Once considered mainly 'brain glue,' astrocytes' power revealed

Friday, March 30, 2012

A type of cell plentiful in the brain, long considered mainly the stuff that holds the brain together and oft-overlooked by scientists more interested in flashier cells known as neurons, wields more power in the brain than has been realized, according to new research published today in Science Signaling.

Neuroscientists at the University of Rochester Medical Center report that astrocytes are crucial for creating the proper environment for our brains to work. The team found that the cells play a key role in reducing or stopping the electrical signals that are considered brain activity, playing an active role in determining when cells called neurons fire and when they don't.

That is a big step forward from what scientists have long considered the role of astrocytes ? to nurture neurons and keep them healthy.

"Astrocytes have long been called housekeeping cells ? tending to neurons, nurturing them, and cleaning up after them," said Maiken Nedergaard, M.D., D.M.Sc., professor of Neurosurgery and leader of the study. "It turns out that they can influence the actions of neurons in ways that have not been realized."

Proper brain function relies on billions of electrical signals ? tiny molecular explosions, really ? happening remarkably in sync. Recalling the face of a loved one, swinging a baseball bat, walking down the street ? all those actions rely on electrical signals passed instantly along our nerves like a molecular hot potato from one brain cell to another.

For that to happen, the molecular brew of chemicals like sodium, calcium and potassium that brain cells reside in must be just right ? and astrocytes help to maintain that balanced environment. For instance, when a neuron sends an impulse, or fires, levels of potassium surrounding the cell jump dramatically, and those levels must come down immediately for the brain to work properly. Scientists have long known that that's a job for astrocytes ? sopping up excess potassium, ending the nerve pulse, and restoring the cells so they can fire again immediately.

In the paper in Science Signaling, Nedergaard's team discovered an expanded role for astrocytes. The team learned that in addition to simply absorbing excess potassium, astrocytes themselves can cause potassium levels around the neuron to drop, putting neuronal signaling to a stop.

"Far from only playing a passive role, astrocytes can initiate the uptake of potassium in a way that affects neuronal activity," said Nedergaard. "It's a simple, yet powerful mechanism for astrocytes to rapidly modulate neuronal activity."

Nedergaard has investigated the secret lives of astrocytes for more than two decades. She has shown how the cells communicate using calcium to signal. Nearly 20 years ago in a paper in Science, she pioneered the idea that glial cells like astrocytes communicate with neurons and affect them. Since then, has been a lot of speculation by other scientists that chemicals call gliotransmitters, such as glutamate and ATP, are key to this process.

In contrast, in the latest research Nedergaard's team found that another signaling system involving potassium is at work. By sucking up potassium, astrocytes quell the firing of neurons, increasing what scientists call "synaptic fidelity." Important brain signals are crisper and clearer because there is less unwanted activity or "chatter" among neurons that should not be firing. Such errant neuronal activity is linked to a plethora of disorders, including epilepsy, schizophrenia, and attention-deficit disorder.

"This gives us a new target for a disease like epilepsy, where signaling among brain cells is not as controlled as it should be," said Nedergaard, whose team is based in the Division of Glia Disease and Therapeutics of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine of the Department of Neurosurgery.

The first authors of the paper are Fushun Wang, Ph.D., research assistant professor of Neurosurgery; and graduate student Nathan Anthony Smith. They did much of the work by using a sophisticated laser-based system to monitor the activity of astrocytes in the living brain of rats and mice. The work by Smith, a graduate student in the University's neuroscience program, was supported by a Kirschstein National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).

Other authors from Rochester include Takumi Fujita, Ph.D., post-doctoral associate; Takahiro Takano, Ph.D., assistant professor; Qiwu Xu, technical associate; and Lane Bekar, Ph.D., formerly research assistant professor, now at the University of Saskatchewan. Also contributing were Akemichi Baba of Hyogo University of Health Sciences in Japan, and Toshio Matsuda of Osaka University in Japan.

Nedergaard notes that the complexity and size of our astrocytes is one of few characteristics that differentiate our brains from rodents. Our astrocytes are bigger, faster, and much more complex in both structure and function. She has found that astrocytes contribute to conditions like stroke, Alzheimer's, epilepsy, and spinal cord injury.

