In such situation the dollar was weakening against the euro and the pound but strengthening against the yen. Thus, such tendency remained only against the dollar and the yen, and the situation with the unified currency changed and the EUR/USD pair closed the session at the same prices as at the beginning of trading session. It is obvious that the Ministers of Finance of the Eurozone don?t guarantee to Greece the allocation of the next aid tranche in the nearest future, and also weak statistics of the European economy caused a weakening of the unified currency. Concerning the U.S. economic indexes, there were no changes in the market events ? business activity statistics in Chicago improved, but the results turned out to be worsen then in forecasts. In October supply mangers index (PMI) in Chicago was 49.9 against 49,7 in September, but it was estimated the increase to 51,0, rise in the positive direction, over 50,0. Today there will be more important news about the economy, first of all it is the topic of employment, which becomes more important on the threshold of an appearance of the employment statistics ? ADP report about working places in the private sector for October is estimated to increase by 139 thousands after +162 thousands, but the number of initial unemployment allowance appeals didn?t changed, 369 thousands. Attention will be attracted by the information from the Institute of Supply Management about the dynamics of supply managers index (PMI) for industrial sphere, which is expected to decrease by 51.2 in October after 51.5 earlier. Conference board reports about the consumers mood will be also published ? consumer confidence index may increase with confidence by? 73.0 in October against 70.3 in the previous month. Concerning the perspectives, as I?ve already told, the American trading session may be influenced by the results of employments statistics. Results better then in forecasts, which show the signs of labour market recovery may support the dollar.

EUR

The unified European currency strengthened against the dollar at the beginning of trading session on Wednesday in the situation of the increase of the European stock exchange indexes and the decrease of Italian and Spain bonds capacity. Expectations of the positive opening of a stock exchange trading in the USA also contributed to a good mood. However, discrepant results of the Eurozone economy and political situation changed the investors? mood, and the euro turned out to be at the same position against the dollar. Uncertainty in the negotiations between the EU tree and Greece, and in this connection, the European group announcement about the absence of guarantee on the financial aid to Greece became the main reasons of decrease of interest in the unified currency. Disputes about the budget in Greece parliament, where Greece coalition can?t manage to come to Congress caused particular anxiety about a negative solution of the problem in the markets. Concerning the statistics, strong results of retail trade in Germany contributed to the mood improvement at the market ? the results of September showed increase by 1.5% m/m, when the forecast had estimated only +0.4% m/m.? However, the labour market statistics in the European Block brought disappointment and pressed the euro ? the unemployment rate increased by 11.6% in September from 11.5%, when the forecasts hadn?t expected changes. At the same time, Italy also demonstrated the worsening of labour market statistics after France and Germany. And In? Greece and Spain the unemployment rate exceeded 25%. The estimate of consumer prices index (CPI) of the Eurozone in October didn?t fixed changes, it remained at the level 2.5% y/y. Today we don?t expect important statistics of the EU, political situation will be of great interest. It will be marked by the further negotiations between Greece and the EU-tree ?about the financial aid to Greece. In general, the key topic will be about Greece in the end of this week and at the beginning of the next one as it is more likely that on Monday the voting in the Parliament will take place and the question will be solved ? whether Athens is ready to take the reforms, which international creditors demand.

British pound was the leader at the last trading session and strengthened against its all main opponents. It is obvious that it can be explained by that fact that in such uncertain situation the British pound became the most secure and interesting asset for investment. It can be confirmed by the fact that the news from ?islands? didn?t dispose towards the improvement of British pound popularity ? consumer confidence index in the Great Britain decreased by 30 after 28 according to the investigations of Gfk, and the member of monetary policy of the Bank of England Ch. Bin announced about the necessity to continue buying of state bonds and other assets until the inflation rate approached to 2.0%. It increased the probability of making a decision about the widening of mitigation program by the British governor. Today?s news also don?t contribute to a good mood concerning the pound ? supply managers index (PMI) for the production sphere for October is expected to decrease more, to 48.1from 48.4 earlier. It justified a weak beginning og the 4^th quarter and probable negative economic result according to the results of the last quarter of the year. Moreover, according to the forecasts, the construction sector and service sphere index PMI may also decrease. Taking into account this situation, there is much risk to see changes of the pound, as the position of British currency is not stable enough to resist any additions, which contribute to the risk-off and the pound can turn out to be under pressure in the nearest future.

Japanese yen was continuing to weaken against the dollar at the trading session on Wednesday. Splash of optimism supported the pressure on the yen. Moreover disappointment concerning the decisions of the Bank of Japanese had dispersed and the EUR/USD pair returned to the position, at which the yen began weakening when this information appeared. Among the news about the Land of the Rising Sun we can underline the regional economic report? for the 3^rd quarter, which showed the decrease of economy in 8 regions out of 11. Today there will be no important economic statistics of Japan. The U.S. economic statistics and a publication of the U.S. labour market statistics, planned for tomorrow, may influence the Japanese currency.

