Alzheimer's disease in mice alleviated: Promising therapeutic approach for humans

ScienceDaily (Nov. 25, 2012) ? Pathological changes typical of Alzheimer's disease were significantly reduced in mice by blockade of an immune system transmitter. A research team from Charit? -- Universit?tsmedizin Berlin and the University of Zurich has just published a new therapeutic approach in fighting Alzheimer's disease in the current issue of Nature Medicine. This approach promises potential in prevention, as well as in cases where the disease has already set in.

Alzheimer's disease is one of the most common causes of dementia. In Germany and Switzerland alone, around 1.5 million people are affected, and forecasts predict a doubling of the number of patients worldwide within the next 20 years. The accumulation of particular abnormal proteins, including amyloid-? (A?) among others, in patients' brains plays a central role in this disease. Prof. Frank Heppner from the Department of Neuropathology at Charit? and his colleague Prof. Burkhard Becher from the Institute for Experimental Immunology at the University of Zurich were able to show that turning off particular cytokines (immune system signal transmitters) reduced the Alzheimer's typical amyloid-? deposits in mice with the disease. As a result, the strongest effects were demonstrated after reducing amyloid-? by approximately 65 percent, when the immune molecule p40 was affected, which is a component of the cytokines interleukin (IL)-12 and -23.

Relevant for human therapy

Follow-up experiments also relevant for humans showed that substantial improvements in behavioral testing resulted when mice were given the antibody blocking the immune molecule p40. This effect was also achieved when the mice were already showing symptoms of the disease. Based on the current study by Prof. Heppner's and Prof. Becher's team, the level of p40 molecules is higher in Alzheimer's patients' brain fluid, which is in agreement with a recently published study by American colleagues demonstrating increased p40 levels in blood plasma of subjects with Alzheimer's disease, thus showing obvious relevance for human therapy.

The significance of the immune system in Alzheimer's research is the focus of current efforts. Prof. Heppner and Prof. Becher suspect that cytokines IL-12 and IL-23 themselves are not causative in the pathology, and that the mechanism of the immune molecule p40 in Alzheimer's requires additional clarification. However, they are convinced that the results of their six-years of research work justify the step toward clinical studies in humans, for which they plan to collaborate with a suitable industrial partner.

IIn the context of other illnesses, such as psoriasis, a medication that suppresses p40 in humans has already been applied. "Based on the safety data in patients," comment Profs. Heppner and Becher, "clinical studies could now be implemented without delay. Now, the goal is to bring the new therapeutic approach to Alzheimer patients quickly."

Black Friday Gives Way To Small Business Saturday

small business saturday 2012 Black Friday Gives Way To Small Business Saturday

Everyone knows about Black Friday and Cyber Monday. ?It?s covered to death by the media, analyzed relentlessly by Wall Street, and now rivals Thanksgiving Thursday for displays of excess, gluttony, and questionable individual behavior.

Myself, having worked retail from 1994 to 2008 (and now behind the?scenes), I?m much more interested in what I call ?Green Saturday?, the last Saturday before Christmas, when everyone rushes to get their shopping done. ?Ah? the days of having twenty registers ringing nonstop, as the store manager served as the line nazi manager, and I kept the mood light at the end of the line! ?Good times?

But while the big retailers advertise door busters and compete to see who can open the earliest on Thursday, there are a lot of smaller retailers who get overlooked. ?Thus, American Express created Small Business Saturday?in 2010?to help their small business account holders better promote their brick-and-mortar stores, offering free resources for businesses. ?Last year, over 100 million shopped during the day, and many businesses use the?#SmallBusinessSaturday hashtag to promote their stores year-round.

kent general store 300x268 Black Friday Gives Way To Small Business SaturdayIt?s no surprise that most comics shops are small businesses, usually a mom-and-pop operation of just one or two stores. ?Like small businesses everywhere, these owners work long hours, usually with small margins of profit, while offering outstanding customer service and creating vibrant community centers for customers!

Comics fans ourselves, we know we don?t have to encourage our readers to visit a comics shop (you probably do that every Wednesday)! ?We probably don?t have to encourage you to spend $50 in a comics shop (I used to budget $100 a week for comics)! ?But too often we overlook that which we take for granted.