"Astrocytes are integral to the most sophisticated brain processes," she added.

The latest paper caps a remarkable run for the Nedergaard group. In two months the team has published a paper on adenosine in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a paper on spinal cord injury in the Journal of Neuroscience, and two papers in Science Signaling on communication between neurons and astrocytes.

Evolve, Damn It! ? Caught in the Cogs

The most conscious, most loving, and most honest relationships don?t end, they evolve.

EVOLUTION:?A gradual process in which something changes into a different and usually more complex or better form.

Emphasis on the word gradual.

As far as I?m concerned, this is by far the best way for a loving relationship to end because, well, it doesn?t. It evolves.?Gradually?over time, a relationship may evolve from a loving and passionate, sexual relationship to a loving, deep life-long friendship.

The love doesn?t die, it evolves.

If this relationship is an open one, that is a type of non-monagamous relationship like a polyamorous one, other people may come into your or your beloved?s life, bringing new passion and love along with them to the benefit and enrichment of all concerned. When they do, they do so and deepen the love and connection between your and your beloved. Loving together, you love others. Loving together, you love more. It?s not about finding something better. It?s about opening your heart to more love, different experiences.

Unfortunately, this happens all too rarely. I?ve had it happen once in my life, with my ex-fiance in a monogamous relationship, but even that ended more than could have. It was not as painful, though, because it ended with love and respect after some evolution had taken place. Afterward, we stayed in touch, and we?re still friends nearly 20 years later.

In true polyamorous relationships, where all parties are open, honest, take responsibility for themselves and their actions, actively pursue their own self-awareness and self-growth, and aren?t afraid to examine their own insecurities and fears as well as be present and in a place of support while their partner examines and works through their own, relationships will have the presence and compassion and support to evolve.

Allow me to define what I mean by ?true polyamorous relationships.?

Polyamory, as I?ve discussed at length in previous posts, has no hard and fast rules. Each polyamorous or non-monogamous relationship truly must make their own rules and agree upon definitions to words (like jealousy, serious, relationship, sex, etc.) that work for the couple in question. That goes for the details of specific polyamorous relationships. All relationship structures depend on honesty and openness for real intimacy & success, but Polyamory, as opposed to other forms of non-monogamy like swinging or just the nondescript ?open? relationship, relies on a heavy level of commitment. ?Commitment to honesty, to sexual safety, to facing one?s own insecurities, to making difficult sacrifices when necessary, to the difficulty of standing up for oneself when necessary, and a willingness to be with a partner through some very strong emotions.? (Source)

Unfortunately for those of us who are looking for a real relationship in polyamorous circles, those who have an innate fear of commitment and intimacy have a tendency to think that their lack of responsibility and inability to commit makes them ?polyamorous.?

It doesn?t.

It makes them dangerous to the hearts and souls of loving, giving, honest people.

Too often, I?ve learned, that players consider themselves ?polyamorous,? thinking they can have lots of NSA sex. Commitmentphobes consider themselves polyamorous, thinking that if they just date married women they never have to take responsibility for their own actions, for the heart of their partner, and avoid ?drama? and hurt feelings, because, well, that?s what their husband?s are there for.

Um. No.

Next week, I?m going to explore commitmentphobia in another post, but let me just say this: it is a psychological illness, like any other phobia. If you find yourself in love with a commitmentphobe, they must acknowledge the issue and?commit to working on it, usually with the help of a therapist. If they do that, then with some patience, understanding, and a lot of love, you can make a relationship work. However, if they are content with just going from breaking one heart to breaking the next, then get out and get away for your own safety.

I have absolutely no respect for players, on the other hand. These are wo/men who knowingly and consciously ?play? their partners, making them believe there is really intimacy and connection when it?s just part of their manipulative game.

There is nothing fun about hurting people.

As I?ve said before, and I?m obviously much better at saying it than doing it, trust takes time to build.

Words + Supporting Action + Reliability Over Time = TRUST.

I had a counselor once tell me that it takes at least three months for a person to show their true colors, sometimes longer.

