France will stand against instability in Lebanon

BEIRUT (AP) ? France's president pledged Sunday that his country will stand against instability in Lebanon, two weeks after the assassination of a senior Lebanese intelligence official sparked clashes between pro- and anti-Syrian groups.

Francois Hollande also promised that Paris and the European Union will help Lebanon deal with an influx of more than 100,000 refugees who have fled the civil war in neighboring Syria.

"We are committed to give you guarantees regarding security, stability and unity of Lebanon," Hollande told reporters after meeting President Michel Suleiman.

The Oct. 19 car bomb that killed Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, a powerful anti-Syrian intelligence official, stirred up deadly sectarian tensions in Lebanon, where Sunnis and Shiites are deeply divided over the civil war in Syria, which has killed at least 36,000 people since it began in March 2011.

Lebanon's two largest political coalitions have lined up on opposite sides of the conflict. The powerful Shiite group Hezbollah and its partners who dominate the Lebanese government have stood by Syrian President Bashar Assad, while Lebanon's Sunni-led opposition backs the rebels seeking to topple the Damascus regime.

Assad and many in his inner circle are Alawites ? an offshoot of Shiite Islam and a minority in Syria ? while the rebels come mostly from the country's Sunni majority.

Syria dominated Lebanon for 29 years after it first sent troops into its smaller neighbor in 1976, during Lebanon's 15-year civil war.

Damascus' three-decade hold on Lebanon began to slip in 2005, after the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Still, for years after Syrian troops pulled out, there were frequent assassinations of anti-Syrian figures in Lebanon, and the perpetrators have yet to be tracked down.

Despite the Syrian military's withdrawal from Lebanon, Assad has managed to maintain his influence in the country through allies, such as Hezbollah.

Hollande made a three-hour stop in Beirut en route to Saudi Arabia for talks with senior officials there that are expected to focus on the Syria conflict and Iran's disputed nuclear program.

Saudi officials said Hollande arrived in the Red Sea port of Jiddah, accompanied by a high-level delegation that included French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and a senior trade official.

France's ambassador to Saudi Arabia said in comments published in the Al-Riyadh newspaper that Paris and Riyadh share views on both issues. The newspaper quoted Bertrand Besancenot as saying France backs tighter sanctions on Iran and calls on Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down.

Saudi Arabia is Iran's main regional rival and is a key backer of Syria's rebels.

While in Beirut, Hollande said France will give "full assistance" in the investigation of al-Hassan's assassination, saying "the Lebanese and the world want this. There will be no escape from justice."

Al-Hassan was killed a day after he returned home from Paris, where his family has been living for years.

"Even though Lebanon is very close, it should not be the victim of this crisis," Hollande said referring to Syria's civil war. "We renew France's full support to the stability, unity, independence and safety of the territory of Lebanon."

France, the onetime colonial ruler of both Syria and Lebanon, has been one of the most outspoken Western critics of the Assad regime. France announced in September that it had begun sending direct aid and money to five rebel-held Syrian cities as part of its intensified efforts to weaken Assad. It was the first such move by a Western power amid mounting calls for the international community to do more to prevent bloodshed.

French officials have acknowledged providing communications and other non-lethal equipment to Syrian rebel forces, but say they won't provide weapons without international agreement. Paris played a leading role in the international campaign against Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi last year.

France still wields wide influence in Lebanon and has about 900 peacekeepers deployed near the border with Israel.

Low vitamin D levels linked to longevity, surprising study shows

ScienceDaily (Nov. 5, 2012) ? Low levels of vitamin D may be associated with longevity, according to a study involving middle-aged children of people in their 90s published in CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal).

"We found that familial longevity was associated with lower levels of vitamin D and a lower frequency of allelic variation in the CYP2R1 gene, which was associated with higher levels of vitamin D," writes Dr. Diana van Heemst, Department of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Leiden University Medical Center, Leiden, the Netherlands, with coauthors.

Previous studies have shown that low levels of vitamin D are associated with increased rates of death, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, allergies, mental illness and other afflictions. However, it is not known whether low levels are the cause of these diseases or if they are a consequence.