If you?re out tomorrow shopping, stop by one of the smaller stores in your local mall or in a strip mall to do some shopping. ?You?ll probably find something interesting which would would be either overlooked or understocked at the local behemoth retailer. ?You?ll also find expert staff willing to recommend solutions to satisfy your most difficult loved ones with amazing customer service!

It also wouldn?t hurt to let your loved ones know that you would love a gift certificate from your local comics shop, or to even hand them a list of titles you?d love to receive! ?(Yeah, hope springs eternal?)

Myself, I?m doing my second annual Grand Tour of Omaha?s comics shops tomorrow, where I?ll try to chat with each owner while I shop, or at least the store manager. ?I?m lucky? both in Omaha and New York, there are an amazing number of great comics shops. ?If you?re lucky enough to live near such a store, let the owner know how thankful you are, and spread the word. ?Word of Mouth advertising is the most effective advertising available, and the cheapest. ?Tweet, post, blog your favorites!

Excerpts from persistent Wis. protesters' songbook

A group of about 50 Wisconsin demonstrators has been singing protest songs inside the Madison Capitol every day at noon for almost two years. Their target is Republican Gov. Scott Walker, who pushed a law stripping public employees of certain labor rights. The demonstrators have a songbook of 44 songs, many of them traditional songs that have had the lyrics changed to target Walker.

Here are excerpts from a sampling of songs:

? "We Shall Overcome" ? "We shall overcome, we shall overcome, we shall overcome some day. ... Oh, deep in my heart I do believe Walker won't be governor some day."

? "This Land is Your Land" ? "This house is your house, this house is my house, from the rotunda to the governor's office. Scott Walker will never push us out. This house was made for you and me."

? "When We Make Peace," sung to the tune of "When the Saints Go Marching In" ? "When there's respect, for workers' rights, when there's respect for workers' rights, oh I want to be in that number, when there's respect for workers' rights."

? "It Isn't Nice" ? "We have tried negotiations, and crossin' the state line. Somehow Walker didn't see us ? you know, he might as well be blind. Now our new ways aren't nice, when we deal with men of ice, but if that is freedom's price, we don't mind."

? "Pass the Cheddar," sung to the tune of "Jambalaya" ? "Goodbye Scott, you gotta go, me oh my oh, you're as harmful as your buddy in Ohio. To prevent you from further destruction, we will protest all over Wisconsin."

? "Oh, Scott Walker," sung to the tune of "Oh, Susanna" ? "Oh, Scott Walker, now don't you mess with me. I come from all Wisconsin with a sign for you to see. Well, it snowed all day that Saturday, the people didn't care. Their cause so hot it kept them warm, and thousands filled the square. Now I come from all Wisconsin with my ballot in my hand, and I say to you Republicans I'm gonna take a stand."

? "Scotty, We're Comin' for You" ? "I never knew how much I loved Wisconsin, 'till I stood in the Capitol dome. Signs on the walls and drums in the halls, cries of "Freedom!" ringing out all night long. All of us standing together, teachers in red, cops in blue. Hundreds of thousands show people have power. So tell me what are we gonna do? Scotty, we're coming for you!"

Holiday shoppers descend on Black Friday deals

Black Friday got off to its earliest start ever as many shoppers cleared the table of Thanksgiving dinner and headed straight to the malls and big-box retailers across the nation to snag goods at bargain prices.

More than 10,000 people were wrapped around Macy's flagship store in New York City before the doors opened at midnight this morning. Across the country, up to 147 million people are expected to shop at some point this weekend.

Thousands lined up outside a Target in Chicago ahead of a 9 p.m. start time.

"I'm here because my mom is making me, because she said I couldn't eat any of the Thanksgiving food if I didn't hold her place in line," Alex Horton told ABC News station WLS-TV in Chicago Thursday.

Many critics panned the early start this year, saying it cuts into quality time that should be spent with family and friends.

PHOTOS: Black Friday Shoppers Hit Stores

Chicago resident Claudia Fonseca got creative and took Thanksgiving to go.

"We brought a plate, but that's about it, we've been here since 11 a.m. And that's it," Fonseca told WLS Thursday.

Black Friday makes headlines every year, but not always for the right reason as violence has become linked to the day after Thanksgiving tradition.

In Los Angeles, police aren't taking any chances with the LAPD deploying dozens of extra officers around the city to make sure things don't get out of hand.

