection the demonstration that viruses can move through an infected cell with the ease of something as essential as mitochondria is notable in itself, said Alwine, who is familiar with the research but had no role in it.

"Determining the specific mechanism by which Miro function is abrogated may provide additional therapeutic avenues, but this also is marvelous basic research that does not have to be justified by its therapeutic potential," he said.

"To disrupt the loading of mitochondria to motor proteins so that virions [complete virus particles] can load instead is a clever way for a virus to be transported and is a great new idea provoked by this data," Alwine said. "While other neurotropic viruses would have to be tested specifically, movement in nerve cells is required by all of them. Thus, this observation provides a starting place and a model mechanism for research with those other pathogens."

Why Not Start A Home Business Online? | Article Directory Blog

?

Are you tired of the drudgery of paying high gas prices and driving to a job in congested traffic, wishing you could stay home and work? Do you want less stress and to have more time for your children and spouse? Maybe it?s time to think about starting a home business online. You don?t have to be a business genius to get started and the results could bring a freedom you?ve never experienced before. With passion and hard work, you can carve out a niche for yourself and soon see the money rolling in.

Do you have a hobby creating something? Maybe you like to knit baby booties and mittens or you like painting holiday ornaments. There?s a market out there for just about anything you might like to create, so why not earn money doing something you enjoy? Turn a hobby into a business and not only will you earn money, you can experience personal satisfaction you may not be getting from your current job.

Perhaps you?re a painter or sketch artist. Great art is big business, so if you have the talent, you have a means to earn money with it. Whatever your medium, consider how you want to present your work and go for it. You may want to sell prints or originals of your work, even both. Original paintings and sketches will often mean more money per piece, but lower-priced prints can mean a greater volume of sales.

If you enjoy graphic work or photography, you might consider opening an online store where you can upload your designs or images on a multitude of products. More and more of these sites are popping up and require no monetary investment to open your store and maintain it. You just upload your images to the products you?d like to sell, such as t-shirts, mugs, and phone cases, name your commission, and wait for a sale.

If you don?t think you?ve got the talent to make something you can sell, there are other ways to earn money online. You might have extensive knowledge about antiques or electronics. You can use that knowledge to hit estate and garage sales to find items to sell. If you have an idea of an item?s worth and can obtain it for much less, you can then post it on an online auction site or your own website for a substantial profit.

There are a number of websites that offer hosting at little to no cost and will also help to advertise your goods. This is a great way to get traffic to your products and bring in sales. Even if you have an online store, you can use a separate website to get more exposure and network with others. Using social networking sites can also help boost sales.

You may feel as though there?s just not enough time in the day to build your brand while still commuting to a job day after day, but don?t give up. Starting a home business online takes patience and dedication. It may take a little longer for things to really take off if you have limited time to work on it, but eventually you will see your hard work pay off. You might even get to say goodbye to your current job once and for all.

Real Estate: A Great Analogy for Search Engine Optimization | | Web ...

Most folks have an understanding of the basic concepts of value in the Real Estate industry. Many people will own a house or condo at some time in their lifetime. Even if a person never ends up owning a house, they more than likely have considered buying property at some point. There are very few purchases like home buying, and real estate is offer the most analyzed.

As such, most people are aware of the key variables that determine value in the Real Estate market: 1. Foundation 2. Structure 3. LOCATION

Foundation: Most folks understand that a house is built from the foundation up. If the foundation isn?t solid, everything else can be compromised. The same is true of your SEO initiative, see: Austin SEO. A solid foundation is crucial to long-term success. And in SEO, keyword research is your foundation. Everything you do must be built upon it. Without an analysis of customer search behavior and the competitive landscape of the industry, an SEO program will lack the insight needed to get off the ground. Just like a house with a weak foundation.

Structure: While the foundation lays the building blocks of a solid property, it achieves little on its own. How many people do you know that live on a concrete slab? The value of the foundation is that it provides the base upon which a quality structure can be built. And the quality of the structure is ultimately just as important as the foundation in determining property value. As the three little pigs found out, a house made of straw holds no real value.