To determine whether there was an association between vitamin D levels and longevity, Dutch researchers looked at data from 380 white families with at least 2 siblings over age 90 (89 years or older for men and 91 year or older for women) in the Leiden Longevity Study. The study involved the siblings, their offspring and their offsprings' partners for a total of 1038 offspring and 461 controls. The children of the nonagenarians were included because it is difficult to include controls for the older age group. The partners were included because they were of a similar age and shared similar environmental factors that might influence vitamin D levels.

The researchers measured levels of 25(OH) vitamin D and categorized levels by month as they varied according to season. Tanning bed use, which can affect vitamin D levels, was categorized as never, 1 times per year and 6 times per year. The researchers controlled for age, sex, BMI (body mass index), time of year, vitamin supplementation and kidney function, all factors that can influence vitamin D levels. They also looked at the influence of genetic variation in 3 genes associated with vitamin D levels.

"We found that the offspring of nonagenarians who had at least 1 nonagenarian sibling had lower levels of vitamin D than controls, independent of possible confounding factors and SNPs [single nucleotide polymorphisms] associated with vitamin D levels," write the authors. "We also found that the offspring had a lower frequency of common genetic variants in the CYP2R1 gene; a common genetic variant of this gene predisposes people to high vitamin D levels.

These findings support an association between low vitamin D levels and familial longevity." They postulate that offspring of nonagenarians might have more of a protein that is hypothesized to be an "aging suppressor" protein. More research is needed to understand the link between lower vitamin D levels, genetic variants and familial longevity.

SAN JACINTO: Last day for Soboba Sand Drags racing season - blog

Posted on | November 4, 2012 | Comments

It?s the last day of Southern California Sand Drag Association?s season at Soboba Casino/Motor Complex on the Soboba Indian Reservation.

The Southern California Sand Drag Association racing season ends Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Soboba Casino/Motor Complex on the Soboba Reservation. This drag quad was in the pro motorcycle race in May at the track. INNER PEACE PHOTOGRAPHY/CONTRIBUTED IMAGE

If you?re looking for a change of pace, it might be a fun outing. Competition begins with the youth division at 9 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 4, and the finals for the last class are at 6:15 p.m. Here is a preview with details. This is the fourth event of the year and temperatures are forecast at about 90 degrees, so it should be comfortable at the track in the shade they set up. Don?t forget to bring ear protection and wear sunscreen.

In this motor sport, blink and it?s over. The track is 300 feet long, the length of football field, and each race lasts mere seconds. Here?s an interesting interview about the races by Nick Reed (My Valley Online) with Steve DeNunzio, president of the association.

if you?re a sand drag fan, the National Sand Drag News is covering the event live, tweeting results (you need to know the sport to interpret the limitations of 160-character Twitter) and posting some videos.

Here?s one that features the Top Eliminator class from Saturday, Nov. 3, and there are other videos on the site. (Hint: Give the video time to load, might be slow.)

It?s the kind of attention San Jacinto civic leaders wished for when the City Council voted to give a $5,000 sponsorship to the association for the 2012 season. The aim is to give the city exposure and attract tourists, who might spend money in town and consider relocating a business or moving their families here.

If you are curious about this sport but don?t have time on a Sunday, mark your calendar for March 2-3, 2013, the tentative dates for the opening of the association?s next season at Soboba. Fom the Southern California Sand Drag Association site, here?s my favorite glossary of terms so you know what they?re talking about.

Here?s more about the racing in photos. The first link is to photographer Sarah DeNunzio, daughter-in-law of the association president.

I also found that off-road motor sports photographer Neal Rideout was out at the track in September.

If you want to see postings of fans and racers from this weekend, go to the association?s Facebook page.

Building a strong dental team | Dental Practice & Business ...