Ontario Mills shopping mall in Los Angeles opened at midnight last year, but decided to give excited shoppers a two-hour head start to get their hands on the cut-rate deals, especially for electronics.

"This is my first year," Gabriela Mendoza told ABC News station KABC-TV Thursday. "I tried to stay away from this but I've heard it's really exciting so, I'm looking forward to it."

Things have been relatively calmer compared to the incident last year when a woman was accused of unleashing pepper spray on other shoppers in a dash for electronics at Walmart in Los Angeles.

The Black Friday madness kicked off Thursday when a south Sacramento, Calif., Kmart opened its doors at 6 a.m. Thursday. A shopper in a line of people that had formed nearly two hours earlier reportedly threatened to stab the people around him.

At two Kmarts in Indianapolis, police officers were called in after fights broke out among shoppers trying to score vouchers for a 32-inch plasma TV going for less than $200, police told ABC News affiliate RTV6. No injuries or arrest were made.

Stores have taken preventive measures in hopes of shoppers and tempers at ease, where safety is the main concern for everyone involved.

Mall of America has tightened its Black Friday policies and will bar unaccompanied minors from the megamall all day today. After a chair-throwing melee last year after Christmas, which was captured on smartphones and posted online, the mall is taking steps to prevent any repeat.

At the Arden Fair Mall in Sacramento, Calif., security planned to place barricades at the mall entrance to control the crowds and officials planned to double the number of security officers.

ABC News' John Schriffen and Sarah Netter contributed to this report.

Football: CU Buffs fall at home to Washington Huskies

Forget about winning a home game. The Colorado football team has enough trouble just trying to score points in Folsom Field these days.

The Buffaloes' stuck in the mud offense flopped once again and this time it came in a very winnable game against a Washington team that seemed to struggle almost as badly at times. The Huskies handed the Buffs their seventh consecutive loss 38-3 in front of perhaps the smallest crowd to see a game in Boulder in three decades.

CU announced it had sold approximately 45,000 tickets before the game but there appeared to be no more than 30,000 fans in the stadium, and that might be generous.

"That's something we need to get right," tight end Nick Kasa said. "If you don't win games, people

CU QB Jordan Webb is sacked by Travis Feeney of Washington in the second half. ( CLIFF GRASSMICK )

don't want to come see you. We have to win some games."

Who could blame CU fans for not showing up when the offense has scored three points at home in the past 10 quarters played here and the defense has been one of the worst in the nation most of the season?

The loss was the 10th of the season for CU. It is just the fifth time in the program's history the Buffs have suffered double-digit losses in a single season.

The fourth time was last year when CU was 3-10.

"Losing hurts," defensive lineman Chidera Uzo-Diribe said. "I don't think there is a guy in the locker room who isn't hurting. We just have to work hard to try to send our seniors out the right way."

The Buffs must beat Utah at home next week in the season finale to avoid becoming the first CU team in history to go winless during an entire season at Folsom Field.

CU definitely hasn't had the look of a team with any belief in itself for weeks now and it doesn't go unnoticed by opponents.

"They looked dead," Washington safety Justin Glenn said of the Buffs. "Cody (Bruns) and I were talking about that because we've been there. I think back to our freshman year (0-12), and you just don't have hope. Coming into the game, it's just not the same. It feels great to be on the opposite end of that."

CU coach Jon Embree said he believes his team has showed a sense of urgency all season.

"You can't say that this team has not played with urgency," Embree said. "We just have not executed or played both sides of the football."

Colorado's defense played considerably better than it had last week when it was run over at Arizona. It kept the team in the game but couldn't overcome turnovers by the offense and special teams that gave Washington prime field position on multiple occasions.

The Buffs held an opponent scoreless in the first quarter for the first time since last season's finale at Utah and nearly shut out the Huskies through the first half. But Washington quarterback Keith Price was able to lead a late first-half scoring drive culminating in Bruns' first career touchdown catch that gave the Huskies a 7-0 lead at the intermission.

Price completed 22 of 29 passes for 248 yards and five touchdowns. Price tied the school record for touchdown passes.

Sophomore Connor Wood started at quarterback for the first time in his career but made two poor decisions that led to interceptions and he was replaced by junior Jordan Webb before halftime. Webb couldn't do much better.