As you may have guessed, your website is your online house. And Google is the property inspector, assessing a wide range of factors on your website to determine the true quality of your structure. Just like in real life, architecture is crucial in the assessment of property value, as is the quality of materials used in building that structure. From an SEO perspective, property materials include:

1. Website coding: Best practices coding and structure is essential to enable Google to properly index every line of code on your online property.

2. Site Content: Although the Internet is continually changing and evolving, the one thing that has never changed is that content is king, and is now more important than ever. With keyword research and strategy comparable to a home?s structural foundation, your content should be created in a way that delivers the best possible SEO. This is achieved using optimized body content and other coding elements such as website?s page and meta titles, text headings, keyword anchor text, keyword ratios, etc. For example, if you have a page on your site related to Austin web design?, the content and wording on the page should be related to this phrase.

Location, Location, Location: The most talked about element of property value the subject?s physical address. External factors will always influence the value of a property. Even luxury properties fail to realize optimal value if they are located in low value neighborhoods. Other factors such as proximity to prime retail, demographics and crime activity can contribute significantly to real estate valuation.

Links of association also play a critical role in the search engine?s ranking for a web asset. For a search engine optimization specialist, inbound links from high quality web sites will improve your company?s value in the ranking calculation. Every day, almost in real-time, the major search engines gather and assess the links to each website. This is the primary way search engine?s like Google will determine relevance of an Internet user?s search phrase to the content on your website. If your site is associated with the Internet?s version of bad neighborhoods like link farms, you can?t expect search engines to give you anything more that a temporarily higher ranking.

Want to prove to Google that you live in a good location? Make sure your link building efforts are focused on the acquisition of quality links.

Dana White: Brock Lesnar might want to come back

During the UFC all-heavyweight main card at UFC 146 on Saturday night, one of the promotion's best-known heavyweights was sitting in crowd. Brock Lesnar, who recently retired from the UFC and went back to a career in pro wrestling, was shown on camera. He was just there as a fan ... right?

Well, maybe. UFC president Dana White hinted there may have been more to Brock Lesnar's attendance than a weekend trip to Las Vegas.

"He texted me and said, 'I want to come to the fight, but keep it quiet because I don't want to tell anybody,'" White said. "He said, 'What are you doing tonight? ... I want to talk face to face.'

"You never know with him. He might want to come back. He might just want to hang out."

Lesnar's career in the UFC just had seven fights, but four of them had a title on the line. He beat Randy Couture for the belt in his fourth MMA bout, and appeared unbeatable after a title defense against Frank Mir. A bout of diverticulitis slowed Lesnar, and he lost to Cain Velasquez and Alistair Overeem in his last two MMA bouts.

After walking away from MMA in December, Lesnar returned to WWE. His most recent matches featured a loss to John Cena and then a win over Triple H using a Kimura, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu moved he learned as a fighter.

Though he did lose his last two fights, Lesnar's talent cannot be denied. He was an NCAA Division I champion, bringing wrestling skills to the cage. He was also an unrelenting striker.

Though it's been just months since he left the UFC, he would be returning to a division that is stronger than ever. Junior dos Santos defended his belt against Mir and Velasquez TKOed Antonio Silva at UFC 146. Daniel Cormier just won the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix and emerged as a contender for the UFC belt.

If his face-to-face talk with White does lead to a return, Lesnar won't get an easy fight. He will make the already-intriguing heavyweight division more interesting.

England's Chapman wins Senior PGA by 2 strokes

(AP) ? Roger Chapman won the Senior PGA Championship, holding on for a two-stroke victory after leading comfortably throughout the final round Sunday.

Chapman led by five after 54 holes and was never really threatened Sunday. His closing 1-over 72 was his worst score of the tournament ? but it was enough to give the Englishman a win at the major championship.

Chapman, who had never won on the Champions Tour, finished at 13 under. He bogeyed three of the last five holes but had enough of a cushion that it didn't matter.

John Cook was at 11 under after a 69. Hale Irwin shot 68 to finish another stroke back.