Right Hiring and Retention Manual for the Dental Team,We come in all shapes, sizes, and personalities. We also come with different sets of values, beliefs, preferences, interests, and abilities. If we are to work effectively with each other, we need to spend time learning more about each other. Pay attention to differences in personalities and work styles. Develop skill-sets that invite collaboration and teamwork rather than insisting that all ?march to the same drum.? By honoring the differences, we build bridges to better understanding.

Everyone likes to be acknowledged and appreciated. Each team member has the potential to contribute to the practice in unique and profitable ways. When they do, devise a system that allows you to reward them the way that best fits them. Some may enjoy the ?limelight? while others want to go to a movie or a quiet dinner with a special person. Find out how each person will feel most appreciated and if possible take steps to incorporate that in an overall recognition plan.

Friends of The Animals: The Spy Who Loves Me | - AVA Pet Central

You?ve read about pet cats, dogs and rodents. In this week?s ?Friends of the Animals?, we have Spy, a little birdy belonging to Lye Fong Keng from the Wildlife Section, telling us more about life as a pet bird.?(We hear it involves throwing bottle-caps and landing on people?s heads!)

Hi guys, my name is Spy and I?m a peach-faced lovebird,?Agapornis roseicollis, a non-CITES species (owner?s occupational hazard!). My owner has previously kept a hamster, cherry shrimps and fishies like guppies, fighting?fishies, angel?fishies?and parrot fishies but never a parrot, so she decided to keep a small parrot?for a change.

Ain't I cute?

My wild ancestors lived in Africa but I was born to a parrot breeder in Singapore. At 2 months old after I was weaned, my owner brought me home.?The?day was 10 December 2011.

I was to be named Kiwi, for being green and golden (orange) color. But I like to snoop around the house and check out on what the human folks do, so I have been named Spy instead (although lately, my owner has been calling me naughty naughty more).

What do you do with a naughty escape artiste?!

I am a small birdie with a big personality (and an attitude). I am curious, intelligent, friendly and playful. I need lots of birdie toys (new ones please!) to keep me busy every day. My daily diet consists of a mix of seeds, millets and pellets, fresh clean water supplemented with multi-vitamins and baby carrots. I also like to eat bananas and berries and occasionally, I would steal bread from my owner?s breakfast! Sometimes, I can be a little fussy and not accept any new type of food.

My wet look after a bath!

To keep my feathers in good condition, I would bathe in the bath dish once a week. If I am in a bad mood and refuse to bathe, my owner would mist me instead. After my bath, I would perch on the couch and ruffle my feathers to shake off the excess water (oh, I do this on my owner?s shoulders too!). This would be followed by a little sunning to dry my feathers. Meanwhile, the mess in my cage would be cleaned up and it would be nice and comfortable for my afternoon nap!

Every day, I look forward to seeing my owner come home as I will be out of the cage to catch my evening flights. This exercise helps to strengthen my wings and I can land on my owner?s head like a helicopter (naughty naughty?!)! It is mighty tough to catch me but my owner always has a way to trick me back into the cage. She thinks I am?a screaming monster whenever I make loud shrieking calls to get attention. Now, my owner is teaching me to whistle softly so that I am more disciplined with my manners! Though I am not a talking parrot like my cousins, I can squawk and vocalise strange sounds like squeaking, clicking and giggling!

Showing off my collection of bottle-caps!

I enjoy learning new tricks and playing with my toys such as the swing, bell, chewing wooden blocks, watching ?the other birdie? in the mirror, shredding paper and nipping drinking straws. Now I also have a collection of colourful recycled bottle-caps with which I would flip around or throw and roll on the floor. I would bob my head up and down in excitement when the bottle-caps hit some ?targets?! It is equally entertaining to see my owner picking them up one by one! I enjoy watching Youtube clips of my own species on the iPad. Sometimes, I also explore my owner?s iPhone and don?t tell anyone I chewed on the casing so hard that it has cracked!

My dream is to be featured on Animal?Planet some day so that more people can learn about my species and my cousin parrots. I wish that all the folks out there who keep pets would be responsible and shower us with Tender Loving Care!

Me with Big Bird and Birdy (I don't mix with the Angry Birds!)