The Buffs produced 141 yards of total offense. They have now generated 217 yards of total offense in the past two home games combined.

Colorado's running game was unable to take advantage of a Washington defense ranked 90th in the nation against the run.

The Buffs were so bad offensively, they didn't seem to know the correct down and distance at one point. Midway through the second quarter, Webb ran a quarterback sneak on first-and-10 as if it was fourth-and-1.

Webb and Embree explained later that the officials initially failed to rule the Buffs had made a first down on the preceding play, but the chains had been moved by the time the Buffs came to the line of scrimmage.

The game got away from the Buffs again in the third quarter, keeping alive a streak of anticlimactic fourth quarters played with fans streaming up the aisles at Folsom and the sound of bands echoing through the empty seats.

The Buffs handed the Huskies points early in the third quarter. CU wide receiver Nelson Spruce was hit by a bouncing punt that Washington's Kevin Smith grabbed as he was going out of bounds and flipped up in the air. Washington safety Will Shamburger recovered.

The Huskies scored three plays later when Price hit Kasen Williams with a 17-yard touchdown pass.

CU left tackle David Bakhtiari was beaten by Washington's Josh Shirley on third down on the Buffs next possession. Shirley sacked Webb and forced a fumble in the process. Washington recovered and the Huskies scored two plays later when Price hit Kendyl Taylor with a 23-yard screen pass.

Colorado finally scored with 6 minutes, 15 seconds left in the third quarter when a drive stalled after a holding penalty and Will Oliver kicked a 37-yard field goal. Oliver's kick broke the Buffs' scoreless streak of more than eight quarters at home. CU hadn't scored at Folsom Field since the second quarter of the Arizona State game on Oct. 11.

But the Buffs couldn't muster any more than that and like numerous previous opponents the Huskies poured it on late with two more touchdowns and a field goal.

Eleven down, one to go.

Coal company fires 150 after Obama re-election

    15 hrs.

At least one chief executive is making good on his pledge to cut jobs following President Barack Obama?s re-election this week.

Robert Murray, the chief executive of Ohio-based coal provider Murray Energy Corp., began laying off a small number of employees this week after Republican challenger Mitt Romney lost his bid for the White House.

The privately-held company, which had about 3,500 employees before the layoffs began, fired more than 150 employees at three locations this week. A spokesman, Gary Broadbent, said the layoffs were ongoing and these were just the latest announcements.

The layoff notices blamed Obama?s ?war on coal? for the job cuts.

There were about 80,000 people employed in coal mining in the U.S.?as of October, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That?s actually more than when the nation went into recession in December of 2007, but it?s fewer than a year ago.

In general, the economy has slowly been adding jobs, and the unemployment rate has been falling. But some industries have continued to shed jobs even as conditions have improved generally.

Murray outlined his plans to cut jobs following the election in a staff meeting with about 50 employees Wednesday.

The agenda for the meeting, along with the text of Murray?s ?prayer for America,? were provided to NBCNews.com by the company.

In the agenda, he predicted the total destruction of the coal industry by as early as 2030. He said conditions for his business would deteriorate because of more regulation and taxes, weaker economic activity and reduced energy pricing.

In the prayer, Murray wrote, in part:

?The American people have made their choice. They have decided that America must change its course, away from the principals of our Founders. And, away from the idea of individual freedom and individual responsibility. Away from capitalism, economic responsibility, and personal acceptance.?

He concluded by asking God for forgiveness for the layoff decisions.

?Lord, please forgive me and anyone with me in Murray Energy Corporation for the decisions that we are now forced to make to preserve the very existence of any of the enterprises that you have helped us build. We ask for your guidance in this drastic time with the drastic decisions that will be made to have any hope of our survival as an American business enterprise.?

About 100 of the layoffs are at UtahAmerican, the subsidiary? that operates the Crandall Canyon Mine. In 2007, a collapse at that mine killed nine people. Two months ago the company agreed to pay about $1 million in civil penalties as part of a settlement related to failures and violations that led to the collapse.

Broadbent, the Murray Energy spokesman, said in an e-mail that the layoffs announced this week are not related to the disaster and penalties.

?Those are separate issues,? he wrote.