Kenny Perry had a tournament-record 62 at Harbor Shores to finish five shots behind in ninth place.

Before this week, the only real highlight of Chapman's pro career was a win in Brazil at a European Tour event in 2000. The European Senior Tour has held only one tournament this year, so Chapman hadn't played many competitive rounds before coming to Harbor Shores.

He became the first player since Hale Irwin in 2004 to win the Senior PGA Championship after holding at least a share of the lead following each round. Chapman's third-round 64 helped him pull away from Cook, and he extended his lead on the front nine Sunday.

Chapman birdied Nos. 4 and 6, and after another birdie on the par-4 seventh, he led by nine strokes.

Cook made birdies on Nos. 9, 13 and 14, and he trailed by only four after Chapman bogeyed the par-4 14th. But Cook missed a birdie putt at No. 15, a par 5 that was the easiest hole on the course during the tournament.

A bogey on No. 17 trimmed Chapman's lead to three strokes, but he kept his tee shot in the fairway on No. 18. Chapman missed the green with his approach, but so did Cook. On an emotional walk toward the 18th green, Chapman took his hat off to acknowledge the crowd, then eventually gathered himself and calmly finished with another bogey to win by two.

There were plenty of low scores Sunday, even as the temperature hovered around 90 degrees at the 6,822-yard course. Perry began the day 15 strokes behind the leader, so winning was never realistic, but he put on a clinic, shooting 31 on each nine. Perry broke the Senior PGA Championship record for a single round of 63 set by Arnold Palmer in 1984 and Buck White in 1961, although they both did it on par-72 courses.

Peter Senior shot a 63 on Sunday ? including a 28 on the back nine ? and tied with four other players at 9 under. Sandy Lyle and Joe Daley were in that group, too. They shot 64.

Home Based Business: Quick Guide to Starting a ... - Ill & Ancient

First of all, you need to think about exactly what sort of home based business you want. Although you may already know what home based business you want to have, choosing one can be a lot harder than you might think. After all, they're so many types of home businesses to choose from! So a great place to begin is to start thinking about your interests. What do you love? Do you love children? Cars? Cooking? Helping people? Making jewelry? Any of these interests can be turned into a successful home based business because when you do something you love, you're far more likely to be successful at it.

Now you want to make a home business plan. It doesn't matter whether you're going to try and get financing for your home based business or not. You still need to have a plan for your home business. Think of it like building a birdhouse. You need a blueprint or building plans, right? The same is true for a home based business. You need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve and what steps are necessary to reach your goal. You'll also want to look at the demand for the product or service your home based business will offer and how you'll get the word out about your home based business.

Next you will want to talk to your family. Having your family's support is vital to having a successful home based business. After all, it is their home. So you need to make sure your family members are open to the idea and understand the demands and restraints that will be involved in having a home business. Let each person talk about any issues they may have and try to resolve them. Also, anticipate family problems that may come up because of your home based business, and let everybody work together on plans for handling them.

After this, designate a home based business space in your house--and make sure everyone knows the space is off-limits for anything else. When choosing the room or place for your home office, consider the equipment you'll need and any storage room you'll have to have for your home based business. If you're going to need a great deal of storage space for your products, you may want to consider renting space in a warehouse or storage facility.

Finally, purchase your equipment for your home based business. You'll want a computer, desk and chair of course, but don't forget other important equipment your home based business may require. For instance, do you need special tools to make your product? What sort of filing system is best? Is there any special software you need to purchase? Do you need a postage meter or mail scale? What about phones? Special shipping items? Make a list of everything, down to pens and legal pads, you'll absolutely have to have. This will ensure you stay focused on the essentials when making your purchases.

And don't try to buy everything you want for your home based business at first. Leave unessential items until a later time so you can spend more on what you really need. When making your purchases, don't forget you can often get great used and refurbished office and business equipment for your home based business. Just make sure it's in good working condition before you buy--the last thing you want is to have your home based business equipment spend more time in the shop being fixed than it does in your home office.