Last week, I came across a wonderful blog on Getting Past Your Breakup. Among the several great articles therein, one called ?Benefit of the Doubt? caught my eye. It?s an excellent post. Please read that and others on that blog if you are going through a breakup. Some very helpful information there. This entire blog is in support of the book by the same name. Great book, too. Go buy it.

Hmmmm. A book on surviving a broken heart. I?m an author. I?ve certainly have experience doing it?

Maybe so! ;-)

I totally digressed away from the topic at hand! Imagine that!

So, in your relationship(s), examine yourself often. Be honest with yourself and then be honest with your significant other. Openly discuss your fears and hopes and dreams. Openly discuss your insecurities and love and desires. Openly discuss everything. Have fun. Go out and play. Stay in and play.

When doubts or questions come up, discuss them with your partner. Don?t vacillate in your own head for days or weeks or months or (god forbid) years on a decision without sharing these thoughts with your partner. You are PARTNERS in this. You?ve chosen to share your lives together, no matter how long you?ve been together. Give them the respect of being part of the decision-making process. Don?t let a change come out of nowhere in their eyes because you didn?t have the courage or respect to discuss it with them.

Allow your love to grow and evolve into whatever it will become. As long as you?re coming from a place of love and understanding and compassion, hurt feelings and misunderstandings, part of?any relationship, will be minimized. As you move along in love together, you will learn how to best manage these and other types of pain and fears together.

You are a team. Love deeply together.

Namaste.

A sudden increase in narcolepsy in Finnish children at the beginning of 2010 was likely related to the Pandemrix vaccine used in response to the H1N1 2009 flu pandemic, according to two reports published Mar. 28 in the open access journal PLoS ONE.

The authors of the studies, led by Markku Partinen of the Helsinki Sleep Clinic and Hanna Nohynek of the National Institute for Health and Welfare in Finland, found that the average annual incidence of narcolepsy between 2002 and 2009 among children younger than 17 was 0.31 per 100,000, and in 2010, this incidence was about 17 times higher, at 5.3 cases per 100,000. In contrast, the incidence rate for adults over 20 was essentially unchanged over that same time period.

To further evaluate the potential connection between the vaccine and narcolepsy, the researchers collected vaccination and childhood narcolepsy data for children born between January 1991 and December 2005.

They found that the narcolepsy incidence for vaccinated individuals within this age group was 9.0 per 100,000 people, as compared to just 0.7 per 100,000 for unvaccinated individuals almost 13 times lower.

Together, these results provide compelling evidence that the Pandemrix vaccine, used in 2009 and 2010 in association with the H1N1 flu pandemic, contributed to narcolepsy in patients between the age of 4 and 19 in Finland, the authors conclude.

NJIT mathematician publishes 2012 Major League Baseball projections

NJIT mathematician publishes 2012 Major League Baseball projections [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 28-Mar-2012

The Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals and Arizona Diamondbacks should win their divisions, while the Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds will make it to Major League Baseball's post-season as wild card teams in the National League (NL) in 2012, according to NJIT's baseball guru Bruce Bukiet. The San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee Brewers and Florida Marlins could be close on the heels of the Reds and Braves but should miss out on the post-season by 3 or 4 wins. For more than a decade, Bukiet, an associate professor and associate dean, has applied mathematical analysis to compute the number of regular season games each Major League Baseball team should win. Though his expertise is in mathematical modeling, rather than baseball, his projections have compared well with those of so-called experts over the years.

This year, he says that in the American League (AL), the New York Yankees, the Detroit Tigers and the Texas Rangers should repeat as division champions, while the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels should be the wild card teams. "In the AL, the competition for the wild card shouldn't even be close," Bukiet says. "The next best team, the Tampa Bay Rays, should win 9 less games than the 93 games both the Red Sox and Angels should win," he adds.

Bukiet makes these projections to demonstrate and promote the power of math. He wants to show young people that math can be fun, that it can be applied to improve one's understanding of many aspects of life and that if you love mathematics, it can be a great college major and lead to a satisfying career.

Bukiet bases his predictions on a mathematical model he developed in 2000. He has made various revisions over the years. His results have led to back-to-back wins as predictions champ at baseballphd.net in 2010 and 2011. More results concerning his baseball modeling can be found at http://m.njit.edu/~bukiet/baseball/baseball.html and at www.egrandslam.com.