Several companies made headlines before the presidential election Tuesday for insinuating that they would fire workers if Romney was not elected.

Silicon Valley, Singapore, Tel Aviv--the global hubs of entrepreneurial activity--all bear the marks of government investment. Yet, for every public intervention that spurs entrepreneurial activity, there are many failed efforts that waste untold billions in taxpayer dollars. When has governmental sponsorship succeeded in boosting growth, and when has it fallen terribly short? Should the government be involved in such undertakings at all? Boulevard of Broken Dreams is the first extensive look at the ways governments have supported entrepreneurs and venture capitalists across decades and continents. Josh Lerner, one of the foremost experts in the field, provides valuable insights into why some public initiatives work while others are hobbled by pitfalls, and he offers suggestions for how public ventures should be implemented in the future.

Discussing the complex history of Silicon Valley and other pioneering centers of venture capital, Lerner uncovers the extent of government influence in prompting growth. He examines the public strategies used to advance new ventures, points to the challenges of these endeavors, and reveals the common flaws undermining far too many programs--poor design, a lack of understanding for the entrepreneurial process, and implementation problems. Lerner explains why governments cannot dictate how venture markets evolve, and why they must balance their positions as catalysts with an awareness of their limited ability to stimulate the entrepreneurial sector.

As governments worldwide seek to spur economic growth in ever more aggressive ways, Boulevard of Broken Dreams offers an important caution. The book argues for a careful approach to government support of entrepreneurial activities, so that the mistakes of earlier efforts are not repeated.

Advantages Of Solar Water Heater - Work On the Internet

Solar energy is here for you to save electricity. Now you can use solar water heaters which give you numbers of benefits. Solar energy is the free and infinite source of energy which you can enjoy every day throughout your life. Your roof only needs to have solar panel which catches the solar energ and work well.

Solar water heaters save energy and you can reduce your hot water energy consumption by 50% to 90% depending upon Are you looking for some alternative of heating water to save electricity? No more searches now as your areas of living. It also reduces your heating cost which surely saves your dollars on electricity bill. As the electricity cost is increasing frequently so the solar water heaters are the great free and natural source of energy. It is also one of the pollution free methods of heating water.

There are other different advantages which a solar water heater user can benefit:
    No greenhouse effect
As we know that solar energy is produced by sun and it does not emit any greenhouse radiations. The process of solar water heating does not produce any smoke, gases and other chemical by product just like fossil fuels. This is first and foremost source of advantage of solar water heating process. You can take an example of Italy???s Montalto di Castro solar park. It is a good example of solar contribution to curbing emissions. It avoids 20,000 tonnes per year of carbon emissions compared to fossil fuel energy production.

    Infinite free energy
Another advantage of solar water heaters is that solar energy is free of cost. Other devices and systems need installation and maintenance but sun???s source of energy is 100% free. Solar energy doesn???t need any kind maintenance and other needy raw material like oil, coal and other fossil fuel and other labour.

    Decentralization of power
Solar energy plant is located in most sunny locations internationally. As you can see oil, coal, and gas used to produce conventional electricity which is often transported cross-country. Solar panels reduce this transportation cost, roadingwear, tear costs and other such expenses.

    Save eco-system
Solar water heaters indirectly save eco-system as solar energy don???t need to do destruction of forest which other fossil fuel like oil and coal need to do through mining. This is the biggest advantageous factor which saves environment.

These are few major advantages which you can avail from solar water heaters.

Team Europe-Styled HitFox Expands Its Games Marketing Startups ...

HitFox, the Team Europe co-founded and styled ?startup factory? focussed on founding and acquiring games distribution startups, is stepping on the gas by expanding into the Asia-Pacific region with a dedicated office in Seoul. The move is designed to help enlarge the footprint of HitFox?s current portfolio ? ad2games, AppLift and Game Finder ? which provide marketing and distribution solutions for mobile and online game publishers. These include the likes of Gameloft, TinyCo, and Kabam, along with Asia-Pacific game publishers such as Aeria Games, and Com2uS.

Additionally, Ludolf Ebner-Chung, who we?re told is a German-Korean by birth, has been recruited as HitFox?s General Manager in the region, and ? unsurprisingly ? he joins from another Team Europe venture, Yogiyo, the Korean subsidiary of take-out service, Delivery Hero. Prior to heading up Yogiyo, Ebner-Chung was a General Manager at Korean gaming company NCSoft, and also previously worked as a consultant for McKinsey & Co in Germany.