The Reference Frame: Edward Teller's great H-day: 60 years ago

Ivy Mike released 188 times more energy than Hurricane Sandy

Hungarian-Jewish-American physicist Edward Teller had a great day exactly 60 years ago, on November 1st, 1952. For some years, he's been working on an idea originally due to the great physics guru Enrico Fermi (most likely, and one invented in Summer 1942) which totally fascinated him: a bomb getting its energy from thermonuclear fusion.

While fission only releases about \(0.001E=0.001mc^2\) from some mass, fusion is able to get to \(0.01E=0.01mc^2\), one percent of the total latent energy, and it may employ as omnipresent "fuels" as hydrogen.

Ivy Mike, the pioneering device based on the Teller-Ulam design, was finally ready for detonation on the Enewetak Atoll (atoll = coral island encircling a lagoon) in the Pacific Ocean: Google Maps, crater (yes, the Elugelab [codenamed Flora] island in the the atoll ceased to exist and was filled with water; before, after, source).

This device was one of the main reasons we have had peace for many and many decades; Edward Teller should have clearly gotten the Peace Nobel Prize that was jokingly given to the "European Union". How strong was the explosion? And how did the device work?

At the center of the device, there was a cylindrical rod of plutonium, the "sparkplug", that had the task to ignite the fusion reaction. It was surrounded by a natural five-ton uranium "tamper". The external side of the tamper was made of a mixture of lead and polyethylene and these sheets were sending X-rays from the primary to the secondary. The X-rays acted by their huge pressure and temperature.

All the lead, plutonium, and uranium stuff was there just to help the primary actor that was being tested ? the cryogenic (=impractical for mobile bombs) liquid deuterium fuel at the very center (plus some tritium) ? to get a bit excited and warmed up.

The whole active object, also named "sausage", was encapsulated in 25-30 centimeter thick steel. This whole toy was 54 tons heavy, 619 cm tall, and 203 cm in diameter. With other external components, Ivy Mike weighed over 80 tons (again, that's why it was impractical for mobile weapons). When it exploded, it produced 10-12 megatons of TNT but 77% came from the fission of the uranium "temper" (about 450 kg out of 4.5 tons of the uranium was "burned" releasing the equivalent of almost 8 megatons of TNT) but the remaining 23% may be attributed to fusion. The fireball was 5 km wide and the mushroom went to 17 km altitude in 90 seconds and 30 km in 150 seconds.

Note that 10 megatons of TNT is about 41.84 petajoules i.e. \(41.84\times 10^{15}\,{\rm J}\). Via \(E=mc^2\), that's equivalent to the complete destruction of 0.47 kilograms of matter. Take one-quarter of it (for fusion) and multiply it by 100 to see that about a kilogram of hydrogen was turned mostly into helium or new tritium (and other things).

Alexander A? told us about the energy stored in the otherwise mediocre Hurricane Sandy. His source states that Sandy "contained" ? whatever it exactly meant ? 0.222 petajoules of energy. It's only larger than the analogous numbers for other, stronger storms because Sandy's figure includes the wind energy from a larger area. If you know how to divide numbers, you can easily calculate that Ivy Mike released the same energy as 188 times the Hurricane Sandy. And it was pretty much produced by one right-wing physicist. That's a simple quantitative explanation why you shouldn't expect right-wing physicists to be overly impressed by the energy of the Hurricane Sandy. ;-)

But if the worshipers of the greenhouse effect and its hypothetical but indefensible effects on the weather events feel humiliated, and they surely should because they are, let me calm them down just a little bit. The research project initiated in 1951 that led to Ivy Mike had a nice name: the Greenhouse. :-D

(Yes, I needed Ivy Mike whose energy was equivalent to 750 Hiroshimas. Hiroshima wasn't enough to beat Sandy; it released about 1/4 of Sandy's energy. On the other hand, NYC rats are stronger than Sandy.)

The crater created by the blast was 3 km wide and 60 meters deep. 80 million tons of rocks were vaporized. The blast didn't proceed as expected ? it was two times better i.e. stronger. One pilot who was supposed to pick some air samples died when he ran out of fuel. All elements including Einsteinium and Fermium were produced. A 50-kilometer vicinity of the atoll was substantially radioactively contaminated. You don't want to play with similar toys in the New York City; Sandy is just fine.