In the NL East, the race for first place should be tight with the Phillies repeating as division champions, winning 92 games and the Braves just two games behind at 90, with both teams making the playoffs. (The model predicted the exact same number of wins for these teams in 2011, but the Braves won just 89 games and missed the playoffs by a single game.) In the Central Division, the St. Louis Cardinals should win 92 games, the most in the National League, while the Reds should win 87 and be the NL team that makes the playoff under the new system in 2012 in which 5 teams in each League go on to the post-season. In the West, the Arizona Diamondbacks should repeat as champions with 88 wins.

The New York Yankees (of the AL East) and Texas Rangers (of the AL West) should tie for the best record in baseball with 97 wins. They should each be 4 games better than the second-place Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels, respectively.

Bukiet should have plenty of time this summer to spend doing math since his favorite team, the New York Mets, should come in last place in their division, the NL East, winning just 72 games. His only consolation is that there should be 7 teams with even worse records, with the Minnesota Twins earning the least wins of any team (64). And once again, for the 20th year in a row, the Pittsburgh Pirates should finish with a losing record. Their 68 wins are well below the 81 wins needed to break their famous streak.

Bukiet expects the AL win totals at season's end to be as follows:
AL East: Yankees 97; Red Sox 93; Rays 84; Blue Jays 80; Orioles 67.
AL Central: Tigers 96; White Sox 82; Indians - 78; Royals 70; Twins 64.
AL West: Rangers 97; Angels 93; Mariners 70; Athletics 68.

For the NL, he projects each team having the following number of wins:
NL East: Phillies 92; Braves 90; Marlins 83; Nationals 75; Mets 72.
NL Central: Cards 94; Reds 87; Brewers 83; Cubs 70; Pirates 68; Astros 66.
NL West: Diamondbacks 88; Giants 84; Dodgers 81; Rockies 80; Padres 78.

Louisiana primary keeps Santorum?s hopes alive as Gingrich, Paul fade

Rick Santorum led front-runner Mitt Romney by a wide margin in Louisiana?s primary election. But the results did little to close the delegate gap, and upcoming primaries favor Romney.

The Louisiana primary was a boost for Rick Santorum?s presidential hopes. But while Santorum led front-runner Mitt Romney by a wide margin in Louisiana?s popular vote Saturday (49-27 percent), the results did little to close the delegate gap between the two.

Meanwhile, between now and early May the GOP primary schedule ? northern states with large urban populations ? favors Romney, who already has major advantages in campaign funds and organization.

"I think the primary's over," Senator Lindsey Graham (R) of South Carolina said on CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday. "Romney will be the nominee."

Santorum notched a mere five-delegate advantage over Romney in Louisiana. But the former Massachusetts governor has accumulated twice as many delegates as Santorum ? 568 to 273.

Romney still needs to get to 1,144 to win the nomination. But as the two leading candidates fight their way through the election calendar, it becomes tougher and tougher for Santorum to catch up. He failed to win a spot on the ballot in the District of Columbia, which holds its primary in nine days.

RECOMMENDED:?Mitt Romney: top 5 attacks on President Obama

In Wisconsin, the most delegate-rich state holding the next round of primaries on April 3, Romney and his independent super PAC have plowed more than $2 million into TV advertising. A crush of advertising ? mostly negative ? eroded?Santorum's?strength in states such as Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois as he simply couldn't keep pace.

"This race has clearly gotten down to two candidates that can win the nomination,"?Santorum?told reporters in Milwaukee Saturday. "I'd love to have a one-on-one debate.?

Romney's team, increasingly confident, dismissed the idea ? and with good reason.

Santorum had led in some Wisconsin polls, but momentum there is shifting to Romney, favored 46-33 in a Rasmussen Reports survey out Friday. (Gingrich and Paul remain in single digits in Wisconsin, according to Rasmussen.)

"There is a growing perception that Romney is going to be the nominee [84 percent] and there is a growing perception that he is the strongest candidate against Barack Obama [59 percent],? Scott Rasmussen told the (Milwaukee) Journal Sentinel. ?Those things are moving the Republican nomination into its end phase.?