HitFox CEO, Jan Beckers, explained the reasoning behind opening a physical office in Asia, noting that it?s more than just biz dev and sales. ?Being present there will not only increase sales and visibility but also gives us an ear into the market. We will be able to work more closely with our partners and see trends earlier than competitors who are not present in these markets?, he says.

The company also plans to roll out localised versions of its B2C products, while also giving the Asian games publishers it already works with, a much quicker and more direct route into the U.S. and European markets.

?We are already working with a lot of Asian publishers, such as Com2uS to distribute their online and mobile games in Europe and the U.S.?, says Beckers. ?However a timelag of 9 hours and flight times of 15 hours between us and our partners slow things down. Having a local office and team in Asia will make our collaboration much easier.?

Berlin-based incubator, HitFox, was founded in 2011 by serial entrepreneurs Jan Beckers, Dr. Hanno Fichtner, Tim Koschella and Ruben Haas in ?co-operation? with Team Europe. In that sense, it?s sort of a ?startup factory? which is a product of a startup factory itself, German-syle, of course.

When I recently met Beckers for a coffee, it was self-evident that he himself cut his teeth at Team Europe, with his relentless focus on execution and non-apoligetic attitude to adopting the German incubator model, although it should be noted that his startup experience began at a much earlier age when he founded his first company while still a student. He also used to be editor of a well-known German startup blog, giving us a chance to swap blogger-to-entrepreneur war stories (he?s evidently come out the other side better off than I).

As noted when HitFox first announced it was morphing into an incubator, it boasts a team of 70 gaming, marketing and IT specialists ? hence my ?startup factory? description ? and aims to acquire or manufacture establish at least two businesses per year. From today, those businesses can really think global from the get-go.

?[In] 12-24 months from now we want to be able to support our mobile and online game publishers from local presences in all major gaming regions of the world?, says Beckers.

HitFox Game Ventures is a Game Distribution Incubator with 60 employees based in Berlin. The company was founded by Jan Beckers, Tim Koschella, Hanno Fichtner, Ruben Haas and Team Europe (www.teameurope.net). Investors include Holtzbrinck Ventures, Hasso Plattner Ventures, Tengelmann, Kite Ventures as well as Heiko Hubertz (CEO Bigpoint) and Dirk Freytag (former CEO Adtech). Since 2011 HitFox Game Ventures co-founded or acquired four start-ups - all within the field of game marketing and distribution. To company plans to co-found or...

How to Cut Back on Home Expenses ? Narrow Bridge Finance

    home repairs narrow bridge finance

Finance ?experts? often tell you to cut down on expenses at home, but they rarely have any useful advice on how to do it. Rather than give you the usual advice, today I am giving you specific steps you can follow to save money in the home for a long-term, big win.

    Utilities

Saving money on utilities is easier than you might think. While it is one of the few things we can?t live without, we can take active steps to reduce consumption to save money.

First, get a programmable thermostat. They don?t cost very much and can save a lot of money during the hottest and coolest months. Just set the temperature to go down when you are not home and when you are sleeping during the winter, and let it get a bit warmer during the day in the summer.

Next, you can improve your windows and insulation. 42% of energy costs go to heating and cooling, so keeping your warm and cool air where you want it can save a ton of money. For a cheaper, quick hit you can seal your windows and doors with caulk and weather stripping.?(Side note ? windows can also improve your resale value.)

To cut your water use, you can get a low flow toilet and put on a low flow shower head. Water efficient toilets can save 25% or more of your annual water consumption. A low flow shower head can cut your water use in the shower by 50-70%.

    Cable and Internet

You don?t need cable to live. I know it is hard for some people to believe, but, unlike food and water and shelter, you can do just fine without cable or satellite TV. I cut my cord and saved $70 per month and now I don?t ever have to deal with Comcast ever again!

For internet, shop around for the best deals. I get DSL at home from CenturyLink that costs about $40 per month. It is plenty fast for online gaming and streaming up to two Netflix movies at a time.

    Repairs

If something breaks at home, you might be able to do it yourself. I am not what I would call an overly handy guy, but I have installed and removed toilets, changed locks, repaired cabinets, and done a handful of other tasks around the house with no problems.