Harry Truman who politically supervised the research wasn't the only one. At that time, the Soviets were already working on something similar although their research was arguably not quite independent. Sakharov's Third Idea ? the Slavic term for the Teller-Ulam design ? got tested in 1955, three years after Ivy Mike (6 times lower yield than Ivy Mike). But already in 1953, one year after Ivy Mike, the USSR tested Joe 4 (0.4 megatons of TNT, 25 times smaller than Ivy Mike) based on a different "Sloika" philosophy. The strongest (thermonuclear or otherwise) man-made explosion ever (so far?) was the Tsar Bomba in 1961. At 57 megatons of TNT, it was 5 times stronger than Ivy Mike and 1,000 times stronger than Hurricane Sandy. Take it, Yankees and weather alarmists. ;-)

P.S.: Just a comment on the energy vs world energy consumption. The Ivy Mike blast may look very large and you could think that it would be great to use it as a generator of energy. But I mentioned that the blast released \(4\times 10^{16}\) joules of energy. It's a lot but the world's annual energy consumption is around \(4\times 10^{20}\) joules so you would have to tame 10,000 Ivy-Mike-like blasts a year to replace the existing sources of energy! But you could imagine it's doable. Forget about peaceful thermonuclear power plants and use a blast to raise a lot of matter to some altitude, or heat it, or something like that. 30 such Ivy Mike blasts a day may produce the electricity for the whole mankind. ;-)

Mumps outbreak traced to face-to-face schooling: study

(Reuters) - A face-to-face educational method used among Orthodox Jews apparently led to a U.S. outbreak of mumps in 2009 and 2010 even though most of those infected had been properly vaccinated, according to a U.S. study.

The outbreak, detailed in the New England Journal of Medicine, indicates how close, repeated contact with an infected person can overwhelm the mumps vaccine, the researchers said.

"The risk of infection with mumps may be higher when the exposure dose of virus is large or intensely transmitted," wrote lead author Albert Barskey, of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for Immunization and Respirators Diseases, and colleagues.

This may also explain why the mumps vaccine tends to be less effective among household contacts than among school or community contacts, they added.

In the mumps outbreak, 3,502 cases were reported over a one-year period beginning in June 2009 in New Jersey, New York City and New York State's Orange and Rockland counties. A camp in the Catskill Mountains was the source.

The researchers, from the involved state health departments and the CDC, studied 1,648 of those cases, nearly all of them Orthodox Jews. The researchers found that 89 percent had received the recommended two doses of mumps vaccine.

Many attended a religious school known as a yeshiva, where boys receive intense training with a study partner known as a chavrusa, who sits across a narrow table. The teaching method often involves animated discussions and the partners are switched several times a day.

The researchers wrote that "chavrusa study, with its prolonged, face-to-face contact," probably resulted in high exposures to the virus, and these "overcame vaccine-induced protection in individual students."

The large families in Orthodox Jewish communities also contributed to the spread, Barskey told Reuters Health in a telephone interview.

"As the outbreak went on, we started to see younger and older cases, and females as well. What that suggests is there was spread in the households. From family it would jump to a new school," he said.

"The chavrusas played the biggest role. The households played a lesser role."

The source of the outbreak was eventually traced to an 11-year-old boy, who had himself received two vaccine doses but nonetheless picked up the disease in the United Kingdom, where fears about vaccination had led to a large mumps outbreak.

Spooky name surrounds former Chesterfield town - NBC12.com ...

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

If you're looking for an eerie sounding location to check out on Halloween you may not have to travel very far at all. In fact, a social media application lists an ?area in Chesterfield County as the vanishing town of Screamersville.

"When I send recent text messages or check-in, like you can on Facebook, the destination that you send from always says Screamersville and I always wondered why," said Mark Umphry.

He lives in Enon, right next to one of the historic graveyards.

"It's kind of in a creepy spot. It's been there for years," he said.

Turns out, tombstones identify freed slaves from the post Civil War era who settled in the town. The area is located along Route 10 near I-295.

Diana Dallmeyer with the Chesterfield Historical Society explains how Screamersville got its name.

"These were people who lived hard lives. They were extremely poor. They learned how to party and make the best of the circumstances that they had, so a lot of screaming and revelry going on. That's one theory," Dallmeyer said.

She says there are several theories behind the name.

"The lack of modern conveniences like telephones, other ways of communication. People just hollered from porch to porch greeting their neighbors and communicating," she suggested.

Today the former community is replaced with modern houses and condos but the few graveyards that remain shed light into another theory.

"One theory is that these are the residents of the cemetery expressing themselves," Dallmeyer said.

Whatever the case, it is perhaps the only preservation of a town with a spooky name that used to be.

"The most we can do is try to record these fascinating nuggets of our county's history," she said.

"I never hear any screams though," Umphry said with a laugh.

Screamersville, Virginia also has a Facebook page where many have checked-in and are talking about on their personal pages.