Legal Schnauzer: "Fully Loaded" Activities at The Grove Apartments ...

Campus Crest Communities CEO Ted Rollins has an MBA from Duke University, so it stands to reason that he knows a thing or two about business. But Rollins must have skipped classes for the marketing component in Duke's MBA program. How else can you explain Rollins' approval of the slogan "fully loaded" for the student-housing complexes his company builds under The Grove banner?

Was no one at the company capable of looking ahead and seeing that an unfortunate event likely was to happen at one of their facilities, bringing a dark and ironic twist to the term "fully loaded." Such an event happened recently?when 23-year-old Shardae Wright was shot to death in her apartment at The Grove in Clarksville, Tennessee, near Austin Peay State University. Nicholas Rico Durant, Wright's boyfriend, has been arrested and charged with murder.

This was not the first time "fully loaded" has taken on a dark meaning in relation to a Grove site--and it surely will not be the last. Does the company plan to continue with that marketing campaign? We put that question to Ted Rollins in the wake of Shardae Wright's shooting death, but he has not responded to our message.

Rollins has been the subject of numerous posts at Legal Schnauzer because of Rollins v. Rollins, a divorce action he initiated in Alabama that left his ex wife and two daughters on food stamps here in Birmingham. For good measure, Rollins has a $26.3-million Grove project planned at Auburn University. Once completed, that complex should liven things up at the "Loveliest Village on the Plains."

It's been almost two years since Sherry Carroll Rollins contacted me and began to talk about an ex husband who belonged to one of the nation's wealthiest families, who managed to sue her for divorce in Alabama even though she sued him first in South Carolina (where they lived), and who was launching a company to build apartment complexes near college campuses around the country.

When news broke that the company had completed a $382-million Wall Street IPO in late 2010, it was obvious this was to be a major venture, run by serious business people. So I was stunned to discover that Campus Crest Communities planned to market itself as a provider of "fully loaded" living for college students.

Anyone paying the slightest attention to American culture knows we are awash in guns and alcohol--and both tend to be available to college students. Even the most unhip folks among us know the term "loaded" has unfortunate connotations when applied to firearms and booze. You did not have to be a visionary to see that the term "fully loaded" was going to come back to bite Campus Crest Communities on its marketing fanny.

In fact, the biting started long before the shooting death in Clarksville, Tennessee. In November 2009, a man was charged with felony reckless endangerment and public intoxication after firing a gun into a woman's apartment at The Grove in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, near Middle Tennessee State University. Suspect Angelo Demetrius Leach apparently was "fully loaded" in at least two senses of the term.

In July 2011, a woman had her 2005 Nissan Altima carjacked at The Grove in Mobile, on the campus of the University of South Alabama. In that case, the assailant wielded a knife, so it's not certain he qualified as "fully loaded."

These are serious matters, and we don't mean to make light of situations where young people have found themselves in danger. That's why we put some serious questions to Ted Rollins following the homicide at Austin Peay. The CEO has stated to us several times that he would be "more than happy" to respond to written questions, and we have submitted questions via e-mail on more than a dozen occasions. He has yet to respond to any of them.

Here are the questions we asked after the shooting death of Shardae Wright:

Ted:

I understand that a resident was murdered Friday evening at The Grove apartment complex near Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN.

I am developing a post about the homicide for tomorrow morning (3/7), so I wanted to give you an opportunity to comment by responding to the following questions:

* What does this incident say about security at The Grove complexes?

* What does this say about safety of students who live at The Grove, coming close on the heels of a balcony collapse at your complex near North Texas State?

* Are you concerned about your marketing theme--fully loaded living--in light of a shooting death at one of your properties?

* I wrote just this morning about allegations that you committed perjury in the Rollins v. Rollins divorce case in Alabama, and you did not respond to questions in advance of that post. What does your own apparent disrespect for the law say about the lawlessness that now seems to be permeating your apartment complexes around the country?

This is a time-sensitive story, so I would appreciate a prompt response.

Does Ted Rollins' failure to respond indicate that he simply does not care that a young woman lost her life at one of his properties? Does it mean he does not have good answers to questions about safety and security for residents at The Grove? Does it mean he doesn't know what to do about a marketing campaign gone awry?