For the big problems that I can?t handle on my own, I still call a professional, but I call one that has a good reputation (Yelp) and shop around for the best prices.

    Appliances

When it is time to buy your next appliances to use around the house, get high quality, energy efficient appliances. Cheap appliances don?t last as long (or do as good of a job). Investing in quality means you will have a better result that lasts a long time. I am a fan of Consumer?s Reports for shopping around for appliances.

I already mentioned energy in the heating and cooling section above, but appliances are also huge energy users. Refrigerators run 24 hours a day. Washers and dryers have huge energy needs. Finding low energy rated appliances can save you a lot of money in the long haul.

    What Have You Done?

What have you done to save money around the house? Please share your best successes in the comments.

France will stand against instability in Lebanon

BEIRUT (AP) ? France's president pledged Sunday that his country will stand against instability in Lebanon, two weeks after the assassination of a senior Lebanese intelligence official sparked clashes between pro- and anti-Syrian groups.

Francois Hollande also promised that Paris and the European Union will help Lebanon deal with an influx of more than 100,000 refugees who have fled the civil war in neighboring Syria.

"We are committed to give you guarantees regarding security, stability and unity of Lebanon," Hollande told reporters after meeting President Michel Suleiman.

The Oct. 19 car bomb that killed Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, a powerful anti-Syrian intelligence official, stirred up deadly sectarian tensions in Lebanon, where Sunnis and Shiites are deeply divided over the civil war in Syria, which has killed at least 36,000 people since it began in March 2011.

Lebanon's two largest political coalitions have lined up on opposite sides of the conflict. The powerful Shiite group Hezbollah and its partners who dominate the Lebanese government have stood by Syrian President Bashar Assad, while Lebanon's Sunni-led opposition backs the rebels seeking to topple the Damascus regime.

Assad and many in his inner circle are Alawites ? an offshoot of Shiite Islam and a minority in Syria ? while the rebels come mostly from the country's Sunni majority.

Syria dominated Lebanon for 29 years after it first sent troops into its smaller neighbor in 1976, during Lebanon's 15-year civil war.

Damascus' three-decade hold on Lebanon began to slip in 2005, after the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Still, for years after Syrian troops pulled out, there were frequent assassinations of anti-Syrian figures in Lebanon, and the perpetrators have yet to be tracked down.

Despite the Syrian military's withdrawal from Lebanon, Assad has managed to maintain his influence in the country through allies, such as Hezbollah.

Hollande made a three-hour stop in Beirut en route to Saudi Arabia for talks with senior officials there that are expected to focus on the Syria conflict and Iran's disputed nuclear program.

Saudi officials said Hollande arrived in the Red Sea port of Jiddah, accompanied by a high-level delegation that included French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and a senior trade official.

France's ambassador to Saudi Arabia said in comments published in the Al-Riyadh newspaper that Paris and Riyadh share views on both issues. The newspaper quoted Bertrand Besancenot as saying France backs tighter sanctions on Iran and calls on Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down.

Saudi Arabia is Iran's main regional rival and is a key backer of Syria's rebels.

While in Beirut, Hollande said France will give "full assistance" in the investigation of al-Hassan's assassination, saying "the Lebanese and the world want this. There will be no escape from justice."

Al-Hassan was killed a day after he returned home from Paris, where his family has been living for years.

"Even though Lebanon is very close, it should not be the victim of this crisis," Hollande said referring to Syria's civil war. "We renew France's full support to the stability, unity, independence and safety of the territory of Lebanon."

France, the onetime colonial ruler of both Syria and Lebanon, has been one of the most outspoken Western critics of the Assad regime. France announced in September that it had begun sending direct aid and money to five rebel-held Syrian cities as part of its intensified efforts to weaken Assad. It was the first such move by a Western power amid mounting calls for the international community to do more to prevent bloodshed.

French officials have acknowledged providing communications and other non-lethal equipment to Syrian rebel forces, but say they won't provide weapons without international agreement. Paris played a leading role in the international campaign against Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi last year.

France still wields wide influence in Lebanon and has about 900 peacekeepers deployed near the border with Israel.