I could see how a reasonable person might answer yes to all of those questions.

MMO-Champion - Scarlet Monastery Preview, New Warlock Pets ...

Warlock (Forums)
Warlocks and Green Fire
Green "fel" fire for warlocks, like they've been asking for since... forever?

It is our hope to introduce a quest which will allow warlocks to unlock the use of green fire. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Moonkin Form Model Update
I think they deserve a revamp, though, same as cats and bears got.
Well, we agree. And this is why an improved moonkin model is indeed in the schedule. But alas I have no due date to announce. In the meantime, we hope the various new cool shape-shift glyphs will provide a little distraction while the moonkin model gets the loving it needs. We hope the Glyph of Stars will help you here. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Scarlet Monastery and Scholomance
Wouldn't it instead be more logical to do something about dungeons people NOT love so much? Why try fixing things which already are working fine and people already love?
That's a fair point. But just because we're revamping the big player favourites, doesn't mean that we won't be looking around and seeing what else we might want to revamp.

So, what's this about Lillian Voss as a boss fight in Scholomance, eh? In Mists of Pandaria, we finally catch up with Lillian Voss. For those who didn't play through the Forsaken starting experience, Lillian Voss was brought back to life by Sylvanas, but despite this she refused to become part of the Forsaken.

After trying to re-connect with her still living father, those players with keen eyes might have noticed her handiwork in Western Plaguelands. As a non-aligned "free agent," Lillian has some surprising hidden talents. In Mists of Pandaria she's still confused about her situation. Still broiling with internal conflict, despising what she has become.

Now she has a new and grander mission in mind and it revolves around Scholomance and Darkmaster Gandling in particular. She wants to ensure that like herself, no others shall be raised from death and subjugated. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

Mists of Pandaria Graphical Upgrades
There are actually quite a lot of graphic engine improvements in Mists of Pandaria, however for the most part they are subtle. For example, improved shadowing, blending and enhancements to the fog effect.

Amongst the large list of information we hope to share with you is included a list of the new graphic engine improvements with some before and after screenshots to highlight what each one brings to the game.

Each one might be subtle but as a whole they bring an improved visual appearance to the game. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

The Zandalari in Mists of Pandaira
Thousands of years ago, when the Zandalari and the Mogu boasted the most powerful empires in Azeroth, the Zandalari were actually allied with the Mogu. So when the Pandaren revolted against the Mogu, of course the Zandalari displayed their allegiance to their Mogu friends by attacking the embryonic Pandaren empire. Overcoming this threat was to be one of the Pandaren empire's first tests of strength.

After the passing of so many thousands of years, after the mists had covered Pandaria for so long ? keeping ancient threats like the Zandalari at bay ? Pandaren children have now come to see the mythological Zandalari somewhat like our children see bogeymen. Scary enough to ensure compliance with the instructions and requests of parents, but at the end of the day, not the kind of threat you ever really see with your own eyes and in your own backyard... right?

The misty shrouds that the last Pandaren Emperor used to protect Pandaria from the demonic jeopardy that threatened Azeroth have done a particularly good job, for no troll has been seen in Pandaria for over 10,000 years. No wonder the Zandalari seem like nothing more than freakish figures of fiction to many Pandaren.

Imagine the Pandaren's surprise when the mists collapse and Pandaria's lush forests and cloud-ringed mountains are once more threatened by the ancient Zandalari menace that they had come to see as nothing more than scary savages in some superstitious stories. After the mists collapse, of course after 10,000 years the Zandalari are intensely curious about Pandaria, even more so perhaps than the Horde and Alliance are. But is there more to their interest than pure curiosity?

So, just like the Alliance and Horde, they send out their forces to Pandaria. But it would appear they have it in mind to re-connect with their ancient allies, the Mogu. It seems they want to help them retake the land away from the Pandaren and once again bring it under Mogu rule. How very kind of them!

But is their mission to re-establish Mogu rule really so altruistic as that? They seem so desperate to acquire Pandaren territory. What exactly could be their motive, if it isn't just to help out their ancient Mogu allies?