Low vitamin D levels linked to longevity, surprising study shows

ScienceDaily (Nov. 5, 2012) ? Low levels of vitamin D may be associated with longevity, according to a study involving middle-aged children of people in their 90s published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).

"We found that familial longevity was associated with lower levels of vitamin D and a lower frequency of allelic variation in the CYP2R1 gene, which was associated with higher levels of vitamin D," writes Dr. Diana van Heemst, Department of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, the Netherlands, with coauthors.

Previous studies have shown that low levels of vitamin D are associated with increased rates of death, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, allergies, mental illness and other afflictions. However, it is not known whether low levels are the cause of these diseases or if they are a consequence.

To determine whether there was an association between vitamin D levels and longevity, Dutch researchers looked at data from 380 white families with at least 2 siblings over age 90 (89 years or older for men and 91 year or older for women) in the Leiden Longevity Study. The study involved the siblings, their offspring and their offsprings' partners for a total of 1038 offspring and 461 controls. The children of the nonagenarians were included because it is difficult to include controls for the older age group. The partners were included because they were of a similar age and shared similar environmental factors that might influence vitamin D levels.

The researchers measured levels of 25(OH) vitamin D and categorized levels by month as they varied according to season. Tanning bed use, which can affect vitamin D levels, was categorized as never, 1 times per year and 6 times per year. The researchers controlled for age, sex, BMI (body mass index), time of year, vitamin supplementation and kidney function, all factors that can influence vitamin D levels. They also looked at the influence of genetic variation in 3 genes associated with vitamin D levels.

"We found that the offspring of nonagenarians who had at least 1 nonagenarian sibling had lower levels of vitamin D than controls, independent of possible confounding factors and SNPs [single nucleotide polymorphisms] associated with vitamin D levels," write the authors. "We also found that the offspring had a lower frequency of common genetic variants in the CYP2R1 gene; a common genetic variant of this gene predisposes people to high vitamin D levels.

These findings support an association between low vitamin D levels and familial longevity." They postulate that offspring of nonagenarians might have more of a protein that is hypothesized to be an "aging suppressor" protein. More research is needed to understand the link between lower vitamin D levels, genetic variants and familial longevity.

SAN JACINTO: Last day for Soboba Sand Drags racing season - blog

    Posted on | November 4, 2012 | Comments

It?s the last day of Southern California Sand Drag Association?s season at Soboba Casino/Motor Complex on the Soboba Indian Reservation.

The Southern California Sand Drag Association racing season ends Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Soboba Casino/Motor Complex on the Soboba Reservation. This drag quad was in the pro motorcycle race in May at the track. INNER PEACE PHOTOGRAPHY/CONTRIBUTED IMAGE

If you?re looking for a change of pace, it might be a fun outing. Competition begins with the youth division at 9 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 4, and the finals for the last class are at 6:15 p.m. Here is a preview with details. This is the fourth event of the year and temperatures are forecast at about 90 degrees, so it should be comfortable at the track in the shade they set up. Don?t forget to bring ear protection and wear sunscreen.

In this motor sport, blink and it?s over. The track is 300 feet long, the length of football field, and each race lasts mere seconds. Here?s an interesting interview about the races by Nick Reed (My Valley Online) with Steve DeNunzio, president of the association.

if you?re a sand drag fan, the National Sand Drag News is covering the event live, tweeting results (you need to know the sport to interpret the limitations of 160-character Twitter) and posting some videos.

Here?s one that features the Top Eliminator class from Saturday, Nov. 3, and there are other videos on the site. (Hint: Give the video time to load, might be slow.)

It?s the kind of attention San Jacinto civic leaders wished for when the City Council voted to give a $5,000 sponsorship to the association for the 2012 season. The aim is to give the city exposure and attract tourists, who might spend money in town and consider relocating a business or moving their families here.

If you are curious about this sport but don?t have time on a Sunday, mark your calendar for March 2-3, 2013, the tentative dates for the opening of the association?s next season at Soboba. Fom the Southern California Sand Drag Association site, here?s my favorite glossary of terms so you know what they?re talking about.

Here?s more about the racing in photos. The first link is to photographer Sarah DeNunzio, daughter-in-law of the association president.

I also found that off-road motor sports photographer Neal Rideout was out at the track in September.

If you want to see postings of fans and racers from this weekend, go to the association?s Facebook page.