To find out more, we will need to wait a little while longer so we can head towards Kun-Lai Summit and unravel the secrets that are there to be discovered. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

LFR -loot system
We're working on getting a new Coffee with the Devs (aka Dev Watercooler) out, which will explain the new system in a very clear and precise way.

I don't want to post everything that'll be explained in that article, however essentially for Raid Finder it's currently intended to be like this: the boss will die, the game decides who wins loot. There'll be no rolling or passing. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

How Exactly Do We "Demand" Item Squish?
The way you ?demand? an item squish is by testing, talking and sharing your constructive feedback with us here. We realize that there are players on both sides of the fence on this issue and we want to be able to evaluate the comfort level for moving forward with the possibility before we actually do anything more (should we feel it?s necessary.) Essentially, we want players to start expecting it rather than fearing it. While we stand 100% behind the new talent changes, we also recognize that they may be a bit controversial. We thought it would make sense to first have everyone try out the new talent model for the expansion before we tried doing any item squishes. We don?t want a returning player to not only have to relearn their class because of these big talent changes, but also to have to get used to doing lower damage. That?s a lot of change to take in at once. As we mentioned, we had the squish all in and working, but seeing those small numbers felt odd to us ? and we knew exactly what to expect. For a player not knowing what to expect, it might feel downright alien and not very ? WoW like? which is not a good experience with which to welcome a player to a new expansion. We know that veterans are ready and willing to take on whatever gets thrown their way, but for others, we don?t want to completely overwhelm them if we can avoid it.

As we said in the original blog, we don?t want anyone to reject the idea of an item squish solely because they enjoy soloing old content. There are other solutions to that problem, if in fact it becomes a problem.

The primary motivation behind an item squish is to make the numbers more readable for players. It would have almost no balance implications. There are however some programming implications. It?s easy to get bogged down into technical details quickly, but many of the numbers in WoW have a cap of two billion. There are cases where we already have gotten close to that cap, with which many of you are probably already familiar. We already had to do some work in Cataclysm to increase the gold cap (because gold is stored in the game as copper). We have already had some bosses, such as Flame Leviathan, with health of over one billion. We have already had fights in the game where players could hit the threat cap. All of these problems have solutions, but they aren?t free solutions, and focusing programmer time on fixing them means less time for other features. We think we will be fine for Mists of Pandaria, but we are going to have to consider those solutions soon after. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)

'Hangover Part III' Due Next Summer

Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis are all onboard for the final film.

Nothing beats a classic movie trilogy. And while nobody is rushing to compare "The Hangover" to "Star Wars," director/producer Todd Phillips is aiming to end the hugely successful morning-after comedy franchise with a third and final chapter next summer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Phillips confirmed on Thursday that "The Hangover Part III" will indeed wrap up the series when it's released next summer.

"We're going to surprise a lot of people with the final chapter we have planned," Phillips said. "It will be a fitting conclusion to our three-part opera of mayhem, despair and bad decisions." The movie is slated to hit theaters on May 24, 2013, hoping to capture some of the same box-office magic that the second installment grabbed when it launched on that same weekend in 2011 on its way to a massive $581.5 worldwide gross.

Additional good news came with the confirmation that after extensive negotiations, stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis are all onboard for the third go-round. To date, the first two movies have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, a rarity for an R-rated comedy franchise. It was such an unexpected smash, in fact, that the Reporter noted that Warner Bros. studio didn't even sign the stars to option deals for sequels because no one expected the original 2009 film to gross more than $467 million. That resulted in the "wolfpack" trio getting "hefty" raises for the second film and a reported $15 million each for the third movie.

Phillips will again work on the script with "Part II" co-writer Craig Mazin, but he would not tip his hand as to where the third movie will take place. The magazine reported that a recent draft of the script indicated that it was set in Los Angeles and that it deviated from the "what happened to us last night?" formula of the first two films.

Cooper recently lent credence to the script speculation
when he revealed in a December interview, "We adhered to the formula in the second one, for those of you who've seen it, and the third one, which would close the whole sort of trilogy, which now it would be a trilogy — even though we thought we would never make a second one, let alone anybody see the first one — I think it will take place in Los Angeles and maybe not adhere to the structure. It might be different."
